Chapter 15: The Truth My Mother Left Behind

I stared at the message.

My father saw my face.

“What happened?””

I didn’t answer.

I handed him the phone.

He read it.

His expression immediately changed.

“No.””

My grandmother looked worried.

“What?””

Marcus looked at me.

“You’re not meeting anyone alone.””

“I wasn’t going to.””

But the truth was…

I wanted answers.

I wanted them more than anything.

Because for days, everyone had been talking about me.

My future.

My choices.

My life.

But nobody had asked me what I wanted.

Marcus sat beside me.

“Maya.””

I looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

The words surprised me.

“Why?””

“Because I should have told you more.””

I looked down.

“I just wanted to be normal.””

His face softened.

“I know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t.””

A tear fell.

“I thought Vanessa hated me.””

The room went quiet.

Marcus looked toward her.

Vanessa looked away.

“I thought I had to prove I deserved to be here.””

My father’s eyes filled.

“Maya…”

“I thought if I was easier, quieter, better…”

My voice cracked.

“Maybe people wouldn’t try to replace me.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa started crying.

Not dramatically.

Quietly.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

For the first time, she didn’t have an excuse.

No explanation.

No defense.

Just regret.

“I hurt you,” she whispered.

I didn’t answer.

Because I wasn’t ready to forgive her.

But I heard her.

And maybe that mattered.

Marcus stood.

“We need to find Rachel.””

My grandmother nodded.

“I know where she might be.””

Everyone looked at her.

“She left a note years ago.””

“What note?””

My grandmother looked toward the hallway.

“In case Maya ever needed the truth.””

She walked to her purse.

And pulled out an envelope.

My name was written on it.

My hands froze.

“That’s mine?””

My grandmother nodded.

“Your mother wrote it.””

I touched the envelope.

The handwriting was familiar.

From birthday cards.

From old letters.

From the few memories I still had.

Marcus looked at me.

“You don’t have to open it now.””

I held it tightly.

“Yes, I do.””

The room went silent.

I opened it.

Inside was one page.

One message.

My mother’s words.

I read the first line.

*My beautiful Maya, if you are reading this, it means someone tried to make decisions about your life without asking you.*

My breath caught.

The next line made my hands shake.

*Never let anyone convince you that being loved means you have to disappear.*

I looked up.

Everyone was silent.

My mother knew.

Somehow, she knew.

I continued reading.

*There is something protected for you, but the most important thing I leave you is not money. It is the truth.*

My eyes moved lower.

Then I saw the final sentence.

And everything changed.

*The person who tried to take what belongs to you is not a stranger.*

I stopped.

My father noticed.

“What does it say?””

I looked at him.

I couldn’t speak.

Because below that sentence was a name.

A name I never expected.

A name that explained everything.

I slowly turned the paper around.

Marcus read it.

His face went completely still.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

My grandmother started crying.

Brielle whispered:

“No…”

My father looked at me.

Then at the letter.

Then at the name.

And quietly said:

“Rachel.””

The room fell silent.

My mother’s letter had revealed the person behind everything.

But underneath Rachel’s name was one final sentence.

One warning.

*Maya, if Rachel ever comes back, do not trust what she tells you first.*

And then, before anyone could say another word…

The doorbell rang.

Everyone froze.

Marcus looked toward the door.

May you like

Because standing outside…

Was the woman whose name was written in my mother’s final letter.
