Chapter 8: The Plan Nobody Told Me About

My father held the document like it weighed a hundred pounds.

The room was still.

Even Vanessa stopped pretending.

She knew.

Whatever was on that page…

She knew.

“Dad?””

Marcus looked at me.

Then at Vanessa.

“What is this?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

“Marcus.””

“No.””

His voice was firm.

He looked down at the paper again.

Then he read silently.

I watched his face.

The confusion.

The disbelief.

Then the anger.

“What did you sign me up for?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“It wasn’t a big deal.””

I almost couldn’t believe she said it again.

Not a big deal.

That was her favorite phrase.

Like saying it enough times could make something stop hurting.

Marcus looked at her.

“Maya’s name is on this.””

“She’s my stepdaughter.””

“That’s not permission.””

“It was for her benefit.””

I stepped closer.

“What was?””

Nobody answered.

My father turned the page.

Then his eyes stopped.

I saw the moment he understood.

“Vanessa…”

She looked away.

“What?””

“What is this?””

His voice was quieter.

That scared me.

Because loud anger passes.

Quiet disappointment stays.

He looked at me.

“Maya, did anyone talk to you about changing schools?””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

Vanessa immediately looked at him.

“Marcus.””

“No.””

He looked back at me.

“Answer me.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The room shifted.

I felt like I was falling.

“What school?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus held up the document.

“An application.””

I stared at him.

“For what?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Maya, listen.””

“No.””

I backed away.

“Why is there an application with my name on it?””

Vanessa’s expression softened.

A fake softness.

The kind I had seen before.

“I was trying to give you a better opportunity.””

“Without telling me?””

“You’re fourteen.””

“So I don’t get a choice?””

She didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Marcus looked furious.

“You were planning to move her?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not move.””

“Then what?””

“A change.””

“Without discussing it with me?””

Vanessa sighed.

“You’re always working.””

My father looked stunned.

“So your solution was to secretly change our daughter’s life?””

Nobody said anything.

The words hurt.

Our daughter.

Marcus still saw me that way.

Even when Vanessa didn’t.

Brielle sat quietly.

Then she spoke.

“Mom…”

Vanessa looked at her.

“What now?””

Brielle’s voice trembled.

“Is this why you wanted Maya gone?””

My body went still.

Vanessa didn’t answer.

And that silence confirmed everything.

Marcus looked at her.

“You weren’t just replacing her on a vacation.””

Vanessa looked angry now.

“I was trying to create balance.””

“By removing her?””

“No.””

“Then explain.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with frustration.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then make me understand.””

She looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something behind her anger.

Resentment.

“She has everything.””

I froze.

Marcus stared at her.

“What?””

Vanessa continued.

“She has your attention. Your protection. Your last name. Everything.””

I felt tears forming.

Because I never knew someone could look at love and see unfairness.

Marcus shook his head.

“You think loving my daughter takes something away from yours?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Brielle looked hurt.

“Mom, that’s not fair.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You wouldn’t understand.””

Brielle stood up.

“No. I do.””

Everyone looked at her.

“I understand that you keep making decisions for me too.””

Vanessa went silent.

Brielle continued.

“You said I needed this trip more.””

My heart stopped.

“You told me Maya wouldn’t mind.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She had said that?

Brielle looked at me.

“I thought she knew.””

The pain on her face was real.

“I thought you agreed.””

I shook my head slowly.

“I didn’t know anything.””

My father closed his eyes.

Like he was trying to process every secret in front of him.

Then his phone rang again.

The same airline number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

Then his expression changed.

“What do you mean the reservation was made from another device?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“Which device?””

The room went silent.

My father listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“The airline has the login information.””

Nobody moved.

Marcus’s voice became cold.

“The changes came from your personal tablet.””

Vanessa’s face went completely blank.

May you like

And then Brielle whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“Mom doesn’t even use that tablet anymore.””
