Chapter 12: The Name Hidden In The Past
My father moved immediately.
Not panicked.
Not reckless.
Focused.
He locked my phone.
Changed passwords.
Called the airline again.
Every movement was careful.
Every word was controlled.
But I knew him.
I knew when he was scared.
He kept looking at me.
Checking if I was okay.
Even while everything around us was falling apart.
“Dad,” I said quietly.
He stopped.
“What?””
“What is happening?””
He looked at me.
And for a moment, he didn’t have an answer.
That scared me more than anything.
Because my father always had answers.
“I don’t know yet.””
The honesty hurt.
Vanessa sat on the sofa, silent.
Brielle sat beside her, but there was distance between them now.
A distance that hadn’t been there before.
Marcus ended the call.
“The airline is freezing the account.””
“Is that enough?””
“For now.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why would anyone want my information?””
She didn’t respond.
My father noticed.
“Vanessa.””
She looked up.
“You know something.””
She shook her head.
“I know pieces.””
“Then give us the pieces.””
Vanessa looked at her hands.
“Daniel told me Maya’s mother left something behind.””
The room stopped.
My mother.
A person who was usually only mentioned in old photos and quiet conversations.
I hadn’t heard her name in months.
“What did she leave?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Daniel said it was complicated.””
My father laughed quietly.
“Of course he did.””
I looked between them.
“Dad?””
He looked at me.
“Your mother had a few legal documents before she passed.””
I had known that.
But not details.
“About what?””
Marcus hesitated.
That hesitation told me there was something he had never told me.
“Maya…”
I stepped back.
“No.””
My voice shook.
“What?””
“Nothing.””
“You’re doing it too.””
His face changed.
“What?””
“You’re deciding what I can handle.””
The words surprised him.
Because they were true.
Everyone had been making choices around me.
Vanessa.
Daniel.
Even my father.
Marcus looked hurt.
But he nodded.
“You’re right.””
He sat down.
“You deserve the truth.””
Vanessa looked nervous.
My father continued.
“Your mother had a trust account.””
I frowned.
“A trust?””
“Yes.””
“For me?””
He nodded.
“It was created when you were born.””
My heart started racing.
“Why didn’t I know?””
“Because it was protected.””
“Protected from who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“From people who might try to take it.””
The room went quiet.
I looked at her.
“And you knew?””
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“I found out after I married your father.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“How?””
She looked away.
“Daniel told me.””
There it was.
The connection.
Again.
My father stood.
“Daniel knew about the trust?””
Vanessa nodded.
“And he wanted access.””
My stomach turned.
“So this wasn’t about a vacation.””
“No.””
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“It never was.””
The suitcase.
The ticket.
The school.
The fake signature.
It was all part of something bigger.
Someone had tried to move pieces around my life.
And I was the last person to know.
Marcus grabbed his phone.
“I’m calling a lawyer.””
Vanessa suddenly stood.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
She looked terrified.
“There’s one more thing.””
My father froze.
“What?””
Vanessa’s eyes moved toward me.
“The reason Daniel knew about Maya’s trust…”
She swallowed.
“Is because someone gave him access.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
And then she said the one thing none of us expected.
“It wasn’t me.””
A long silence.
Then my father whispered:
“Who was it?””
Vanessa looked down.
May you like
And quietly answered:
“Someone inside your family.””
