Chapter 10: The Father Who Never Died
I stared at the photograph until the screen went dark.
Then I unlocked my phone and opened it again.
The same face.
The same scar running from the left temple toward the jaw.
The same small indentation beneath the chin that I remembered from the few childhood photographs I had studied over the years.
Michael Bennett.
My biological father.
The man I had watched being lowered into a grave when I was ten years old.
The man whose death had shaped every decision of my childhood.
The man who had supposedly died in a truck accident.
Alive.
I looked toward the diner entrance.
Arthur had disappeared into the rain.
Marcus was running after him.
Evelyn stood beside the table, staring at my phone.
"Where did you get that photograph?"" she whispered.
"Someone just sent it.""
She took the phone from my hand.
The moment she saw the image, her knees nearly buckled.
"Oh, Michael.""
I grabbed her arm.
"You recognize him?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
"Where is he?""
"I don't know.""
"Then find out!""
Evelyn stared at the photograph again.
"That scar...""
"What?""
"Your father didn't have that scar when he died.""
I swallowed.
"Maybe the accident caused it.""
She looked at me.
"Noah, if that photograph is real, then everything we believed about that night is wrong.""
My phone vibrated again.
Another message.
*St. Matthew's Rehabilitation Center. Room 214. Come alone.*
I showed Evelyn.
She immediately shook her head.
"Absolutely not.""
"That's where he is.""
"It's probably a trap.""
"What if it isn't?""
She grabbed my wrist.
"Listen to me. Someone has spent ten years making sure you never discovered the truth. They're not going to suddenly become generous.""
I looked at the photograph.
"What if he's been waiting for me?""
Evelyn had no answer.
I called Rebecca Mills.
She answered immediately.
"Noah, where are you?""
"At the diner. I received a photograph of my father.""
Silence.
"Your father?""
"Michael. He's alive.""
Rebecca took a sharp breath.
"Send me the photograph.""
I forwarded it.
A few seconds passed.
Then she spoke.
"Don't move. I'm checking the facility.""
"St. Matthew's Rehabilitation Center.""
"Stay where you are.""
"Rebecca, I need to see him.""
"And I need to make sure you don't walk into another trap.""
She ended the call.
Evelyn sat down.
For the first time that night, she looked older than her years.
"I thought he was dead," she whispered.
I sat beside her.
"Did you know he might have survived?""
"No.""
"Did you ever see his body?""
Her eyes filled.
"Noah...""
"Did you?""
She shook her head.
I stood.
"Then how could you be certain?""
Evelyn looked at me.
"Because Arthur told me he watched them take Michael away.""
I felt another piece of my childhood collapse.
Arthur.
Everything seemed to lead back to him.
The man who had raised me.
The man who had hidden the truth.
The man who had just run away when someone claimed to have evidence against him.
My phone rang.
Rebecca.
"I've confirmed the facility exists. There's a patient registered under a different name in Room 214. The medical records are restricted.""
"Is it him?""
"I can't confirm that yet.""
"Then I'm going.""
"Noah, wait.""
But I had already grabbed my jacket.
Evelyn stood.
"I'm coming with you.""
We drove through the rain.
St. Matthew's was twenty minutes away, a private rehabilitation center surrounded by pine trees and an old iron fence.
At the reception desk, I gave the name from the message.
The receptionist frowned.
"Mr. Bennett, I'm not permitted to disclose patient information.""
I showed her the photograph.
Her expression changed.
"Where did you get that?""
"Is he here?""
She looked toward the security camera.
Then she lowered her voice.
"Room 214.""
I nearly stopped breathing.
"Can I see him?""
She hesitated.
"He's been asking for you.""
The words hit me harder than anything else that night.
My father had been asking for me.
All these years.
I followed a nurse down a quiet hallway.
Evelyn stayed close behind.
At Room 214, the nurse knocked gently.
"Mr. Bennett? Your son is here.""
A weak voice came from inside.
"Which one?""
The nurse opened the door.
I stepped into the room.
A man lay in a hospital bed near the window.
His hair was mostly white. His face was thinner than I remembered. A medical monitor blinked beside him.
He turned his head.
His eyes settled on me.
For several seconds, he didn't speak.
Then his lower lip trembled.
"Noah?""
My legs nearly gave way.
I walked closer.
"Are you...?""
He nodded.
"Michael Bennett.""
I stared at him.
I wanted to run into his arms.
I wanted to scream.
I wanted to ask why he had let me grow up believing he was dead.
Instead, I stood beside the bed and whispered:
"Why did you leave me?""
His eyes filled with tears.
"I didn't, son.""
"Ten years.""
"I know.""
"I went to your funeral.""
He covered his face.
"I know.""
"Arthur raised me.""
Michael looked toward Evelyn.
She was crying silently.
Then he looked back at me.
"Arthur saved your life.""
I froze.
"What?""
Michael struggled to sit up.
"Richard wanted you gone. He knew your identity was connected to the money. He knew you were the only person who could eventually challenge his claim.""
"Then why didn't you come back?""
Michael closed his eyes.
"Because I couldn't.""
I pulled a chair beside the bed.
"Tell me everything.""
He looked toward the door.
"Where is Arthur?""
"I don't know.""
Michael's expression changed.
"Did you see him tonight?""
"Yes.""
"Did he bring the blue key?""
I frowned.
"What blue key?""
Michael closed his eyes again.
"Then he still hasn't told you.""
"Tell me what?""
Michael reached beneath his pillow.
He removed a small metal key attached to a blue plastic tag.
I stared at it.
"The hospital key?""
He nodded.
"Your mother gave Arthur a matching key the night she died.""
"Why?""
"Because she knew he would come back for the documents.""
I looked at Evelyn.
She stepped closer.
"What documents?""
Michael swallowed.
"The original guardianship papers. The trust records. And the evidence showing who ordered Sarah's murder.""
I felt my blood turn cold.
"Who ordered it?""
Michael looked directly at me.
"Richard Vale.""
I clenched my fists.
"Then why is Arthur protecting him?""
Michael shook his head.
"Arthur isn't protecting Richard anymore.""
I stared at him.
"Then why did he lie?""
Michael's eyes filled.
"Because he made a deal with Richard.""
"What deal?""
Michael gripped my hand.
"Arthur agreed to let Richard believe I was dead in exchange for keeping you alive.""
I couldn't breathe.
My father continued.
"But the deal had one condition.""
"What?""
He looked toward the hallway.
"Arthur was never supposed to tell you that I survived.""
Suddenly, the lights in the room flickered.
The monitor beeped faster.
A nurse hurried inside.
"Mr. Bennett, you need to lie back.""
Michael grabbed my wrist.
"Noah. Listen.""
"What?""
His voice dropped.
"Richard knows you're here.""
The door slammed open.
A man in a dark suit stood in the hallway.
He was holding a photograph.
It showed me entering the rehabilitation center.
Richard Vale smiled.
"Family reunion," he said.
May you like
Then he looked at Michael.
"Hello, old friend.""
