Chapter 14: The Last Promise
The hospital room was silent after Daniel told us where to look.
The place where I was born.
St. Matthew's Hospital had been renovated twice since my birth. The maternity ward was now a pediatric department, and the old delivery rooms had become storage offices.
But Evelyn remembered something.
"Your mother kept a small locker near the maternity ward," she said.
"She used it when she worked at the hospital.""
Arthur nodded.
"She told me about it once.""
Rebecca looked at him.
"Why didn't you mention this earlier?""
"Because I thought Richard had already found it.""
I looked at the blue key.
"Then let's go.""
Rebecca insisted that two officers accompany us. Holloway was in custody, but we couldn't assume Richard had no other allies.
We walked through the hospital corridors.
The maternity ward smelled faintly of disinfectant and fresh flowers. A nurse recognized Evelyn and directed us toward a narrow hallway.
At the end stood a row of old metal lockers.
Arthur stopped at number seventeen.
"Sarah's.""
The lock was rusted.
I inserted the key.
It turned.
Inside was a small wooden box wrapped in a faded baby blanket.
I recognized it immediately.
It was the blanket from my first birthday photograph.
Evelyn carefully lifted the box.
"Open it.""
Inside were three items.
A sealed envelope.
A tiny silver bracelet.
And a photograph of Michael holding me outside the hospital.
On the back, Sarah had written:
The man who chooses you is your father.
I stared at the words.
My throat tightened.
Evelyn opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter addressed to me.
"Read it," she whispered.
I unfolded the paper.
My dearest Noah,
If you are reading this, then the people I feared have finally been exposed.
I want you to know that I loved you before I knew your face. I loved you before I knew whether you would have your father's eyes or my smile.
There are things about your birth that I never wanted you to learn from strangers.
Daniel Harper is your biological father. He was once a good man, but greed changed him. He helped Richard steal from our family, and when I discovered the truth, he chose money over us.
I stopped.
The letter continued.
Michael knows everything. He has agreed to raise you as his own son because he loves you. He has never asked for anything in return.
If anyone tells you that blood is more important than love, remember this: the people who truly belong to you are the people who stand beside you when standing beside you costs them something.
My eyes blurred.
Arthur has also made mistakes. He let Richard into our lives. But I believe there is still good in him. I hope he finds the courage to become the man he promised Michael he would be.
Please don't spend your life searching for revenge. Search for truth. Then build a life that the people who hurt us cannot control.
I love you, my beautiful boy.
Mom.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
For the first time, I felt as though I had heard my mother speak directly to me.
Arthur stood quietly beside the lockers.
"I should have given you that years ago.""
I looked at him.
"Why didn't you?""
"Because I was ashamed.""
"Of what?""
"Of the fact that I knew she wanted you to have it. I kept telling myself I would give it to you when you were older, when you could understand. Then one year passed.
Then another. Eventually, I was more afraid of your questions than Richard's threats.""
I folded the letter.
"You can't give me back those years.""
"I know.""
"But you can stop lying now.""
Arthur nodded.
"I will.""
Rebecca examined the other documents in the box.
"These are the original adoption papers.""
She read through them carefully.
Then she smiled.
"Noah, this is important.""
"What?""
"Michael legally adopted you when you were six months old. The adoption was finalized before Sarah died. Richard has no parental rights, regardless of his biological relationship to you.""
I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.
"So he can't claim me?""
"No.""
Evelyn hugged me.
"Your mother made sure of that.""
The officers photographed the contents of the locker and secured the evidence.
By evening, Richard and Holloway had been formally charged. The hospital recordings, financial records, and testimony from Linda Harper created a case far stronger than anything Richard had expected.
Daniel agreed to cooperate.
He admitted helping Richard move money through shell companies and confirmed that Richard had arranged the forged medication order. His testimony also identified the doctor who had altered Sarah's medical records.
But there was still one question I couldn't stop thinking about.
Where was Michael's body?
The next morning, Arthur took me to the old warehouse.
It had been abandoned for years. Broken windows lined the upper walls, and weeds pushed through cracks in the concrete.
He led me to a storage room behind the loading dock.
"Michael kept a second set of records here.""
"Why?""
"In case something happened to him.""
Inside, we found an old metal cabinet.
Arthur opened it.
There were photographs, business records, and a small wooden box.
Inside the box was Michael's wedding ring.
I picked it up.
Arthur's voice became quiet.
"After the crash, I searched the vehicle. I found this near the passenger seat.""
"Why didn't you give it to Evelyn?""
"Richard was watching me. I hid it here.""
I turned the ring over.
There was a tiny engraving inside.
Forever your father.
My eyes filled.
Arthur looked toward the empty loading dock.
"Michael was a better man than I ever deserved to know.""
I closed my hand around the ring.
"Did he know you took the money?""
Arthur nodded.
"Yes. He confronted me before he died.""
"What did he say?""
Arthur stared at the floor.
"He said I could spend the rest of my life trying to undo what I'd done, but I could never change what happened to Sarah.""
I looked at him.
"And what did you do?""
"I took care of you.""
"Was that enough?""
"No.""
Arthur's voice cracked.
"But it was the only thing I had left.""
I stood beside him for a long time.
Then I placed Michael's ring in my pocket.
"Let's go home.""
Arthur looked at me.
"Home?""
I nodded.
"Not this place.""
He understood.
As we walked toward the exit, Rebecca called.
Her voice was urgent.
"Noah, there's something you need to know.""
"What?""
"We found a second account connected to Richard. It contains money transferred out of the trust shortly before his arrest.""
"How much?""
"Four million dollars.""
I stopped walking.
"Can they recover it?""
"We're working on that. But there's a problem.""
"What problem?""
"The account was opened under your name.""
My stomach tightened.
"How?""
Rebecca paused.
"Someone used your identity to authorize a transfer yesterday.""
I looked at Arthur.
He looked just as confused as I felt.
May you like
Then Rebecca added:
"And the authorization was signed by someone who was supposed to be dead.""
