Chapter 11: The Deal That Kept Me Alive

Richard Vale walked into the room as though he owned it.

He glanced at the medical monitor, adjusted his expensive watch, and pulled a chair toward the bed.

"Michael. You look terrible.""

My father stared at him.

"You're still the same coward.""

Richard laughed.

"After all these years, that's the best you can do?""

I stepped between them.

"Get out.""

Richard looked at me.

"Noah. You've grown up.""

"Get out of the room.""

He ignored me.

Instead, he placed a small envelope on the bedside table.

"Michael, I brought something for you.""

My father didn't touch it.

"What?""

"An agreement. You sign it, and I disappear from your life forever.""

Michael laughed weakly.

"You've been trying to disappear me for ten years.""

Richard's expression hardened.

"Careful.""

I moved closer.

"You're not threatening him again.""

Richard turned toward me.

"Do you know what your father did to keep you alive?""

I looked at Michael.

He stared at the ceiling.

Richard continued.

"Your father made a deal with me. He agreed to remain legally dead. In return, I agreed to leave you alone.""

"Why?""

"Because Michael had stolen something that belonged to me.""

My father struggled to sit up.

"Those accounts belonged to Noah.""

Richard smiled.

"That's what you've convinced yourself.""

I looked at the envelope.

"What do you want?""

Richard opened it.

Inside was a legal document.

A settlement agreement.

My name appeared across the top.

It stated that I voluntarily relinquished all claims to the Bennett Family Holdings trust.

In exchange, Richard would transfer a sum of money to an account of my choosing.

The amount was $500,000.

I laughed.

"You're offering me half a million dollars to sign away my father's money?""

"You're a smart young man.""

"No.""

Richard leaned forward.

"Think carefully. You could buy a house. Start a business.

Help Arthur. Take care of your future.""

"Leave Arthur out of this.""

Richard smiled.

"Arthur is the reason you're sitting here today.""

I turned toward my father.

Michael's face had gone pale.

"Is that true?""

Richard answered for him.

"Arthur agreed to my terms. He took money. He helped conceal evidence. He kept your father's survival a secret.""

I stared at Michael.

"Did Arthur know you were alive?""

My father nodded.

"Yes.""

"For ten years?""

"Yes.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Why did he let me visit your grave?""

Michael closed his eyes.

"Because I asked him to.""

The answer was worse than anything Richard could have said.

I stepped backward.

"You asked him to let me believe you were dead?""

Michael nodded.

"I thought it was the only way to keep you safe.""

I shook my head.

"You don't get to decide that for me.""

"I know.""

"You don't get to disappear and call it protection.""

"I know, son.""

I turned away.

For ten years, I had imagined what I would say if I ever saw my father again.

I had imagined hugging him.

I had imagined telling him about my first touchdown, my first girlfriend, my high school graduation, and the championship trophy.

Instead, I was standing in a hospital room trying to understand why the two men who had supposedly loved me most had made decisions about my life without asking me.

Richard tapped the agreement.

"Sign it, Noah.""

I looked at him.

"No.""

His smile vanished.

"Then things become complicated.""

"Good.""

He stood.

"You have no idea how many people have worked to keep this situation quiet.""

"Then maybe it's time they stopped.""

Richard leaned toward me.

"Your father has spent ten years hiding. Arthur has spent ten years lying. And Marcus has spent ten years pretending he doesn't know what happened.""

He straightened his jacket.

"Do you really believe you're going to fix everything with a few questions?""

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone.

"Actually, I think I just did.""

Richard looked at the screen.

A recording timer was running.

His face changed.

"Turn that off.""

"No.""

He grabbed for my phone.

I stepped back.

A nurse rushed into the room.

"Sir! You cannot touch him!""

Richard released my arm.

For a moment, he looked genuinely angry.

Then he smiled.

"Fine. Keep your recording.""

He walked toward the door.

But before leaving, he turned back.

"Michael, you should tell your son what happened to Sarah's original hospital records.""

Michael went still.

Richard continued.

"Especially the page showing who signed the medication order.""

Then he left.

I looked at my father.

"What was he talking about?""

Michael stared at the doorway.

"Richard is trying to confuse you.""

"Then tell me the truth.""

My father slowly reached beneath his mattress.

He removed a thin folder.

Inside was a medical report.

The original medication chart.

A doctor's signature appeared at the bottom.

Dr. Peter Lawson.

I recognized the name.

He was the physician who had treated my mother.

"Who is he?"" I asked.

Michael answered quietly.

"The man who helped Richard.""

I looked at the chart.

There was another signature beside his.

Nurse Linda Harper.

The same nurse from the photograph.

"Did she give my mother the medication?""

Michael shook his head.

"No. She refused.""

I frowned.

"Then why is her signature here?""

"Because somebody copied it.""

I looked at the document.

The signature was slightly different from the one on the hospital photograph.

"Who did it?""

Michael looked toward the window.

"Someone who had access to the hospital's medical records.""

"Who?""

He took a slow breath.

"Arthur.""

I felt the room spin.

"What?""

Michael closed his eyes.

"Arthur was working as a hospital maintenance supervisor at the time. He had access to several restricted areas.""

I stepped away.

"You're saying Arthur forged the medical chart?""

"He told me he had been forced to.""

"Forced by Richard?""

Michael nodded.

"Richard threatened to expose Arthur's involvement in the financial fraud. He told him that if he didn't cooperate, he would make sure you were taken away.""

I looked at the signature again.

"Did Arthur help kill my mother?""

Michael's voice broke.

"Noah, I don't know.""

That answer terrified me.

I sat down.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then Michael reached for my hand.

"There's something else you need to know.""

I looked up.

"What?""

"Your mother didn't die immediately.""

I froze.

"What do you mean?""

"She survived the first dose of medication. She woke up long enough to speak to Arthur.""

My throat tightened.

"What did she say?""

Michael's eyes filled.

"She asked him to bring you to her.""

"Did he?""

He shook his head.

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because Richard was in the hallway. Arthur believed he would hurt you if you entered the room.""

I covered my mouth.

My mother had been alive.

She had asked to see me.

And I had been kept away from her.

Michael continued.

"Before she lost consciousness, she told Arthur where she had hidden the original recording.""

"Where?""

He looked at the blue key beside his pillow.

"Under the old chapel at St. Matthew's.""

I stared.

"The chapel?""

"There's a storage room beneath it. Your mother kept a metal box there.""

"What is inside?""

"The original evidence. The documents Richard couldn't find.""

I reached for the key.

Michael held my wrist.

"There's one more thing.""

"What?""

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

"Your mother left a letter.""

"To me?""

He nodded.

"She wrote it the night she died.""

I swallowed.

"Where is it?""

Michael looked toward the door.

"Arthur has it.""

I closed my eyes.

Of course he did.

Everything came back to Arthur.

I stood.

"I'm going to find him.""

Michael grabbed my hand.

"Noah, wait.""

"What?""

"Don't hate him before you hear the whole truth.""

I looked at my father.

"How much more truth is there?""

He struggled to answer.

Then he whispered:

"Arthur wasn't the only person who signed the document that gave Richard control over you.""

I frowned.

"What?""

Michael looked at me.

"Your mother signed it too.""

I froze.

"That's impossible.""

"She did.""

"Why would she give Richard custody of me?""

Michael began crying.

"Because she believed she was signing a document that would protect you from him.""

I stared at the paper.

The signature was real.

My mother's.

But beneath it was a second page.

A page that had been added after she signed.

And on that page was a clause stating that if both parents became unavailable, Richard Vale would become my legal guardian.

I looked at Michael.

"Who added this?""

He whispered:

"Someone who knew your mother wouldn't be alive to challenge it.""

Suddenly, the room's door opened.

Arthur stood there.

His shirt was soaked from the rain.

His face was bruised.

He looked at Michael.

Then at me.

And in his trembling hand was a yellow envelope.

"I found it," he whispered.

My heart stopped.

"The letter from your mother.""

He placed it on the bed.

Then he looked at Michael.

"There's something else you both need to know.""

Michael's expression changed.

"What happened?""

Arthur swallowed.

"Richard wasn't the only person who wanted Sarah dead.""

He turned toward me.

"Your mother was killed because she discovered who had been stealing the money.""

I stared at him.

"Who?""

Arthur's eyes filled.

May you like

Then he whispered:

"Your mother discovered that the money was being stolen by someone in her own family.""
