Chapter 12: The Letter My Mother Left Behind

Arthur placed the yellow envelope on the bed.

For a long time, nobody touched it.

The handwriting on the front was delicate and familiar from the few cards I had seen in my childhood.

*For my son, Noah.*

I reached toward it.

Arthur stopped me.

"Before you read this, I need you to understand something.""

I looked at him.

"Not another secret.""

"No. Not another secret.""

His voice shook.

"I've spent ten years telling myself that silence was the same as protection. It wasn't. I was wrong.""

I pulled the envelope toward me.

"Then start talking.""

Arthur sat beside the bed.

"Your mother discovered that the money wasn't being stolen by Richard alone. Someone in her family had been helping him move it.""

I looked at Evelyn.

She had gone pale.

"What family member?""

Arthur looked at her.

"Her brother.""

I frowned.

"My mother's brother?""

Evelyn nodded slowly.

"Daniel Harper.""

The name meant nothing to me.

"Who was he?""

"Sarah's older brother," Evelyn explained.

"He worked in the company's accounting department.""

I looked at the financial records.

"Was he involved in the fake accounts?""

Arthur nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did my father know?""

"He suspected it.""

I turned toward Michael.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Michael looked exhausted.

"Because Daniel was the only person your mother trusted after everything happened. When we discovered he was involved, Sarah refused to believe it.""

Evelyn sat down.

"Daniel had been stealing money for years. Richard gave him access to the company's records, and Daniel created the false transactions.""

I looked at Arthur.

"Did he kill my mother?""

Arthur shook his head.

"I don't know.""

"Then why did you say he wanted her dead?""

"Because he was the one who told Richard she had the original documents.""

I looked at the yellow envelope.

"What's in the letter?""

Arthur pushed it toward me.

"Read it.""

I carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

My mother's handwriting covered both sides.

I began reading.

My sweet Noah,

If you are reading this, then I wasn't able to keep my promise.

I promised your father that I would be there for every birthday, every scraped knee, every school play, and every football game.

I wanted to watch you grow up.

My eyes filled.

I wanted to hear your first words. I wanted to teach you how to ride a bicycle. I wanted to tell you that you were loved every single day.

I stopped.

My hands were shaking.

Evelyn reached over and squeezed my shoulder.

I continued.

There are people who believe money is more important than family. I have learned that some of them will destroy the very people who love them to get it.

Your father has been trying to protect you. Arthur has been trying too, although I am no longer certain he understands the difference between protecting someone and keeping them in the dark.

I looked up.

Arthur lowered his head.

The letter continued.

If Arthur gives you this letter, it means he finally found the courage to tell you the truth.

Please don't judge him only by his worst mistake.

I paused.

Then I read the next paragraph.

He made a terrible choice. He allowed Richard into our home. He told him where I kept the documents. He believed Richard only wanted to frighten us into silence.

My stomach tightened.

But when Richard came that night, Arthur tried to stop him.

I looked at Arthur.

He was crying.

I continued.

I heard them arguing outside my bedroom. Richard wanted the blue key. Arthur refused to give it to him.

Then I heard a crash.

When Arthur entered my room, he was bleeding.

I stopped reading.

Arthur slowly rolled up his sleeve.

The scar on his forearm was the same one I had seen earlier.

My mother had known.

She had seen him injured.

I continued.

He told me to take Noah and run. I couldn't. I was too weak to stand.

I asked him to bring you to me.

He promised he would.

I looked at Arthur.

"Why didn't you?""

He covered his face.

"Richard was standing outside the door.""

"That doesn't answer my question.""

Arthur lowered his hands.

"I was afraid he would take you.""

I felt tears running down my cheeks.

My mother had wanted to hold me one last time.

And the man who raised me had been too frightened to bring me into her room.

I looked down again.

The final paragraph was underlined.

Noah, there is one thing you must never forget.

The person who caused the most damage in our family wasn't the man who stole the money.

It was the person who helped him because he believed he had something to gain.

Find the original records.

Find Daniel.

And ask him why he changed the name on your birth certificate.

I stopped breathing.

I looked at the paper again.

Why he changed the name on my birth certificate?

I looked toward Michael.

"What does that mean?""

My father looked away.

Arthur stood.

"Michael, tell him.""

My father shook his head.

"Not yet.""

I slammed the letter onto the bed.

"No more not yet!""

Michael closed his eyes.

Then he spoke.

"Daniel Harper wasn't your mother's only brother.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

"She had a younger brother named Thomas. He died when he was nineteen.""

"Why does that matter?""

Michael swallowed.

"Because before you were born, Sarah discovered that Thomas had been adopted under a different name.""

I frowned.

"What does that have to do with me?""

Evelyn looked at Michael.

"Tell him.""

My father reached for my hand.

"Noah, your birth certificate was changed because someone was trying to hide your biological identity.""

I pulled my hand away.

"What?""

He took a breath.

"Your original birth certificate listed a different father.""

The room became silent.

I looked at him.

"Who?""

Michael stared at me.

Then he said:

"Daniel Harper.""

I couldn't move.

"That's impossible.""

Michael shook his head.

"Daniel wasn't your biological uncle.""

I looked at Evelyn.

She was crying now.

My father continued.

"Your mother had been married before she met me. Her first husband was Daniel's father. When that marriage ended, Sarah kept the Bennett name.""

I struggled to understand.

"Are you saying Daniel was my stepbrother?""

"No.""

Michael closed his eyes.

"Daniel was your biological father.""

The room seemed to disappear.

I looked at the man lying in the bed.

The man I had spent my entire childhood believing was my father.

Then I looked at Arthur.

Then Evelyn.

Nobody spoke.

I finally managed to whisper:

"Then who am I?""

Michael reached for me.

"You're still my son.""

"How?""

"Because I raised you from the moment you were born. Sarah and I agreed that you would carry my name. I knew the truth. I loved you as my own.""

I stepped away.

"Did Arthur know?""

Michael nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did Richard?""

"Yes.""

I looked at the birth certificate.

The document I had been carrying in my wallet since I got my driver's license suddenly seemed meaningless.

"Why did everyone lie?""

Michael's voice broke.

"Because Daniel was dangerous.""

I stared at him.

"What did he do?""

Michael hesitated.

Then Arthur spoke.

"Daniel was the person who originally introduced Richard to the company.""

I turned.

"Why?""

"Because he wanted access to your mother's inheritance.""

Evelyn wiped her eyes.

"Sarah inherited money from her parents. Daniel believed he was entitled to half. When she refused to give it to him, he began working with Richard.""

I looked at the letter.

"Did Daniel know about the accounts in my name?""

"Yes," Michael answered.

"Did he know Richard was using my identity?""

"Yes.""

I felt sick.

"Then he was stealing from his own child?""

Michael nodded.

"That's why Sarah confronted him.""

I looked at Arthur.

"Did he kill her?""

Arthur didn't answer.

Instead, he reached into his pocket and removed a small photograph.

It showed a man standing beside my mother outside the hospital.

The same man from the photograph I had seen earlier.

Daniel Harper.

But there was something written on the back.

He came to see Sarah at 8:15 p.m.

I looked at the hospital report.

Her official time of death was 9:32 p.m.

"Did he go into her room?""

Arthur nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did he leave?""

"According to the security footage, no.""

I stared at him.

"Then how could he have been involved?""

Arthur looked toward Michael.

"Because the man who left the hospital wearing Daniel's coat wasn't Daniel.""

My heart pounded.

"What?""

Michael slowly sat up.

"Daniel had an identical twin.""

Evelyn looked horrified.

"That's impossible. Their mother told me Daniel's twin died at birth.""

Michael shook his head.

"He didn't.""

I felt my hands go cold.

"Who was the twin?""

Michael looked directly at me.

Then he said:

"Richard Vale.""

Before I could respond, the hospital door opened.

A nurse rushed inside.

"Mr. Bennett, I'm sorry, but we have a problem.""

Michael gripped the bed.

"What?""

"The police are here.""

Arthur stepped forward.

"Which officers?""

The nurse looked toward the hallway.

"Detective Holloway.""

Evelyn stood immediately.

"Don't let him in.""

But the nurse was already backing away.

A familiar voice came from the corridor.

"Too late.""

Detective James Holloway entered the room.

He was wearing a dark coat and holding a leather folder.

He looked at Michael.

Then at me.

Finally, he placed a photograph on the bedside table.

It showed a younger Richard Vale standing beside a newborn baby.

The baby was wearing a hospital bracelet.

On the bracelet was my name.

Holloway looked directly at me.

"There's something your father hasn't told you.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

He opened his folder.

"Richard Vale isn't your uncle's twin brother.""

He paused.

"He's your biological father.""

My entire body went cold.

Holloway continued.

"And the man lying in that bed isn't Michael Bennett.""

He pointed toward the medical monitor.

"His real name is Daniel Harper.""

The room fell silent.

I turned toward the man I had called my father.

His eyes filled with tears.

Then he whispered:

"I'm sorry, Noah.""

And somewhere behind Detective Holloway, a second set of footsteps entered the hallway.

A voice I recognized immediately spoke.

"That's enough, James.""

May you like

Richard Vale stepped into the room.

"Let me tell my son the rest.""
