Chapter 13: The Truth Beneath the Bloodline
Richard Vale stood in the doorway, smiling as though he had just arrived at a family celebration.
Behind him, Detective Holloway lowered his eyes.
I looked from Richard to the man in the hospital bed.
"Tell me this isn't true," I whispered.
The man who had called himself Michael Bennett reached for my hand.
"Noah, please.""
I pulled away.
"What's your real name?""
He closed his eyes.
"Daniel Harper.""
The room seemed to shrink around me.
Daniel.
My mother's brother.
The man whose name had appeared in the financial records. The man accused of helping Richard steal millions. The man who had supposedly been responsible for my mother's death.
And I had just called him Dad.
Richard pulled a chair toward the bed.
"Family reunions are always emotional.""
"Shut up," I said.
He raised his eyebrows.
"Such a temper. You really are your father's son.""
"Which father?""
His smile widened.
"That's what we're here to discuss.""
Arthur stepped between us.
"Don't listen to him, Noah.""
Richard looked at Arthur.
"Still pretending you're the good man? You took my money. You helped me find Michael's documents. You kept the boy's real father away from him.""
Arthur's face tightened.
"I made mistakes.""
"You made a career out of them.""
I turned toward Arthur.
"Why did you let me believe Michael was alive?""
Arthur looked at the hospital bed.
"Because I thought it was the only way to keep you from Richard.""
"That's not an answer.""
He swallowed.
"Daniel contacted me three weeks ago. He said he knew where Michael's remains were. He offered to help me find them if I brought him the blue key.""
I stared at the man in the bed.
"So he sent me the photograph?""
Daniel nodded.
"I thought if you came, we could expose Richard.""
"You pretended to be my father.""
"I was desperate.""
"You used my grief.""
Daniel began crying.
"I know.""
Richard laughed.
"Don't be so hard on him, Noah. Daniel has always been weak. He helped me steal from Sarah, then spent ten years hiding from the consequences.""
Daniel looked up.
"You're the one who killed her.""
Richard's smile disappeared.
"Careful, brother.""
I stepped forward.
"Did you kill my mother?""
Richard stared at me.
"Sarah was going to destroy everything.""
"She was your sister-in-law.""
"She was a threat.""
"Did you kill her?""
He sighed.
"She refused to cooperate. She had documents, recordings, and enough information to send me to prison. I gave her every opportunity to walk away.""
Arthur moved forward.
"You gave her a glass of water with medication in it.""
Richard glanced at him.
"You weren't supposed to be in the room.""
I felt my stomach turn.
"What?""
Arthur's voice shook.
"I saw him leave her room. He told me she'd taken something to calm down. When I went inside, she could barely speak.""
"Why didn't you call an ambulance?"" I demanded.
"I did.""
"Then why did she die?""
Arthur looked at me.
"Because Richard had already arranged for the doctor to give her another dose.""
Daniel began sobbing.
"I should have stopped him.""
I turned toward him.
"Yes. You should have.""
Richard stood.
"This conversation is over.""
Detective Holloway moved toward Arthur.
"Give me the recorder.""
Arthur's hand tightened around the small device.
"No.""
Holloway pulled a pistol from his coat.
"Now.""
Evelyn screamed.
Richard smiled.
"James, don't be dramatic. Just take the evidence.""
I looked at Holloway.
"You're going to shoot him?""
Holloway's expression remained cold.
"Move away, Noah.""
Arthur slowly raised the recorder.
"There's more than one copy.""
Holloway hesitated.
Richard turned sharply.
"What did you say?""
Arthur pressed a button.
A woman's voice filled the room.
Sarah.
"If Richard is listening to this, then I didn't survive the night.""
The recording continued.
"Arthur, if you have the courage to tell the truth, take Noah somewhere safe. Don't let Daniel or Richard use him to get the inheritance.""
Daniel covered his face.
Then came another voice.
Richard's.
"Give me the key, Sarah.""
A crash.
A frightened gasp.
And then Sarah whispered:
"Michael knows. He has the original adoption papers.""
The recording ended.
Richard's face had turned white.
Holloway raised his gun.
"Drop it!""
Before he could fire, Rebecca Mills rushed into the room with two uniformed officers.
"Police! Put the weapon down!""
Holloway spun toward the door.
One officer tackled him.
The gun hit the floor.
Richard tried to run, but the second officer caught him near the window.
For the first time, Richard Vale looked frightened.
He struggled as they handcuffed him.
"You have no idea who you're arresting!""
Rebecca held up a warrant.
"We know exactly who you are.""
Richard looked at me.
"This is your fault.""
I stepped closer.
"No. This is what happens when people stop being afraid of you.""
The officers led him away.
Daniel remained in the bed, crying.
I looked at him.
"Where is Michael?""
He swallowed.
"At the old warehouse.""
"Alive?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Noah, I'm sorry. Michael died that night. I saw him.""
I stared at him.
"Then why did you send me that photograph?""
Daniel looked toward Richard's empty chair.
"Because Richard wanted you to believe Michael had survived. He knew you would come running. He wanted the blue key.""
I felt something inside me break.
The photograph had been real.
The hope had been manufactured.
I turned away.
But before I reached the door, Daniel spoke again.
"There's one thing you should know.""
I stopped.
"Your mother didn't leave the evidence in the chapel.""
He pointed toward the blue key.
"She left it somewhere Richard would never think to look.""
"Where?""
May you like
Daniel's eyes filled.
"In the place where you were born.""
