Chapter 9: The Truck That Never Existed

Arthur didn't deny owning the vehicle.

That was the first thing that frightened me.

He simply stood beside the diner table, staring at Detective Holloway's name on Evelyn's phone.

"Tell him I'll be there," Arthur said.

I grabbed his arm.

"You're not going anywhere alone.""

He looked at me.

"Son—"

"Don't call me that until you tell me the truth.""

His face crumpled.

Evelyn ended the call.

Marcus immediately stood.

"We need a lawyer.""

Arthur nodded.

"Agreed.""

I looked between them.

"Why does everyone keep saying lawyer? If the truck belongs to Arthur, shouldn't we just go to the police and explain?""

Evelyn picked up the documents.

"Because Detective Holloway was the officer who handled your father's accident.""

I frowned.

"He was retired.""

"That doesn't mean he can't be involved.""

Marcus pulled out his phone.

"I know someone. A former prosecutor. Her name is Rebecca Mills.""

Arthur nodded.

"Call her.""

I stared at Arthur.

"You're acting like you expected this.""

He looked at me.

"I've expected it for ten years.""

The words chilled me.

"Why?""

Arthur sat down.

"Because the truck wasn't supposed to exist.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

He looked toward the window.

Outside, the parking lot was nearly empty. Rain had started falling, tapping against the glass.

"After Michael died, the police said his truck had gone off the road near Miller Creek. They recovered a damaged vehicle and identified it as his.""

"Yes.""

"But the truck they recovered wasn't his.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What are you talking about?""

Arthur rubbed his hands together.

"Michael drove an old blue Ford. The police recovered a dark green pickup.""

I looked at Marcus.

He nodded slowly.

"He's telling the truth.""

I turned back toward Arthur.

"Then why did the police say it was Dad's?""

"Because the registration documents were inside.""

"Could someone have switched the plates?""

"Yes.""

I looked at the documents again.

"Then why is the truck registered to you?""

Arthur took a breath.

"Because I bought it two weeks before Michael died.""

I stared.

"Why?""

"Richard asked me to.""

My stomach dropped.

"What?""

Arthur looked at me.

"He said he needed a vehicle for company business. He asked me to purchase it under my name because his own accounts were being investigated.""

I shook my head.

"And you agreed?""

"Yes.""

"Did you know what he planned to do with it?""

"No.""

Marcus interrupted.

"Arthur didn't know Richard was going to use the truck.""

Evelyn looked at him sharply.

"How can you be certain?""

Marcus lowered his eyes.

"Because I was the one who delivered it.""

I turned toward him.

"You delivered the truck?""

He nodded.

"Richard told me to leave it near the warehouse. He said it was going to be used for transporting equipment.""

"What happened after that?""

"I never saw it again.""

Arthur leaned forward.

"Marcus, you never told me that.""

Marcus looked at him.

"Because you never asked.""

The tension between them became unbearable.

I stepped away from the table.

"So the truck that killed my father belonged to Arthur, but Richard was using it?""

Arthur nodded.

"That's what I believe.""

"Then why didn't you tell the police?""

"Because Richard told me the truck had been destroyed.""

"How?""

"He said it was burned after the accident.""

I looked at Evelyn.

"Was it?""

She shook her head.

"Apparently not.""

My phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A woman spoke.

"Mr. Bennett? This is Rebecca Mills. Marcus gave me your number.""

"Yes.""

"I understand Detective Holloway has contacted your family.""

"Yes.""

"Do not go to the station until I've spoken with you.""

I looked at Arthur.

"Why?""

"Because I just received a call from a source inside the police department. The vehicle they found was not recovered today.""

My stomach tightened.

"When was it found?""

"Three weeks ago.""

I looked at Evelyn.

"Then why are they contacting us now?""

Rebecca paused.

"Because the vehicle was discovered in a private storage facility owned by Richard Vale.""

Nobody spoke.

Rebecca continued.

"There's another problem. The truck's original identification number has been removed.""

I felt my hands go cold.

"Can they still identify it?""

"They believe they can. There was a second number stamped beneath the driver's seat.""

I swallowed.

"What does it say?""

Rebecca took a breath.

"According to the preliminary report, the truck was registered to Arthur Carter.""

Arthur closed his eyes.

Rebecca continued.

"But the most important discovery was inside the glove compartment.""

"What?""

"A photograph.""

I looked at Arthur.

"What photograph?""

"An old family picture. Michael Bennett, Sarah Bennett, and you as a baby.""

I felt tears sting my eyes.

"Why would that be there?""

Rebecca hesitated.

"Because someone wrote something on the back.""

"What?""

Her voice became quieter.

*Arthur Carter was driving.*

The room went silent.

I stared at Arthur.

He looked as though he might collapse.

"Is that true?"" I whispered.

Arthur shook his head.

"Noah, I wasn't driving.""

"Then who was?""

He looked at Marcus.

Marcus immediately stood.

"Don't look at me.""

Arthur's voice cracked.

"You were supposed to be with Richard that night.""

Marcus's expression changed.

"Arthur, don't.""

I looked between them.

"What happened?""

Marcus shook his head.

"I left before the accident.""

"Where did you go?""

"Home.""

"Can anyone confirm that?""

He hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

I stepped closer.

"Marcus, were you driving the truck?""

"No.""

"Then who was?""

Marcus looked at Arthur.

Arthur looked at the floor.

Finally, Marcus spoke.

"Richard.""

I felt my heart pounding.

"Are you sure?""

Marcus nodded.

"I saw him take the keys.""

"Why?""

"Because Michael had refused to hand over the documents. Richard wanted to scare him.""

I stared.

"Scare him?""

Marcus looked away.

"That's what Richard told me.""

Arthur suddenly slammed his fist against the table.

"Stop protecting him!""

Marcus turned.

"You think I haven't regretted this every single day?""

"Then why didn't you tell the police?""

"Because I had a family! Richard threatened my wife and my children!""

I froze.

Marcus lowered his voice.

"He showed me photographs of my kids leaving school. He told me he knew where they lived. He said if I ever mentioned the truck, none of us would be safe.""

I looked at him.

"Did Richard kill my father?""

Marcus began crying.

"I don't know what happened after he drove away.""

Arthur looked at me.

"I arrived at the scene after the crash. Michael was still alive.""

My throat tightened.

"You said you were there before the ambulance.""

"I was.""

"What did Dad say?""

Arthur closed his eyes.

"He asked me to take care of you.""

I felt tears running down my face.

"Did he say anything else?""

Arthur nodded.

"He said, 'Don't let him raise my son.''"

"Who?""

Arthur looked at me.

"Richard.""

I swallowed.

"Then why did you let Richard stay involved in my life?""

Arthur's voice broke.

"Because he threatened to have me arrested for the money. He said he would make sure you ended up in foster care. I believed him.""

My anger was suddenly tangled with something else.

Grief.

The kind that comes when you realize someone you love has been carrying a terrible mistake for years.

But there was still one question.

"Did Dad die before the ambulance arrived?""

Arthur looked at me.

"No.""

I froze.

"What?""

"He was alive when I reached him.""

I stepped forward.

"Then why did he die?""

Arthur's hands began shaking.

"Because someone had already removed the emergency medical kit from the truck. And when I called for help, Richard had blocked the road.""

I felt sick.

"Did you see him?""

Arthur nodded.

"He was standing beside the driver's door.""

I stared at him.

"Why didn't you stop him?""

Arthur's eyes filled.

"I tried.""

He pulled back his sleeve.

A long, pale scar ran along his forearm.

"Richard hit me with a metal bar. Then he told me that if I went to the police, he would make sure you disappeared.""

I looked at the scar.

For the first time, I understood that Arthur hadn't simply hidden a secret.

He had been afraid.

But fear didn't erase what he had done.

My phone rang again.

Rebecca.

I answered.

"Yes?""

Her voice was urgent.

"Noah, I need you to listen carefully. We just received the original evidence report from the storage facility.""

"What does it say?""

"There's blood on the passenger-side seat.""

I looked at Marcus.

Then at Arthur.

Rebecca continued.

"The lab has matched it to Michael Bennett.""

My knees weakened.

"Why is that important?""

"Because the passenger seat was occupied when the vehicle was recovered.""

I couldn't speak.

Rebecca took a breath.

"And the second blood sample belongs to someone who was never mentioned in the original investigation.""

"Who?""

She hesitated.

Then she said:

"Your mother, Sarah Bennett.""

I stared at the phone.

That was impossible.

My mother had supposedly died six months before my father.

Yet her blood was inside the truck involved in his accident.

I looked at Evelyn.

She had gone completely pale.

"Rebecca," I whispered, "are you sure?""

"Yes. And there's something else.""

"What?""

"The storage facility has security footage.""

I felt my heartbeat pounding in my ears.

"What does it show?""

Rebecca's voice dropped.

"Someone moved the truck three weeks ago.""

"Who?""

"We have a clear image of the driver.""

She paused.

Then she said:

"Noah, the person driving your father's truck was Arthur Carter.""

I turned toward Arthur.

He was already reaching for the door.

And before I could stop him, he ran into the rain.

Evelyn screamed his name.

Marcus chased after him.

I stood frozen for one terrible second.

Then I looked down at my phone.

A final message had arrived from the unknown number.

*Your father wasn't the only person who survived that night.*

Beneath it was a photograph.

A hospital bed.

A man lying beneath a white blanket.

His face was older, thinner, and covered in scars.

But I recognized him.

It was my biological father.

Michael Bennett.

May you like

And beneath the photograph were five words:

*Your father is still alive.*
