Chapter 12: The Name Under the Mask

Nobody spoke after Marcus’s words.

Darius stood near the counter.

Still.

Too still.

Bear looked at him.

“Darius.””

Darius slowly raised his eyes.

“Yeah?””

Bear’s voice was quiet.

“Why did you say you didn’t do it?””

Darius didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

The room shifted.

The men who had fought together for years suddenly looked like strangers.

Darius shook his head.

“You really think I betrayed him?””

Bear didn’t move.

“I think you know something.””

Darius looked at Elias.

“You came back and ruined everything.””

Elias frowned.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

Darius stepped forward.

“You think disappearing protected us?””

Elias stared.

“I was trying to.””

“No.””

Darius’s voice cracked.

“You abandoned us.””

The anger sounded real.

That was what made it dangerous.

Because the strongest lies were built from pieces of truth.

Bear stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Darius looked at him.

“Do you want the truth?””

Bear nodded.

“Yes.””

Darius looked at the memory card.

Then at Nia.

Then at Elias.

“The person who betrayed Elias wasn’t trying to destroy the club.””

Elias watched him.

“Then what?””

Darius swallowed.

“They were trying to save it.””

Bear froze.

The same words from the video.

The same impossible explanation.

“Who?””

Darius looked toward the window.

Marcus was gone.

Only the rain remained.

Darius whispered:

“Your father.””

The room stopped.

Bear stared.

“My father is dead.””

Darius nodded.

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

Darius looked at Elias.

“He wasn’t the person moving the money.””

Elias said nothing.

“He was the person who discovered it.””

Bear’s face changed.

Darius continued.

“Your father found out someone was using the club.””

“Who?””

Darius hesitated.

Then looked at the vest.

“The person who created the system.””

Bear felt his stomach drop.

“Who created it?””

Darius reached into his jacket.

Pulled out a small envelope.

“I was supposed to give this to you years ago.””

Bear took it.

Inside was a photograph.

Three people.

His father.

Elias.

And another man.

Bear stared.

Because the third person was someone he knew.

Someone still alive.

Someone who had been standing beside him tonight.

He slowly looked up.

Darius.

“No.””

Darius shook his head.

“I didn’t know.””

Bear’s voice was cold.

“You’re in the picture.””

Darius looked down.

“I was younger.””

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Darius looked at Elias.

“Because Elias asked me to watch him.””

Bear turned.

“What?””

Elias closed his eyes.

“I knew I couldn’t trust everyone.””

Bear’s voice rose.

“So you trusted Darius?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did he take the card?””

Darius answered.

“Because Marcus was close.””

Bear looked at him.

“You worked with Marcus?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

Darius looked toward Nia.

“Because Marcus wasn’t trying to steal the evidence.””

A pause.

“He was trying to force us to find it.””

Everyone froze.

Nia whispered:

“Why?””

Darius looked at the hidden drive.

“Because the evidence isn’t the only thing inside.””

Elias stepped forward.

“What?””

Darius looked at Bear.

“There’s another message.””

Bear stared.

“From who?””

Darius’s voice dropped.

“From the person who betrayed Elias.””

The lights suddenly went out.

Again.

The diner disappeared into darkness.

Then a phone rang.

Not Nia’s.

Not Bear’s.

A new phone.

On the counter.

The screen lit up.

One name appeared.

*BEAR.*

Nobody touched it.

Nobody moved.

Then the call answered itself.

A voice came through the speaker.

A voice Bear had not heard in twenty years.

His father.

“Son…”

Bear stopped breathing.

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

The entire diner froze.

And then the voice said:

“The man who betrayed your brother…”

May you like

A pause.

“…is the man standing closest to you.””
