Chapter 5: The Secret Beneath the Patch
Nobody moved.
The voice from the kitchen wasn’t loud.
It didn’t need to be.
The person who spoke already knew they had everyone’s attention.
Bear turned first.
Slowly.
The kitchen doorway was empty.
Only darkness.
Only the sound of a refrigerator humming.
Darius tightened his fists.
“Darius: Show yourself.””
Nothing.
Then a phone on the counter started ringing.
Everyone looked at it.
It wasn’t Nia’s phone.
It wasn’t Bear’s.
Nobody recognized it.
The ringing continued.
Bear walked toward it.
Nia grabbed his arm.
“Don’t.””
Bear looked at her.
“Why?””
Her face was full of fear.
“Because that’s how he does things.””
“Who?””
She swallowed.
“The man who helped me.””
Bear looked at the phone.
The screen showed one word.
*UNKNOWN*
He answered.
Silence.
Then breathing.
Slow.
Steady.
A voice finally spoke.
“Man on phone: You’re still protecting strangers, Bear.””
The entire room froze.
Bear’s grip tightened around the phone.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“Man on phone: You know who.””
Bear looked down.
The old vest.
The key.
The photograph.
Everything connected to a person nobody had mentioned yet.
Nobody except Marcus.
“Bear: Where is he?””
The voice didn’t answer.
Instead, it asked:
“Man on phone: Did she tell you why she was running?””
Bear looked at Nia.
She looked away.
That was enough.
“Bear: Nia.””
She closed her eyes.
“I was there.””
The words came out barely above a whisper.
Everyone looked at her.
“I was there the night he disappeared.””
Bear went still.
The biker club president who had faced years of danger looked completely shaken.
“What night?””
Nia wiped her face.
“The night your brother vanished.””
Nobody breathed.
Darius looked at Bear.
“You never said you had a brother.””
Bear didn’t respond.
Because he didn’t know what to say.
His brother had been gone for years.
Not dead.
Not alive.
Just gone.
A missing piece nobody could find.
And now a frightened waitress was standing in front of him holding the first clue in years.
Nia stepped closer.
“He saved me.””
Bear looked at her.
“From Marcus?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””
Her eyes dropped.
“Because he told me if I talked, Marcus would find me.””
The voice on the phone interrupted.
“Man on phone: She’s leaving out the important part.””
Bear raised the phone.
“What part?””
The voice became colder.
“The part where your brother knew Marcus before that night.””
The words hit like a punch.
Bear looked toward the window.
Marcus was still there.
Still watching.
Still holding the vest.
But now he wasn’t smiling.
Bear stepped closer to the glass.
“You knew him.””
Marcus didn’t deny it.
“Marcus: Better than you did.””
Darius moved beside Bear.
“What is he talking about?””
Marcus looked at the vest in his hands.
“He was my friend.””
Nia shook her head.
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You still believe that?””
Her voice trembled.
“He hated what you became.””
Marcus’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But Bear saw it.
Pain.
Real pain.
Then it disappeared.
Marcus turned away from the glass.
“He made a choice.””
Bear opened the door slightly.
Not enough for Marcus to enter.
Enough to speak.
“What choice?””
Marcus looked back.
“The same choice you’re about to make.””
Bear stared.
“Which is?””
Marcus walked toward the sedan.
“Choosing her over the truth.””
He opened the car door.
Bear stepped forward.
“Marcus.””
Marcus stopped.
For a moment, the parking lot was silent.
Then Marcus pulled something from inside the vehicle.
Not the vest.
Something smaller.
Something old.
He held it up.
A metal necklace.
Bear recognized it instantly.
His brother wore one exactly like it.
His voice dropped.
“Where did you get that?””
Marcus looked at Nia.
Then back at Bear.
“He gave it to me the night he disappeared.””
Bear’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re lying.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at the necklace.
“He wanted you to know the truth.””
Bear moved closer.
“What truth?””
Marcus closed his hand around the necklace.
“The truth that your brother wasn’t taken.””
A pause.
“He ran.””
The words cut through the night.
Behind Bear, Nia started crying.
Because she knew Marcus wasn’t finished.
Marcus stepped back toward the sedan.
“He ran because of what he found.””
Bear stared.
“What did he find?””
Marcus opened the car door.

And before he got inside, he said:
“Ask your club why they buried his last message.””
