Chapter 14: The Last Patch
The man standing in the doorway looked older.
Not weak.
Not broken.
Just tired.
Like he had spent years carrying something too heavy.
Rain dripped from his coat.
Nobody moved.
Because everyone recognized the patch on his vest.
The same one Marcus had shown.
The same one Elias had worn.
The same one Bear had spent his entire life protecting.
But there was one difference.
The man wearing it should have been dead.
Elias whispered:
“No.””
The man looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
Bear turned toward Elias.
“You know him?””
Elias couldn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Bear already knew.
This was the missing piece.
The person everyone had been chasing.
The person hidden behind every secret.
The man stepped forward.
“My name is Calvin.””
Darius went pale.
Bear looked at him.
“Calvin?””
Darius nodded slowly.
“He was one of the founders.””
The room went silent.
Calvin looked at Bear.
“Your father trusted me.””
Bear’s jaw tightened.
“And then?””
Calvin looked down.
“And then I failed him.””
Nobody spoke.
Calvin walked toward the counter.
His eyes moved to the hidden drive.
“You found it.””
Bear stepped in front of it.
“You’re not taking anything.””
Calvin stopped.
A sad smile appeared.
“You have your father’s eyes.””
Bear didn’t react.
“My father trusted you.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did Elias disappear?””
Calvin looked at Elias.
“I asked him to.””
Bear turned.
“What?””
Elias looked away.
Calvin continued.
“Because someone was hunting him.””
“Who?””
Calvin’s expression hardened.
“The person who created the betrayal.””
Bear waited.
Calvin looked around the room.
“At first, we thought it was about money.””
He touched the vest.
“It wasn’t.””
He looked at Nia.
“It was about control.””
Nia stepped back.
Calvin continued.
“The club had information. Names. People who needed protection.””
Bear nodded.
“We know.””
“No.””
Calvin’s voice became serious.
“You know the surface.””
He looked at the drive.
“You don’t know what was inside.””
Bear stared.
“What was inside?””
Calvin answered:
“A list.””
“A list of everyone the club protected.””
Silence.
“And everyone who wanted them gone.””
Marcus entered the doorway behind him.
Everyone turned.
Calvin looked at him.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Marcus laughed.
“You disappeared for twenty years and you’re telling me where I belong?””
Bear looked between them.
“You know each other.””
Marcus nodded.
“Very well.””
Calvin looked at him.
“You were supposed to leave this alone.””
Marcus’s face hardened.
“I tried.””
Elias stepped forward.
“Then why come after Nia?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Because she had the key.””
Nia frowned.
“What key?””
Marcus looked at the small metal key on the counter.
“The one that opens the final compartment.””
Everyone looked.
Bear picked it up.
“The vest has another compartment?””
Calvin nodded.
“Yes.””
Bear stared.
“What’s inside?””
Calvin looked at Elias.
Then at Marcus.
Then finally at Bear.
“The name.””
Bear frowned.
“Whose name?””
Calvin’s expression became heavy.
“The person who ordered your brother’s disappearance.””
The room went silent.
Bear inserted the key into the hidden seam inside the vest.
A small compartment opened.
Inside was a folded piece of paper.
And one photograph.
Bear unfolded the paper.
His face changed.
Because the handwriting was familiar.
His father’s.
The message was short.
*The person who betrayed us is not outside the club.*
A second line.
*They are the reason the club exists.*
Bear looked at the photograph.
His hands started shaking.
It showed the original founders.
His father.
Calvin.
Elias.
And one more person.
A person standing beside them.
A person Bear had trusted his entire life.
The diner door closed behind him.
Everyone turned.
May you like
Because the final person in the photograph…
was standing inside the diner.
