The Vest Behind the Glass / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9: The Brother’s Final Proof

The search lasted less than a minute.

But it felt like an hour.

“Darius!””

Bear’s voice shook the diner.

No answer.

The front door swung slightly in the wind.

Rain blew across the floor.

Someone had escaped.

Bear ran outside.

The parking lot was empty.

Only tire marks leading away.

Elias followed him.

“No.””

Bear turned.

“What?””

Elias looked at the tire tracks.

“That wasn’t Marcus.””

Bear stared.

“How do you know?””

“Because Marcus wants you watching him.””

Elias pointed toward the road.

“This was someone else.””

Bear looked back at the diner.

At the people inside.

At the empty chair where Darius had been standing.

His stomach tightened.

“He was with us.””

Elias nodded.

“I know.””

The words hurt more than anything else.

Because they meant Elias had suspected it.

Bear grabbed his brother’s jacket.

“You knew?””

Elias looked away.

“I suspected.””

“You suspected my best friend?””

“I suspected everyone.””

Bear released him.

“That’s why you left?””

Elias’s eyes became heavy.

“That’s why I survived.””

The answer stopped him.

Inside the diner, Nia sat quietly.

She looked exhausted.

Like she had been carrying the weight of the night alone.

Bear walked back inside.

“What do we know?””

Elias closed the door.

“We know Marcus has the vest.””

“We know someone inside the club helped him.””

“We know Darius took the memory card.””

Bear looked at him.

“And we know nothing.””

Elias shook his head.

“No.””

He looked toward the counter.

“We know one more thing.””

Bear waited.

“Darius wasn’t the person who betrayed me.””

Everyone froze.

Bear frowned.

“How do you know?””

Elias looked toward the window.

“Because he saved my life.””

The room went silent.

Nia looked confused.

“Then why take the card?””

Elias didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know.

Then Bear noticed something.

On the floor near the broken window.

A piece of paper.

He picked it up.

The handwriting was familiar.

Darius.

Bear read it.

His face changed.

“What?””

Bear handed it to Elias.

The note said:

*I FOUND THE REAL FILE. DON’T TRUST ANYONE UNTIL I RETURN.*

Elias stared.

“That changes everything.””

Bear looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because Darius wasn’t running.””

“Then what was he doing?””

Elias looked toward the road.

“Buying us time.””

The diner fell silent.

Then Nia’s phone vibrated.

Everyone looked.

She checked the screen.

A new message.

From Marcus.

She opened it.

Her hands started shaking.

Bear saw her face.

“What did he say?””

She turned the phone around.

One sentence.

*YOUR BROTHER NEVER TOLD YOU WHAT WAS UNDER THE PATCH.*

Bear stared.

Elias went pale.

For the first time since returning, fear appeared on his face.

Bear noticed.

“What is under the patch?””

Elias didn’t answer.

Bear stepped closer.

“Elias.””

His brother looked at him.

And whispered:

“The reason I disappeared.””

A long silence followed.

Then Elias reached for the old vest.

His fingers touched the patch.

“There’s something hidden inside.””

Bear stared.

“Inside the vest?””

Elias nodded.

“Something Marcus has been trying to find for years.””

The front door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

Darius stood there.

Breathing heavily.

Blood on his jacket.

And in his hand…

the missing memory card.

He looked at Bear.

“Good.””

Everyone froze.

Darius held up the card.

“Because now you’re finally ready to see what your club was built on.””

Then he looked at Elias.

“And why you should have stayed gone.””
