Chapter 7: The Brother Who Left a Warning

The phone screen went dark.

Nobody moved.

For several seconds, the only sound inside the diner was the rain hitting the windows and the faint buzz of the broken neon sign outside.

Then Darius spoke.

“Darius: Play it again.””

Bear didn’t answer.

He was still staring at the black screen.

The words were burned into his mind.

*The person who betrayed me is someone you call family.*

Not someone he knew.

Not someone he trusted.

Family.

Bear slowly placed the phone on the counter.

“No.””

Darius looked at him.

“No?””

Bear shook his head.

“Again means we listen to fear. We don’t know what that video means.””

Nia stood near the booth, watching him.

“But you believe it.””

Bear looked at her.

His silence answered.

She lowered her eyes.

“I knew something was wrong that night.””

Everyone turned toward her.

Bear’s voice softened.

“What night?””

“The night Elias disappeared.””

The diner became quiet again.

Nia held her arms around herself.

“I didn’t tell anyone because I thought if I stayed quiet, Marcus would leave me alone.””

Darius frowned.

“You knew Marcus before tonight.””

Nia nodded.

“He was there.””

Bear stepped closer.

“Where?””

She looked toward the broken window.

“Behind the warehouse.””

Nobody spoke.

Bear’s expression tightened.

“Which warehouse?””

Nia swallowed.

“The one where Elias found the records.””

That word changed everything.

Records.

Darius looked at Bear.

“What records?””

Bear didn’t know.

Or maybe he did.

And he didn’t want to say it.

Nia noticed.

“You know something.””

Bear looked away.

“Nia.””

“No.””

Her voice was stronger.

“You keep asking me for the truth, but you’re hiding yours.””

The bikers looked between them.

For years, Bear had been the person with answers.

Now he was the person holding the door shut.

Nia stepped closer.

“What did Elias find?””

Bear remained silent.

Then he finally spoke.

“Before Elias disappeared, he told me he thought someone was stealing from the club.””

Darius’s face changed.

“Stealing?””

Bear nodded.

“Money. Equipment. Information.””

“From us?””

“Yes.””

The room felt colder.

Darius shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

Bear looked at him.

“Is it?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone had just watched a video from a missing man telling them exactly that.

Nia sat down slowly.

“Elias wasn’t looking for money.””

Bear looked at her.

“What was he looking for?””

She hesitated.

“Proof.””

The word hung in the air.

“Proof of what?””

“That Marcus wasn’t working alone.””

A sudden noise came from outside.

Everyone turned.

A shadow moved past the diner window.

Bear immediately stepped forward.

“Stay here.””

He moved toward the door.

Darius followed.

“Bear, you’re not going alone.””

Bear opened the door carefully.

The parking lot was empty.

Only rain.

Only the dark road.

Then he saw something attached to the front handle of the diner.

A small envelope.

Bear picked it up.

No name.

No symbol.

Just a single sentence written across the front.

*YOU’RE LOOKING AT THE WRONG FAMILY.*

Darius looked over his shoulder.

“Who left it?””

Bear didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

Marcus.

Inside the envelope was a memory card.

Darius stared.

“You think it’s another trap?””

“Yes.””

“Then why open it?””

Bear looked back at the diner.

At Nia.

At the bikers.

At the broken window.

“Because if Marcus wanted us scared, he wouldn’t keep giving us answers.””

They returned inside.

Bear connected the memory card to the diner’s old computer.

The screen flickered.

One video file appeared.

No title.

No date.

Just one word.

*BROTHER.*

Bear clicked it.

The screen showed Elias.

But this time, he wasn’t alone.

Someone was sitting beside him.

Someone whose face was hidden.

Elias looked exhausted.

“Elias on video: If Bear found this, then I’m already gone.””

Bear’s jaw tightened.

The hidden person beside Elias moved slightly.

A hand appeared.

A familiar ring.

Darius froze.

“No.””

Bear looked at him.

“What?””

Darius stepped back.

“That ring…”

The video continued.

“Elias on video: I need you to understand something. The person who betrayed me isn’t the person you think.””

The hidden figure leaned closer.

Elias looked nervous.

“Elias on video: He didn’t destroy the club.””

A pause.

“He saved it.””

The video glitched.

Then the hidden person spoke.

A voice.

A voice everyone recognized.

“Stop the video.””

The room froze.

Because the voice was coming from the computer.

But nobody had touched it.

The screen went black.

And behind them, someone whispered:

“Bear.””

May you like

Everyone turned.

A man stood in the diner doorway.
