Chapter 10: The Son My Mother Chose
I read the message again.
*Your mother raised the wrong son.*
The photograph showed my mother standing outside our house with a young man.
He had his arm around her shoulders.
His face looked almost exactly like mine.
Except for one detail.
A small scar above his right eyebrow.
I had seen that scar before.
On the man in the original photograph from the hospital.
The third baby.
I looked at my father.
"Who is he?""
Robert's eyes filled with tears.
"His name is Ethan.""
"Who is he?""
"Your biological brother.""
I shook my head.
"No. Michael is my brother.""
"Michael is my son with Vanessa. Ethan is the child Evelyn gave birth to.""
I felt the room spinning.
"So you're telling me I have two brothers?""
Robert nodded.
"Three sons were involved in that hospital incident. Michael is mine. Ethan is yours in the biological sense of being Evelyn's child. And you...""
He stopped.
I stepped closer.
"Finish the sentence.""
"You were born to another woman.""
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
My entire childhood flashed before me.
My mother's hands tying my school shoes.
Her voice reading bedtime stories.
Her standing outside my college dormitory with a homemade birthday cake.
Her sleeping in a hospital chair when I had pneumonia at sixteen.
None of those memories changed.
But the meaning of my birth had just been ripped away.
"Who was my biological mother?""
Robert looked toward the window.
"Her name was Margaret.""
I swallowed.
"Where is she?""
"Dead.""
The word came quietly.
"She died shortly after giving birth.""
I looked down.
"And my father?""
Robert hesitated.
"Marcus, I need you to understand something. The hospital records were deliberately altered. Margaret was connected to Richard's family. She worked as a financial administrator for Whitmore Technologies.""
Richard interrupted.
"She stole company documents.""
Robert turned sharply.
"She discovered your financial crimes.""
"She was a thief.""
"She was trying to expose you.""
I looked between them.
"Why was I given to Evelyn?""
Robert's expression softened.
"Because Margaret trusted her.""
"How?""
"Margaret and Evelyn had become friends while working at the hospital. Evelyn was there because she was helping your mother during her pregnancy.""
I frowned.
"My mother?""
"Your biological mother. Margaret.""
Robert corrected himself.
"She had no family willing to care for you. Before she died, she asked Evelyn to protect you.""
I felt something break inside me.
"So Evelyn knew?""
Robert nodded.
"She knew you weren't biologically hers. But she loved you as her own.""
"Did she know Ethan was hers?""
"Yes.""
"Then why did she raise me instead?""
Robert looked down.
"Because the hospital gave her two choices. Take the baby she had been told was hers, or lose the child she had promised Margaret to protect.""
I shook my head.
"That makes no sense.""
"Richard had arranged for the babies to be moved. When Evelyn discovered the records had been falsified, she knew she couldn't fight him openly.""
Michael stepped forward.
"So she took Marcus?""
Robert nodded.
"And Ethan was moved to another facility.""
I stared at him.
"Where?""
"An orphanage outside Boston. Later, he was adopted.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Then how did Mom find him?""
Robert's voice broke.
"She never stopped looking.""
Richard laughed.
"Touching. But irrelevant.""
I turned toward him.
"Shut your mouth.""
He raised his pistol slightly.
"Careful, Marcus.""
Daniel suddenly stepped between us.
"Richard, put it down.""
Richard glared.
"You've already betrayed me enough.""
Daniel looked at the gun.
"I know.""
Then he reached into his jacket and removed his phone.
"The police have everything.""
Richard froze.
"What?""
Daniel held up the screen.
"The recording. The documents. The original hospital report. I sent copies to the authorities before we arrived.""
Richard's face twisted.
"You fool.""
"Maybe.""
Daniel swallowed.
"But I'm finished helping you.""
Richard pointed the gun at him.
Before he could move, Robert struck his wrist with his cane.
The gun hit the floor.
Michael lunged forward and kicked it away.
Vanessa screamed.
Daniel grabbed Richard's arms and forced him against the table.
For the first time, the billionaire looked helpless.
Then I heard my mother's voice.
"Marcus!""
Everyone turned.
Evelyn stood in the doorway.
Her uniform was still stained with red wine.
Her hair had come loose, and she was holding a thick envelope against her chest.
Behind her stood the young man from the photograph.
Ethan.
My mother's eyes found mine.
She began crying.
"Sweetheart.""
I couldn't move.
She approached slowly.
"I wanted to tell you.""
I stared at her.
"How long have you known?""
"Since the day you were born.""
The answer hurt more than I expected.
"Thirty-four years?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
"And you never told me?""
"I was afraid you would think I loved you less.""
I looked at her.
"Did you?""
She immediately shook her head.
"Never.""
Her voice broke.
"Marcus, I didn't give birth to you. But I held you when you were sick. I stayed awake when you had nightmares. I worked until my hands bled so you could have a future.""
She took another step.
"I chose you every single day.""
My eyes filled.
Then Ethan spoke.
"She chose me too.""
I turned toward him.
He looked at me with a mixture of anger and sadness.
"She found me six months ago. She told me everything. She didn't ask me for anything. She just wanted to know whether I was alive.""
I looked at my mother.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I wanted to make sure he was safe before bringing him into your life.""
Ethan lowered his eyes.
"She came to my apartment every Sunday. Sometimes she brought food. Sometimes she just sat with me.""
His voice trembled.
"She told me about you. About your college graduation. Your company. Your engagement.""
He looked at Vanessa.
"And then she told me the woman you were going to marry had been involved in what happened to us.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Mom, why did you go to the house tonight?""
Evelyn opened the envelope.
"Because I finally found the original hospital records.""
She handed them to me.
The first page contained three birth registrations.
The second showed the names of the attending physicians.
The third contained a handwritten statement.
I read it slowly.
*The infant identified as Patient C was transferred under the authority of Dr. Samuel Whitmore.*
I looked up.
"Samuel Whitmore?""
Richard's father.
Evelyn nodded.
"Your father's original business partner. The man who controlled the hospital board.""
I turned the page.
There was another statement.
This one had been signed by a nurse.
And beneath the signature was a final sentence.
*One infant was deliberately exchanged to conceal the identity of the child whose birth threatened the Whitmore inheritance.*
I looked at my mother.
"Which child?""
She wiped her cheeks.
"The one who was supposed to inherit everything.""
I turned toward Ethan.
He stared at the paper.
Then he said something that made the entire room go silent.
"Marcus, I think I know why they switched us.""
May you like
He pointed to the final page.
"Because one of us was never supposed to be born.""
