Chapter 6: The Brother Who Wanted My Life

I didn't sleep that night.

At 5:40 a.m., I was still sitting at the kitchen table, staring at the photograph of my father.

My mother had gone to bed, but I could hear her moving around upstairs.

Every few minutes, a floorboard creaked.

I knew she wasn't sleeping either.

At 6:15, I received an email from an unfamiliar address.

The subject line read:

*You Have One Brother. You Have One Chance.*

There was a single photograph attached.

I opened it.

A man stood outside a modern office building, wearing a dark suit. He had short black hair, a square jaw, and a small scar near his right eyebrow.

He looked almost exactly like me.

Except his eyes were different.

The photograph had been taken recently.

Beneath it was a message.

Marcus,

My name is Michael Carter.

I know what happened at the restaurant.

I also know what our mother told you.

Don't let her tell you that she saved you.

She chose you.

I read the message twice.

Then I forwarded it to my mother.

Within seconds, my phone rang.

"Marcus?""

Her voice was shaking.

"I received an email from Michael.""

Silence.

Then she whispered:

"Don't meet him.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Mom, Richard invited me to meet him.""

"Richard invited you because he wants to watch you suffer.""

"And Michael?""

"He wants something.""

"What?""

My mother didn't answer.

I looked at the photograph again.

"He's my brother.""

"Blood doesn't always make someone safe.""

I was beginning to understand how deeply fear had shaped her life.

But I couldn't keep living inside it.

"I'm going.""

She began crying.

"Then take the brass key.""

I looked toward the counter.

"Why?""

"Your father left something in that storage unit. Something Richard doesn't know exists.""

I picked up the key.

"What?""

My mother took a long breath.

"The original company agreement.""

I stared at her.

"Why is that important?""

"Because it names the person who was supposed to inherit everything.""

"Michael?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

I waited.

Then she said:

"Both of you.""

At 9:30, I drove to the Whitmore estate.

The property stood behind enormous iron gates on the outskirts of Boston. Tall trees lined the driveway, and security cameras followed my car as I approached.

A guard checked my identification.

Then the gates opened.

The mansion was enormous.

White stone columns framed the entrance. A fountain stood in the center of the circular driveway, and several expensive cars were parked near the front steps.

Daniel was waiting outside.

He wore a navy suit and held a cup of coffee.

"Marcus.""

I ignored his offered hand.

"Where's my brother?""

Daniel smiled.

"Inside.""

He led me through the entrance.

The first thing I noticed was a large family portrait hanging above the staircase.

Richard stood in the center.

Vanessa was beside him.

And between them stood Michael.

My brother.

The resemblance was almost frightening.

Michael was speaking with a woman near the fireplace when he noticed me.

He stopped.

For several seconds, we simply stared at each other.

Then he walked toward me.

"Marcus.""

"Michael.""

He looked me up and down.

"So this is what you look like.""

I gave a humorless smile.

"Apparently.""

He offered his hand.

I shook it.

His grip was firm.

"Have you ever looked in a mirror and wondered what your life would have been like if you had a brother?"" he asked.

"Not until yesterday.""

He laughed.

"Well, I've wondered every day.""

Vanessa stood near the staircase.

She looked exhausted.

Her makeup was slightly smudged, and her hair was tied back loosely.

When our eyes met, she looked away.

Richard entered the room.

"Now that everyone is here, we can begin.""

He gestured toward a long dining table.

Several documents were already arranged in front of each chair.

Michael sat across from me.

Vanessa sat beside Richard.

Daniel remained standing.

Richard began.

"Marcus, as you know, your company has been negotiating the acquisition of Whitmore Technologies. There is one complication.""

I looked at him.

"Ownership.""

"Exactly.""

He slid a document toward me.

"Your father established a private trust before his death. The trust owns the controlling shares of Whitmore Technologies.""

"And the beneficiaries are Michael and me?""

"Correct.""

I looked at Michael.

He didn't seem surprised.

Richard continued.

"However, Michael has agreed to transfer his portion of the trust to Vanessa.""

I turned sharply.

"What?""

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

Michael leaned back.

"She has managed the family assets for years. She understands the company.""

I looked at him.

"Why would you give her your inheritance?""

He shrugged.

"Because I don't want to spend my life arguing with people who abandoned me.""

I felt the accusation.

"Nobody abandoned you.""

He laughed.

"Really? Then where were you?""

I leaned forward.

"I was eleven years old when Dad died.""

"And I was a baby when you got to grow up with Mom.""

I froze.

Michael's eyes were full of anger.

"Do you know what it's like to grow up in a house where nobody calls you their son unless there are cameras around?""

Richard interrupted.

"Michael.""

"No," Michael said.

"Let him hear it.""

He turned toward me.

"I spent my childhood being told that my mother had chosen another child over me.""

I glanced at Vanessa.

She was staring at the table.

"Who told you that?""

"Richard.""

I looked at the billionaire.

Richard didn't deny it.

Instead, he folded his hands.

"Evelyn signed the agreement. I simply honored it.""

I stood.

"My mother was manipulated.""

Michael laughed bitterly.

"That's convenient.""

I turned toward him.

"Have you ever spoken to her?""

"Once.""

"When?""

"Three weeks ago.""

I stared.

"She contacted you?""

He nodded.

"She told me she wanted to explain everything.""

"What happened?""

Michael's expression changed.

"She asked me to forgive her.""

My throat tightened.

"And?""

"I asked her one question.""

He leaned forward.

"Why did she take you and leave me?""

I had no answer.

Then Michael said something that made my blood run cold.

"She told me she didn't know which baby she was taking.""

I looked toward the staircase.

My mother had never said that.

Michael continued.

"Apparently, Dad had arranged for both of us to be moved. But someone switched the identification bracelets.""

I slowly turned toward Richard.

He was watching me.

"Who switched them?""

Richard smiled.

"That's a question for the hospital.""

Vanessa suddenly stood.

"Enough.""

Everyone looked at her.

She reached into her handbag and removed a document.

"There's something else Marcus needs to know.""

Richard's expression hardened.

"Vanessa, sit down.""

She ignored him.

She placed the paper in front of me.

It was a copy of a birth registration.

Two names.

Two babies.

And two different fathers.

I stared at the document.

One child was registered as Marcus Robert Carter.

The other as Michael Richard Whitmore.

My hands began to shake.

"Why does Michael have Richard's surname?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Because Richard legally adopted him.""

Michael stood abruptly.

"What are you doing?""

Vanessa turned toward him.

"Showing him the truth.""

Richard slammed his hand against the table.

"Put that document away.""

But Vanessa didn't move.

Instead, she looked directly at me.

"Marcus, there is something you need to understand about the night your father died.""

I held the document tighter.

"What?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Your father wasn't trying to save one baby.""

She paused.

"He was trying to save both of you from Richard.""

Richard stepped toward her.

"That's enough.""

Vanessa backed away.

"No. I've kept quiet for ten years.""

Daniel moved toward the door.

Michael looked between them.

And I realized that everyone in the room knew something I didn't.

Vanessa reached into her handbag again.

This time, she removed a small silver USB drive.

"Your father left a recording," she whispered.

Richard's face went white.

I stared at the device.

"Where did you get that?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"From the one person Richard never managed to silence.""

"Who?""

She turned toward the mansion's entrance.

The front door opened.

An elderly man walked inside, leaning heavily on a wooden cane.

His hair was completely white.

His face was thin, and he moved slowly.

But I recognized him immediately.

I had seen his photograph hundreds of times.

My father.

Robert Carter.

Alive.

My mother had spent thirty-four years telling me he died.

May you like

And now the man standing in front of me looked straight into my eyes and said:

"Marcus, forgive me. I was never supposed to let you grow up believing I was dead.""
