Chapter 9: The Third Baby in the Hospital Records
The room fell into a silence so complete that even Richard seemed to forget about the gun.
I looked at my father.
"You're telling me there was a third baby?""
Robert nodded.
"Yes.""
"Then who is Michael?""
"My biological son with Vanessa.""
"And me?""
"You are Evelyn's and my biological son.""
I looked toward Richard.
"Then who was the third baby?""
Richard smiled.
"That's the question your father has spent thirty-four years trying to answer.""
Michael stepped forward.
"Stop playing games. Tell us.""
Richard lowered the gun.
"Your father had a habit of believing he could control everything. The hospital, the company, the people around him.""
Robert's expression hardened.
"You arranged the switch.""
Richard shrugged.
"I arranged a solution.""
"A solution?"" I repeated.
Richard looked at me.
"Three children were born that night. Two belonged to people connected to the company. One belonged to a woman who had no money and no influence.""
He paused.
"One child disappeared from the hospital records. Another was sent to a private facility. And the third was raised by the woman who believed she had given birth to him.""
I looked at my father.
"Which child disappeared?""
Robert's voice dropped.
"The third baby.""
My mother had told me about twins.
Richard was telling us there had been three babies.
I couldn't make sense of it.
Vanessa finally spoke.
"Richard, tell them what you did.""
He turned toward her.
"Stay out of this.""
"No.""
Her hands were trembling.
"You told me the third baby had died.""
Richard looked at her coldly.
"Because that was what needed to happen.""
Michael turned toward Vanessa.
"What baby?""
She closed her eyes.
"The third child was mine.""
The words struck like a hammer.
Michael backed away.
"What?""
Vanessa wiped her face.
"I was seventeen. I gave birth to two babies. Not one.""
Richard stepped forward.
"Vanessa.""
She ignored him.
"I was told one of them died. I was allowed to hold Michael for a few minutes before he was taken away. They told me the other baby hadn't survived.""
Michael stared at her.
"Then what happened to the second one?""
Vanessa began sobbing.
"I don't know.""
Robert placed the old medical report on the table.
"Because the second baby wasn't recorded under Vanessa's name.""
I looked at the document.
Three identification numbers were listed.
A.
B.
C.
Only two names appeared.
Marcus Carter.
Michael Whitmore.
The third line had been blacked out.
I felt a strange sensation in my chest.
"Why would someone hide a third birth?""
My father looked at Richard.
"Because the third baby was the only one who could expose the entire arrangement.""
Richard laughed.
"That's nonsense.""
Robert shook his head.
"No. The third baby was born with a medical condition that required a specific genetic match. The hospital kept the original samples.""
I frowned.
"What condition?""
"An inherited blood disorder. It ran through your father's family.""
I glanced at Michael.
"Does he have it?""
"No.""
"Do I?""
My father shook his head.
"Neither of you.""
Richard smiled.
"Which is why the third child was never part of the inheritance.""
Robert's eyes narrowed.
"That's not true.""
He reached into his coat and removed another document.
It was a genetic report.
The date was recent.
I recognized the laboratory name.
It was the same company my business had used for employee wellness screening.
Robert placed it in front of me.
"Someone recently submitted a sample from the original hospital archive.""
I read the first line.
*Genetic comparison: Patient C and Robert Carter.*
Then the result.
*Probability of biological parentage: 99.99%.*
My stomach tightened.
"Who submitted this?""
Robert looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head.
"Not me.""
Daniel suddenly looked toward the door.
Richard noticed.
"Daniel?""
Daniel didn't answer.
Richard pointed the gun toward him.
"Did you do this?""
Daniel slowly raised his hands.
"I didn't know what the sample would show.""
"Who did you send it to?""
Daniel swallowed.
"An independent laboratory.""
Richard took a step toward him.
"Why?""
"Because I was tired of watching you destroy people.""
Richard's face darkened.
"You stupid little man.""
Daniel looked at me.
"The results were sent to someone this morning.""
"Who?""
He hesitated.
Then said:
"Evelyn Carter.""
My blood turned cold.
My mother.
I pulled out my phone and called her.
No answer.
I called again.
Nothing.
Then a message appeared.
*Marcus, don't come home. I've found the original records. Someone is outside the house.*
I looked at my father.
"We need to leave.""
Richard raised the gun.
"Nobody is leaving.""
Robert stepped forward.
"Richard, it's finished.""
Richard laughed.
"You still don't understand. If the third child is alive, everything changes.""
I looked at the genetic report.
"Who is the third child?""
Richard stared at me.
Then he said something I never expected.
"Your father knows.""
I turned toward Robert.
He looked devastated.
"Tell me.""
He shook his head.
"Marcus...""
"Tell me!""
Robert closed his eyes.
Then he whispered:
"The third child was the one I was supposed to raise.""
I stared at him.
"Where is that child now?""
Robert looked directly at me.
"He's the reason your mother has spent thirty-four years working as a waitress instead of living the life she deserved.""
I couldn't understand.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa suddenly grabbed my arm.
"Marcus, listen to me. Your mother didn't lose everything because of Richard.""
I turned toward her.
"Then why?""
Vanessa looked at Michael.
Then at my father.
"Because the third child was never missing.""
Daniel took a step forward.
"He was hidden in plain sight.""
Richard's face had gone completely white.
Robert slowly nodded.
"That's right.""
He looked at me with tears in his eyes.
"Marcus, the third child is someone you've known your entire life.""
My phone vibrated again.
A photograph appeared.
It showed my mother standing outside our house.
Beside her was a young man.
He had one hand on her shoulder.
And in his other hand, he was holding the original hospital records.
I enlarged the photograph.
The young man's face was familiar.
Too familiar.
Because I had seen him every morning in the mirror for thirty-four years.
The message beneath the photograph contained only six words:
*Your mother raised the wrong son.*
I looked up at my father.
He nodded slowly.
May you like
And then he said the words that shattered everything.
"Marcus, you aren't the child Evelyn gave birth to.""
