Chapter 7: The Father Who Came Back From the Dead
Nobody moved.
The elderly man stood in the doorway, leaning on his wooden cane. His white hair was neatly combed, and a deep scar ran from his temple toward his jaw.
But there was no mistaking those eyes.
I had seen them in photographs throughout my childhood.
I had inherited them.
My father.
Robert Carter.
Alive.
For several seconds, I couldn't even breathe.
Then I laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because my mind couldn't accept what my eyes were showing me.
"No.""
The man took one step forward.
"Marcus.""
I backed away.
"Don't.""
His expression crumpled.
"Son, please.""
"Don't call me that.""
My voice echoed through the dining room.
Richard Whitmore stood near the fireplace, completely motionless. Vanessa was holding the USB drive against her chest. Michael looked as though someone had pulled the floor from beneath him.
I pointed toward the man.
"My father died thirty-four years ago.""
Robert lowered his head.
"I know what you were told.""
"His funeral was real. His grave was real. I stood beside it.""
"I know.""
"My mother cried over him every night!""
His eyes filled with tears.
"I know, Marcus.""
I walked toward him.
"Then explain how you're standing here.""
Robert looked at Richard.
"Tell him.""
Richard straightened his jacket.
"Your father has always been remarkably talented at surviving situations that should have ended him.""
"Shut up," I snapped.
Richard smiled.
"Still emotional. Just like Robert.""
My father lifted one hand.
"Richard, don't.""
It was the first time I had heard his voice outside an old recording.
It sounded deeper than I remembered.
Older.
But familiar.
He looked at me again.
"Your mother believed I was dead. I made sure she believed it.""
I stared at him.
"You made her mourn you?""
He nodded.
"To keep her alive.""
I shook my head.
"That's your explanation?""
"Richard had people watching our house. After the fire, he believed I was dead. If Evelyn had known otherwise, she would have been questioned.
Followed. Perhaps killed.""
I looked toward Richard.
"Did you start the fire?""
Richard didn't answer.
My father stepped closer.
"Yes.""
The room went silent.
Robert continued.
"He set fire to the old Carter laboratory. I was inside when it started. I escaped through a maintenance tunnel, but Richard had already arranged for the authorities to identify the body of another man as mine.""
I felt sick.
"Whose body?""
My father looked down.
"An employee who had been helping me gather evidence.""
"Then why did you let my mother believe you were dead?""
"Because Richard had threatened to take both children. He had the money, the connections, and the legal documents to make it happen.""
Michael suddenly stood.
"Both children?""
Robert turned toward him.
"Michael.""
"Don't.""
Michael's face had gone red.
"You knew I was alive?""
My father nodded.
"I did.""
Michael laughed bitterly.
"And you visited Marcus? You watched him grow up? You knew where he went to school?""
Robert's eyes filled with tears.
"Yes.""
"Did you ever come to see me?""
"No.""
Michael's voice cracked.
"Why?""
My father looked at Richard.
"Because he was told that I had abandoned him. Richard made sure he believed I was dead or didn't want him.""
Michael slammed his palm against the table.
"You could have sent a letter!""
"I tried.""
"One letter? One phone call? Thirty-four years, and you couldn't find a way?""
My father lowered his head.
"I failed you.""
Michael turned away.
I understood his anger.
I felt it too.
But something about the entire situation was beginning to trouble me.
I looked at Richard.
"Why did you bring us here?""
Richard smiled.
"Because this family has unfinished business.""
My father shook his head.
"No. You brought them here because you need the trust.""
Richard's smile disappeared.
Vanessa stepped forward.
"He's right.""
Richard looked at her.
"Vanessa, don't make this worse.""
She held up the USB drive.
"Your father has spent years trying to recover this recording. He knows what is on it.""
Robert nodded.
"Everything.""
Richard took a step toward her.
"Give me that.""
Vanessa backed away.
"No.""
Daniel moved quickly, grabbing her wrist.
"Don't be stupid.""
She struggled.
"Let go!""
I rushed forward and pushed Daniel away.
"Touch her again and you'll regret it.""
Daniel adjusted his sleeve.
"You're making a serious mistake, Marcus.""
"Then explain what I'm missing.""
He glanced at Richard.
For the first time, Daniel looked frightened.
Robert pulled out a chair and sat down.
"Everyone needs to hear this.""
He looked at Michael.
"Especially you.""
Vanessa connected the USB drive to a laptop on the table.
A video appeared.
The image was grainy, but the date was visible.
October 14, 1992.
My birthday.
A younger version of my father appeared on the screen, sitting inside an office.
His face was bruised.
He looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this, it means Richard has finally discovered where the children are.""
My hands began to tremble.
The recording continued.
"One of my sons is in danger. The other has been placed under Richard's protection. I don't know which one he intends to keep, but I know why.""
My father paused.
Then he said something that made everyone stare.
"Neither child is the real heir to the company.""
Richard suddenly lunged toward the laptop.
Robert stood and blocked him.
"Don't!""
Vanessa stepped backward.
The video continued.
"The real inheritance belongs to the person who can prove what happened in the hospital that night.""
The screen went black.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Michael looked at our father.
"What does that mean?""
Robert closed his eyes.
"It means one of you has been living under a false identity.""
I looked at Michael.
Then at the document Vanessa had shown me.
"Which one?""
My father didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he reached into his coat and removed a folded medical report.
He placed it on the table.
"I have spent thirty-four years trying to find the original hospital records.""
I opened the report.
The first page contained two newborn identification numbers.
The second page contained a handwritten note.
*Patient A: Biological child of Evelyn Carter and Robert Carter.*
*Patient B: Biological child of Evelyn Carter and Richard Whitmore.*
I read the lines again.
Then I looked up.
Michael was staring at the report.
Richard's expression had become unreadable.
My father spoke quietly.
"Marcus, Michael isn't your twin.""
The room seemed to disappear.
"Then who is he?""
Robert looked at Richard.
And Richard finally smiled.
"Now we're getting somewhere.""
He turned toward Michael.
"Tell him who your real mother is.""
Michael looked confused.
"What?""
Richard's smile widened.
"Your real mother, son.""
May you like
Then he pointed toward Vanessa.
"She's standing right there.""
