Chapter 12: The Secret Hidden Inside the Family Bible
Claire Whitmore stood in the middle of the dining room.
She looked older than the woman in the photographs, but her eyes were unmistakable.
Richard stared at her.
"You're supposed to be in London.""
Claire gave a bitter laugh.
"I was supposed to be dead, too. Apparently, this family has a talent for pretending people don't exist.""
My father stepped forward.
"Claire.""
She looked at him.
"Robert.""
For several seconds, they simply stared at each other.
Then Claire turned toward Evelyn.
"I'm sorry.""
My mother looked confused.
"For what?""
"For everything Samuel did. For everything Richard continued doing after him.""
Richard laughed.
"Don't start pretending you're innocent.""
Claire opened her briefcase.
"I'm not innocent.""
She removed a thick leather book.
It was an old family Bible, its edges worn and its cover cracked.
I recognized it immediately.
It had belonged to my grandmother.
My mother had once told me it disappeared after my father's funeral.
Claire placed it on the table.
"Samuel hid the original inheritance document inside this.""
Richard stepped forward.
The detective blocked his path.
"Stay where you are.""
Claire opened the Bible.
Several pages had been carefully cut out.
Inside the hollowed space was a sealed envelope.
She removed it.
The front contained three names.
*Marcus Carter.*
*Michael Whitmore.*
*Ethan Carter.*
I stared at the envelope.
"Why are all three of us listed?""
Claire looked at me.
"Because Samuel discovered that Richard had been manipulating the company accounts. He knew the children would eventually become the only people capable of exposing the fraud.""
Richard shook his head.
"That's a lie.""
Claire ignored him.
She opened the envelope and removed a document.
It was signed by Samuel Whitmore.
The first section established that the original company shares would be held in trust until the three children reached adulthood.
The second section explained the conditions.
I read the final paragraph twice.
*The controlling shares shall be divided equally among the three biological children of Robert Carter, provided all three identities are verified through independent genetic evidence.*
I looked at my father.
"Three biological children?""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
I looked at Michael.
Then Ethan.
Then the document.
"But Michael is Richard's son.""
Claire shook her head.
"No.""
The room fell silent.
Michael stared at her.
"What?""
Claire took another document from the envelope.
A genetic report.
It compared Richard Whitmore's DNA with Michael's.
The result was unmistakable.
*Probability of biological parentage: 0%.*
Michael stared at the paper.
Then he looked at Richard.
"You're not my father?""
Richard's face remained expressionless.
Claire continued.
"Vanessa's biological father is Daniel Whitmore. Richard is her uncle.""
Vanessa gasped.
Daniel looked down.
Michael stepped backward.
"Wait. If Daniel is my biological father...""
Claire nodded.
"Yes. You are the son of Daniel and Vanessa.""
Nobody spoke.
Daniel looked as though he might collapse.
"Vanessa...""
She turned away.
"I was seventeen. Your uncle arranged everything. He told me the baby would be adopted into a safe family.""
Daniel covered his face.
"I didn't know.""
Richard suddenly laughed.
"Wonderful. Everyone has discovered their family tree. How touching.""
The detective tightened her grip on his arm.
Claire turned toward Richard.
"You knew the truth from the beginning.""
He said nothing.
"You knew Daniel was Michael's father. You knew Vanessa was his mother. You used them both to maintain control of the trust.""
Richard looked at her.
"You're forgetting something, Claire.""
She stiffened.
He smiled.
"You signed the original hospital transfer documents.""
My mother looked at Claire.
"Is that true?""
Claire lowered her eyes.
"Yes.""
I felt another wave of anger.
"Why?""
She took a long breath.
"Because Samuel threatened to expose my relationship with Robert. He said he would destroy my career and make sure I never saw my family again.""
Robert stepped forward.
"Claire, you didn't have to do what he asked.""
She looked at him.
"I was twenty-three years old. I was terrified.""
She turned toward Evelyn.
"I knew Margaret wanted you to raise Marcus. I knew the arrangement was legal. But Samuel changed the records. He made it look like you had given birth to him.""
My mother looked down.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I was afraid Richard would find out I had kept the original documents.""
Claire touched the Bible.
"I hid them here.""
I looked at the three names again.
"Then why did you say the third child was never supposed to survive?""
Claire's face changed.
"Because Samuel believed one of the children had died.""
"Which one?""
She looked at Ethan.
"Ethan.""
Ethan frowned.
"But I'm standing here.""
"Yes. Because the hospital records were wrong. Samuel was told that you had died during the transfer.""
I looked at my father.
"Then why was Ethan moved?""
Robert answered.
"Because Richard wanted to keep the inheritance under his control. He believed that if one child disappeared, the remaining shares would be easier to manipulate.""
Michael looked at the document.
"So all three of us inherit equally?""
Claire nodded.
"Once the identities are verified.""
I stared at the trust agreement.
Something wasn't right.
I read the final section again.
Then I noticed a handwritten addition at the bottom.
*The shares shall not transfer until the three beneficiaries unanimously approve the final ownership arrangement.*
I looked up.
"Unanimously?""
Claire nodded.
"All three must agree.""
Michael gave a bitter laugh.
"That's convenient.""
Ethan crossed his arms.
"Why?""
"Because none of us trusts each other.""
He was right.
Michael had spent his life believing I had stolen his family.
Ethan had grown up without knowing his biological mother.
And I had spent thirty-four years believing the woman who raised me had given birth to me.
We were strangers connected by documents and secrets.
The detective approached Richard.
"Mr. Whitmore, you're coming with us.""
Richard smiled.
"On what grounds?""
"Fraud, conspiracy, unlawful detention, and evidence tampering. Additional charges are being reviewed.""
He turned toward Daniel.
"You're making a mistake.""
Daniel looked at him.
"No. I made one thirty years ago.""
The officers led Richard toward the entrance.
Before he disappeared, he looked directly at me.
"Marcus, enjoy your little family reunion.""
I didn't respond.
He stopped at the doorway.
"Because the person who killed your biological mother is still walking around freely.""
My blood turned cold.
"What?""
Richard smiled.
Then he looked at my father.
"Tell him, Robert.""
The officers pulled him outside.
I turned toward my father.
"Did Richard kill Margaret?""
Robert's face became pale.
He looked at the photograph on the table.
Then at the family Bible.
Finally, he spoke.
"No.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Then who?""
He took a long breath.
"Margaret didn't die from natural causes.""
I looked toward Claire.
She was crying.
Robert continued.
"She was poisoned the night before the hospital transfer.""
I stared at him.
"Who did it?""
He looked at Vanessa.
She immediately shook her head.
"Not me.""
Robert shook his head too.
"No. Not Vanessa.""
Then he pointed toward the old family Bible.
"The person who signed the death certificate was Margaret's attending physician.""
Claire whispered:
"Dr. Samuel Whitmore.""
I frowned.
"Richard's father?""
Robert nodded.
"Yes.""
"But he's dead.""
Claire slowly opened the back cover of the Bible.
A small photograph had been tucked inside.
It showed Samuel standing outside a hospital.
Beside him was another man.
A younger version of Daniel.
And behind them stood a woman holding a newborn baby.
I leaned closer.
The woman was Margaret.
But the man holding the baby wasn't Samuel.
It was Daniel's father.
Claire turned the photograph over.
There was a handwritten message.
*The child was born before the marriage. The truth must never reach the Whitmore family.*
I looked at Daniel.
His face had turned completely white.
"What's wrong?"" I asked.
He stared at the photograph.
Then he whispered:
"That man isn't my father.""
He looked at my father.
"He's yours.""
Robert closed his eyes.
And suddenly, the entire room understood.
The final secret wasn't about the inheritance.
It was about the identity of the man who had started this entire chain of betrayals.
May you like
My father had another brother.
And that brother had been the one who ordered Margaret's death.
