Chapter 11: The Birth Certificate That Exposed Everything
Ethan took the document from my hands.
His fingers were trembling.
"Look at the doctor's signature.""
I leaned closer.
The name appeared beneath the statement.
*Dr. Samuel Whitmore.*
Richard's father.
Below it was a handwritten note.
*Patient C must remain unidentified until the inheritance dispute is resolved.*
I looked at Ethan.
"What does that mean?""
He turned the page.
"There are three separate birth records, but only two legal registrations. Someone deliberately removed the third child's identity.""
My father nodded.
"Samuel Whitmore knew Margaret was carrying twins. He also knew she had discovered financial records proving Richard had been stealing from the company.""
Richard laughed.
"Your father is rewriting history.""
Robert ignored him.
"Margaret was supposed to give birth to one child. The second baby was discovered during an emergency procedure.""
Vanessa stared at him.
"That isn't possible. I was told I had one baby.""
Robert shook his head.
"That's what they wanted you to believe.""
Ethan looked toward my mother.
"Which baby did you carry?""
Evelyn took a long breath.
"I carried Marcus. Margaret gave birth to the other two.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Then why did you say you gave birth to me?""
She looked at me sadly.
"Because the hospital made me sign documents stating that you were my biological son. I was told the other two babies had died.""
I looked at the medical records again.
"Where was Michael?""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"I was told he had been taken to a private adoption facility.""
Michael looked at her.
"And the other baby?""
She shook her head.
"I was never told there was another.""
Robert placed both hands on the table.
"Because Samuel arranged for the third child to be transferred under a different name.""
Richard suddenly laughed.
"Enough. You're all wasting time.""
I turned toward him.
"Why?""
He looked at me.
"Because the inheritance has nothing to do with this.""
Daniel shook his head.
"That's not what the documents say.""
Richard glared at him.
Daniel picked up a folder.
"Samuel created a separate trust for the third child. The person whose identity was deliberately hidden would inherit the original controlling shares if the hospital fraud was ever proven.""
I stared at the papers.
"Who is the third child?""
Daniel looked at Ethan.
"That's what the genetic report was supposed to establish.""
Ethan shook his head.
"I submitted my DNA because Evelyn asked me to. I thought I was only confirming that she was my mother.""
He turned toward me.
"But the laboratory compared my sample with the original medical records.""
I swallowed.
"And?""
Ethan looked down.
"The report says I'm genetically related to both Margaret and Robert.""
My father nodded.
"That's because Margaret and I had a relationship before she died.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
My mother closed her eyes.
Robert continued.
"Margaret and I were engaged before I met Evelyn. We separated after she discovered she was pregnant. I didn't know she was carrying twins.""
Richard smiled.
"Your father has always been very good at collecting complicated relationships.""
Robert ignored him.
"After Margaret died, I discovered the hospital had recorded one of her children under a false identity. I spent years searching.""
I looked at the documents.
"So Ethan is Margaret's son.""
"Yes.""
"And I'm Margaret's son too?""
Robert shook his head.
"No. You're Margaret's biological child through a different arrangement.""
I frowned.
"What arrangement?""
He looked at Evelyn.
Then at the document.
"Margaret had asked Evelyn to be a surrogate mother for her second child. The hospital knew about the arrangement, but Samuel changed the records to make it look like a natural birth.""
My mind struggled to catch up.
"So Evelyn gave birth to me, but I'm not biologically hers?""
"Correct.""
"And Ethan was born to Margaret?""
"Yes.""
"Then how are we related?""
Robert looked directly at me.
"You're half-brothers. Margaret is your biological mother, and I'm your biological father. Ethan is also your biological child with Margaret.""
I stared at him.
"That's impossible.""
He shook his head.
"No. The original report confirms it.""
I felt as though I was drowning in information.
Then Michael spoke.
"Where do I fit into this?""
Vanessa looked at him.
"You're my son. Richard's biological son.""
Michael turned toward Richard.
"Then why did you make me believe I was Robert's?""
Richard shrugged.
"Because I needed the trust to remain disputed.""
Michael's face twisted.
"You used me.""
"I raised you.""
"You lied to me.""
Richard stepped closer.
"I gave you everything.""
Michael's voice rose.
"You gave me a name that wasn't mine, a family that wasn't mine, and a childhood built on lies!""
Richard slapped the table.
"Enough!""
Nobody moved.
Then Evelyn spoke.
"There is one more thing.""
She removed a small photograph from the envelope.
It showed Margaret standing outside the hospital.
Beside her was a young woman holding a baby.
The young woman was Evelyn.
I stared.
"Mom?""
She nodded.
"That was the day I promised Margaret I would protect you.""
She pointed to the baby in Evelyn's arms.
"You.""
Then she pointed to the baby in Margaret's arms.
"Ethan.""
I looked at the photograph.
There was something else.
A third baby carrier stood beside them.
But the photograph had been cut along the edge.
Someone had deliberately removed the face of the person holding it.
I turned the picture over.
On the back was a handwritten note.
*The third child is the only one who knows where the original inheritance document is hidden.*
My father went pale.
"That's impossible.""
I looked at him.
"Why?""
He took the photograph from my hand.
"Because the third child was never supposed to survive.""
Richard suddenly stood.
"That's enough!""
He reached for the folder.
Daniel grabbed it first.
"Don't touch it.""
Richard pushed him.
Daniel stumbled backward.
The sound of sirens suddenly filled the air.
Blue lights flashed through the mansion windows.
Richard looked toward the entrance.
His face changed.
"Daniel, what have you done?""
Daniel straightened his jacket.
"What I should have done thirty years ago.""
Two uniformed officers entered the room.
Behind them stood a woman in a dark suit carrying a warrant.
"Richard Whitmore?""
Richard said nothing.
"I'm Detective Harris. We have a warrant for your arrest.""
Richard looked around the room.
Then he smiled.
"You don't have enough evidence.""
The detective held up a sealed envelope.
"Actually, we have the original hospital records, the financial documents, and a recorded confession.""
Richard's eyes narrowed.
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded slightly.
The police began reading Richard his rights.
But before they could handcuff him, he turned toward me.
"Marcus, you still don't understand.""
I stared at him.
"What now?""
He smiled.
"The third child is already inside this house.""
I felt my blood turn cold.
Then I heard a voice from behind the staircase.
"He's right.""
Everyone turned.
A young woman stepped into the room.
She was holding a leather briefcase.
And when she looked at me, I recognized the small scar above her left eyebrow.
The same scar from the hospital photograph.
She looked at Richard.
Then at my father.
"My name is Claire Whitmore.""
May you like
She placed the briefcase on the table.
"And I have the document that proves which child was supposed to inherit everything.""
