The Wall That Hid My Father / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11: The Person Behind The Disappearance

The door opened slowly.

Nobody moved.

The mansion held its breath.

Then a man stepped inside.

Older.

Tall.

Completely calm.

He wore a dark suit and carried no weapon.

That should have made him less frightening.

It didn’t.

Because everyone in the hallway reacted the same way.

Fear.

Arthur looked like he had seen a ghost.

Diane looked like she had been waiting for this nightmare to return.

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“Marcus: You shouldn’t be here.””

The man smiled slightly.

“Man: Neither should Arthur.””

I stared.

“Claire: Who are you?””

The man looked at me.

And for a second, I saw recognition.

Not curiosity.

Recognition.

“Man: Claire.””

I hated hearing strangers say my name.

“Claire: Answer me.””

He adjusted his jacket.

“My name is Victor.””

The name meant nothing.

But Arthur’s reaction did.

His face became pale.

“Arthur: Victor Hale.””

Victor smiled.

“Victor: You remember.””

I looked at Arthur.

“Claire: Who is he?””

Arthur didn’t answer.

Victor did.

“Victor: I was your father’s business partner.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Marcus: Don’t make yourself sound innocent.””

Victor looked at him.

“Victor: Still angry after all these years?””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“Marcus: You ruined everything.””

I stepped between the voices.

“Claire: Enough.””

Everyone stopped.

I looked at Victor.

“Claire: My father was trapped behind a wall.””

Victor looked toward the broken panel.

“Victor: So I see.””

“Claire: Did you do it?””

A long silence followed.

Then Victor smiled.

Not a happy smile.

A tired one.

“Victor: Your father always believed the world was simple.””

Arthur stared.

“Arthur: You’re lying.””

Victor ignored him.

“Victor: Good people. Bad people. Heroes and villains.””

He looked at me.

“Victor: But the truth is usually uglier.””

I hated that answer.

Because it sounded like everyone else.

Half-truths.

Careful words.

“Claire: Did you trap him?””

Victor looked at Arthur.

Then back at me.

“Victor: No.””

Everyone went still.

Arthur looked shocked.

“Arthur: You expect her to believe that?””

Victor sighed.

“Victor: I expect her to ask the right questions.””

My anger rose.

“Claire: I’m asking.””

Victor nodded.

“Victor: Then ask why Arthur disappeared.””

I turned toward my father.

Arthur looked away.

Again.

That hurt.

“Claire: Dad?””

Victor spoke softly.

“Victor: Your father found something that put all of us at risk.””

Marcus interrupted.

“Marcus: Stop pretending you cared.””

Victor looked at him.

“Victor: I cared enough to keep her alive.””

He pointed toward Noah.

The entire room went silent.

I stepped back.

“Claire: What does that mean?””

Victor looked at Noah.

“Victor: Your son is the final piece.””

My chest tightened.

“Claire: Final piece of what?””

Victor looked around the mansion.

“Victor: A record your mother created before she died.””

Diane whispered:

“Diane: No.””

Victor turned toward her.

“Victor: You knew she was smarter than all of us.””

Diane looked away.

I stared at her.

“Claire: You knew?””

She looked broken.

“Diane: I knew she was hiding something.””

“Claire: And you never told me?””

Diane shook her head.

“Diane: I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed quietly.

“Claire: That sentence should be illegal in this family.””

Nobody smiled.

Victor stepped closer.

“Victor: Claire, your mother didn’t trust anyone.””

“Claire: Not even my father?””

Victor looked at Arthur.

“Victor: Especially not him.””

The words hit hard.

Arthur looked devastated.

“Claire: Why?””

Victor reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Another one.

Like the letter.

Like another piece of a life I never knew.

“Victor: Because she knew Arthur would choose protecting you over telling the truth.””

Arthur stared at the envelope.

“Arthur: Where did you get that?””

Victor smiled.

“Victor: She gave it to me.””

Everyone froze.

“Claire: My mother gave you something?””

Victor nodded.

“Victor: The night she died.””

My hands began shaking.

“Claire: You were there?””

Victor didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

I saw it in his eyes.

He was.

A terrible thought entered my mind.

“Claire: Did you hurt her?””

For the first time, Victor’s expression changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

“Victor: No.””

He looked at Arthur.

“Victor: But your father knows who did.””

I turned.

Arthur looked like he couldn’t breathe.

“Claire: Dad?””

He whispered:

“Arthur: I tried to stop them.””

“Claire: Who?””

Arthur looked at Victor.

Then Diane.

Then me.

“Arthur: Someone inside this family.””

The hallway became silent.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Noah dropped his blanket.

Everyone looked down.

A small piece of paper had fallen from inside it.

I picked it up.

My hands froze.

Because it wasn’t old.

It wasn’t hidden for decades.

Someone had placed it there recently.

And written on it were six words.

*“Ask your father about the hospital.””*

May you like

I looked at Arthur.

His face lost all color.
