Chapter 6: The Letter My Father Never Sent
The voice from the doorway belonged to a woman.
I couldn’t see her face yet.
Only her silhouette beneath the bright hallway lights.
But Arthur reacted immediately.
His entire body went rigid.
“Arthur: No.””
One word.
One reaction.
Enough to tell me this person mattered.
Marcus stepped slightly in front of me.
“Claire: Who is that?””
Nobody answered.
The woman walked into the hallway.
She was Black, older, dressed elegantly, with silver jewelry and a calm expression.
She looked around the mansion.
Then at Arthur.
“Woman: You look worse than I expected.””
Arthur’s hands tightened.
“Arthur: You shouldn’t be here.””
She smiled faintly.
“Woman: Neither should you.””
Diane whispered:
“Diane: Evelyn.””
The woman looked at her.
“Evelyn: Still afraid of me, Diane?””
My eyes moved between them.
Another person.
Another secret.
Another name I had never heard.
I felt like my entire family was a locked room, and every answer opened another door.
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
“Marcus: You followed me.””
Evelyn smiled.
“Evelyn: You were always easy to track.””
Arthur looked at Marcus.
“Arthur: You brought her here?””
Marcus shook his head.
“Marcus: No.””
That was the first time Marcus looked afraid.
Evelyn slowly walked toward the center of the hallway.
Her eyes landed on the letter in my hand.
“Evelyn: So she finally got it.””
I held the envelope tighter.
“Claire: You know what this is?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“Yes.””
The answer was too calm.
“Claire: What is it?””
She glanced at Arthur.
“Evelyn: The last thing your father wanted you to read.””
Arthur stepped forward.
“Arthur: Claire, don’t.””
I looked at him.
“Claire: Why?””
He looked broken.
“Arthur: Because once you know, you can’t go back.””
I stared at the envelope.
Then at my father.
Then at Diane.
I had spent my entire life wanting the truth.
Now everyone was warning me away from it.
That made me want it even more.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
My father’s.
My hands trembled as I read the first line.
*Claire, if you are reading this, it means Diane failed to keep you safe.*
I looked up.
Diane closed her eyes.
“Claire: What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
I continued reading.
*I need you to know one thing before anything else. I never left you.*
My vision blurred.
The words I had waited decades to hear were finally on paper.
But underneath them was something else.
Something darker.
*The person who trapped me was not my enemy. It was someone I trusted.*
I stopped.
Slowly, I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
“Claire: Who?””
Arthur looked away.
Diane started crying silently.
Evelyn said nothing.
Marcus clenched his jaw.
I looked back at the letter.
The next line waited.
*And the worst part is…*
The sentence ended there.
The rest of the page was torn away.
I flipped the paper over.
Nothing.
A missing piece.
A missing truth.
“Claire: Where is the rest?””
No one answered.
Then Arthur whispered:
“Arthur: Someone took it.””
I looked at him.
“Claire: Who?””
Before he could respond, Evelyn stepped closer.
“Evelyn: The same person who made sure your father disappeared.””
The mansion fell silent.
I looked at every face around me.
Diane.
Arthur.
Marcus.
Evelyn.
Four people connected by a secret I never knew existed.
And then Noah suddenly started crying.
Not a normal cry.
A frightened cry.
I looked down.
He was staring past me.
Toward the broken wall.
I turned slowly.
Something was inside the dark opening.
Something I hadn’t noticed before.
A small metal box hidden beneath the fallen wood.
Arthur saw it.
His face changed instantly.
“Arthur: No…”
I stepped toward it.
“Claire: What is that?””
Arthur’s voice shook.
“Arthur: Claire, don’t open it.””
I looked at the box.
Then at my father.
Then at the people who had spent my entire life hiding the truth.
And I knew.
Whatever was inside that box was the reason my family had spent thirty years lying.

I reached down.
And opened the lid.
