The Wall That Hid My Father / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5: The Secret Buried Under My Childhood

The second set of footsteps changed everything.

Marcus didn’t look surprised.

That scared me more than anything.

He already knew.

Diane moved toward the center of the hallway, her body tense.

“Claire: Who else is here?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Marcus: You know exactly who.””

Diane’s face hardened.

“Diane: Don’t do this.””

“Marcus: I’m tired of protecting your lies.””

The front door remained open behind him.

Cold air moved through the mansion.

I held Noah closer.

“Claire: Everyone keeps talking around me.””

My voice cracked.

“Claire: I’m done being the last person to know my own life.””

Nobody spoke.

So I stepped forward.

“Claire: My father was alive.””

I looked at Arthur.

“Claire: He was hidden.””

Then at Diane.

“Claire: You knew.””

Then Marcus.

“Claire: And now you’re here saying he was running.””

I took a breath.

“Claire: Tell me what happened.””

Marcus stared at Arthur.

“Marcus: Ask him.””

Arthur looked exhausted.

“Arthur: Claire…”

“Claire: No.””

The word came out sharper than I expected.

“Claire: I waited my whole childhood for answers.””

My eyes burned.

“Claire: I waited at the window because I thought you left me.””

Arthur looked like every word hurt.

“Claire: I believed I wasn’t enough for you to stay.””

He lowered his head.

“Arthur: You were always enough.””

“Claire: Then why did you disappear?””

The question hung between us.

Finally, Arthur answered.

“Arthur: Because I was trying to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“Claire: Everyone says that.””

I pointed around the hallway.

“Claire: Everyone says they were protecting me.””

A tear escaped before I could stop it.

“Claire: But nobody ever asked what it did to me.””

The room became silent.

Even Marcus looked away.

Arthur slowly pushed himself up.

“Arthur: Your mother died because of something I discovered.””

I froze.

My mother.

A name rarely spoken in this house.

“Claire: What did you discover?””

Arthur looked toward the broken wall.

“Arthur: A financial operation.””

Marcus interrupted.

“Marcus: That’s not the whole story.””

Arthur glared at him.

“Arthur: You don’t get to tell her.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Marcus: Someone has to.””

I looked between them.

“Claire: What operation?””

Arthur hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“Claire: Dad.””

He closed his eyes.

“Arthur: I found evidence that someone close to our family was stealing from people.””

Diane looked uncomfortable.

“Claire: Who?””

Nobody answered.

My heart began pounding.

“Claire: Who?””

Marcus finally spoke.

“Marcus: Your father suspected me.””

Arthur looked at him.

“Arthur: Because the evidence pointed to you.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Marcus: And I spent years trying to prove I was innocent.””

I stared.

“Claire: So my father hid because he thought Marcus was dangerous?””

Arthur nodded.

“Arthur: Yes.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Marcus: But your father made one mistake.””

“Claire: What mistake?””

Marcus looked at Diane.

And Diane immediately looked away.

“Marcus: He trusted the wrong person.””

The air disappeared from my lungs.

I turned slowly toward Diane.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Diane: Claire…”

“No.””

My voice became quieter.

“Claire: You’re saying Diane betrayed him?””

Diane’s eyes filled with tears.

“Diane: It wasn’t that simple.””

Arthur laughed weakly.

A painful laugh.

“Arthur: It was exactly that simple.””

Diane looked at him.

“Diane: You don’t understand what I had to do.””

Arthur’s expression changed.

“Arthur: I was your husband.””

The word shocked me.

I looked at Diane.

My entire life, she had been the woman who raised me.

But I had never heard her called his wife.

Marcus watched me process it.

“Marcus: Claire, there’s something else.””

I looked at him.

“Claire: What?””

He reached into his coat.

He pulled out an old envelope.

The paper was yellowed with age.

My name was written across the front.

Not printed.

Written.

My hands started shaking.

“Claire: That’s mine.””

Marcus nodded.

“Marcus: Your father wrote it before he disappeared.””

Arthur looked alarmed.

“Arthur: Where did you get that?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Instead, he held it out.

“Marcus: She never wanted you to read it.””

I looked at Diane.

She went completely still.

“Claire: Is that true?””

Diane whispered:

“Diane: Claire…”

“Claire: Is it true?””

Her silence was the answer.

I took the envelope.

My fingers touched the paper.

Three decades of secrets.

Three decades of lies.

Everything I had been searching for was inside.

I slowly opened it.

But before I could read the first line, the mansion lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone froze.

Arthur looked toward the entrance.

Marcus turned around.

Diane whispered:

“Diane: They’re here.””

A shadow appeared outside the doorway.

Then a voice spoke.

A voice that made Arthur’s face lose all color.

“Voice: Arthur.””

May you like

A pause.

“Voice: You should have stayed hidden.””
