The Wall That Hid My Father / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7: The Box Beneath The Wall

The metal box was heavier than it looked.

My fingers wrapped around the cold edges as I lifted it from the broken wooden panel. Dust covered the surface, but beneath the dirt I could see scratches carved into the metal.

Not random scratches.

Letters.

My name.

*CLAIRE.*

My breathing stopped.

For a moment, the entire hallway disappeared.

The chandelier above us.

The broken wall.

The people watching me.

All I could see was my name carved into something that had been hidden for decades.

Noah shifted in my arms.

I held him tighter.

“Claire: My father made this?””

Nobody answered.

That silence was becoming the loudest thing in the mansion.

I looked at Arthur.

“Claire: Did you hide this here?””

Arthur looked terrified.

“Arthur: No.””

“Claire: Then how does it have my name on it?””

His face tightened.

“Arthur: Because I wanted to protect something that belonged to you.””

I stared at him.

“Claire: Protect it from who?””

Arthur looked toward Diane.

That one glance changed everything.

I turned slowly.

“Claire: Diane?””

Diane’s lips parted.

For the first time, she looked like she wanted to run.

“Diane: Claire, please.””

“Claire: Please what?””

My voice echoed through the hallway.

“Claire: Please don’t open the box? Please don’t find out what happened? Please keep living inside the lie you built?””

Diane wiped a tear from her cheek.

“Diane: You think I wanted any of this?””

“Claire: I don’t know what to think anymore.””

That was the truth.

I didn’t know who deserved my anger.

Arthur, because he disappeared.

Diane, because she lied.

Marcus, because he brought danger into my home.

Evelyn, because she appeared with answers nobody wanted to give.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had an excuse.

But I was the one who had spent my whole life carrying the consequences.

I opened the box.

Inside was a small collection of items wrapped in a faded blue cloth.

The first thing I saw was a photograph.

My hands shook as I lifted it.

It was my father.

A younger version of him.

Standing beside my mother.

And beside them was Diane.

But they weren’t smiling like a normal family.

They looked worried.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

A date from two days before my father disappeared.

I looked at Arthur.

“Claire: You were all together.””

Arthur said nothing.

“Claire: You told me you left because you had no choice.””

His eyes lowered.

“Arthur: I did.””

“Claire: Then why were you with Diane and my mother right before it happened?””

Nobody spoke.

I reached into the box again.

This time I pulled out a small key.

Then a folded document.

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“Marcus: Don’t.””

I looked at him.

“Claire: Why?””

His expression changed.

“Marcus: Because that document is what started everything.””

I unfolded it.

The paper was old.

The ink was faded.

But the words were clear.

A legal agreement.

A transfer of ownership.

A signature at the bottom.

Diane’s.

My stomach tightened.

“Claire: Diane.””

She looked away.

“Claire: What is this?””

Diane whispered:

“Diane: A mistake.””

I laughed softly.

“Claire: Everyone keeps calling secrets mistakes.””

I held the document up.

“Claire: What did you sign?””

Diane looked at Arthur.

Arthur looked devastated.

“Arthur: She signed over control.””

“Claire: Control of what?””

Arthur didn’t answer.

Marcus did.

“Marcus: Your father’s company.””

I froze.

My father had never been wealthy.

That was the story I grew up hearing.

A hardworking man.

A simple life.

A father who disappeared.

But now I was learning every memory had been edited.

“Claire: My father owned a company?””

Arthur closed his eyes.

“Arthur: Yes.””

“Claire: And Diane took it?””

Diane’s voice broke.

“Diane: No.””

“Claire: Then explain.””

She looked at me.

“Diane: I was trying to keep it away from the wrong people.””

“Claire: By taking it?””

Diane had no answer.

The silence was interrupted by Evelyn.

“Evelyn: She always did know how to make herself look like the victim.””

Everyone looked at her.

Diane’s expression changed.

“Diane: You don’t get to judge me.””

Evelyn smiled coldly.

“Evelyn: After what you did?””

The tension in the room became unbearable.

I looked back at Arthur.

“Claire: Tell me the truth.””

Arthur took a long breath.

“Arthur: The company wasn’t the real secret.””

“Claire: Then what was?””

He looked at Noah.

My son.

And suddenly I understood.

The fear.

The warnings.

The way everyone looked at him.

“Claire: Why are you looking at my son?””

Arthur’s face filled with regret.

“Arthur: Because the person who wanted me gone…”

He stopped.

“Claire: Who?””

Arthur swallowed.

“Arthur: They weren’t afraid of me.””

A chill moved through me.

“They were afraid of what I knew about you.””

I stared.

“Claire: About me?””

Before Arthur could explain, the mansion lights shut off.

Darkness swallowed the hallway.

Noah screamed.

I grabbed him immediately.

Someone moved in the darkness.

A quick step.

A breath.

Then a voice whispered near the entrance.

“Unknown Voice: Claire…”

My body froze.

The voice was close.

Too close.

“Unknown Voice: You should never have opened that box.””

The lights came back.

Everyone was still standing where they were.

Everyone except the person who had spoken.

May you like

Because whoever it was…

Was already inside the mansion.
