The Wall That Hid My Father / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13: The File That Was Never Destroyed

The mansion was no longer a home.

It was a battlefield.

Every person standing in the hallway knew it.

The secrets that had survived thirty years were finally breaking apart, and the people who had spent their lives protecting those secrets were running out of places to hide.

I stood there holding Noah while Victor stared at his phone.

“The original file.””

Those words kept repeating in my mind.

Not a copy.

Not a rumor.

Not another missing letter.

The original file.

The truth about me.

“Claire: Where is it?””

Victor looked at me.

“Victor: In the hospital archives.””

Marcus immediately shook his head.

“Marcus: That’s impossible.””

Victor looked at him.

“Victor: Why?””

“Marcus: Because those records were sealed.””

Victor’s expression darkened.

“Victor: Exactly.””

I looked between them.

“Claire: What does that mean?””

Arthur answered quietly.

“Arthur: It means someone powerful wanted the truth hidden.””

I looked down at Noah.

My son was asleep now, unaware that his entire existence had become the center of a war between people who had spent decades lying.

I kissed his forehead.

Then I looked at Arthur.

“Claire: I need to know everything.””

He nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“Claire: No more protecting me.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Arthur: No more.””

For the first time, I believed him.

Not because he deserved forgiveness.

Because he looked like a man who was finally tired of carrying the weight alone.

Arthur walked toward the old wooden table in the hallway.

He sat down slowly.

Everyone gathered around.

Even Diane.

That surprised me.

“Arthur: The day you were born, your mother discovered something unusual.””

He looked at me.

“Arthur: The hospital records showed that another child had been registered under your information.””

I frowned.

“Claire: Another child?””

Arthur nodded.

“Arthur: Someone had created a false identity.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Vanessa: Your mother realized it wasn’t an accident.””

“Claire: Why would someone create another identity using mine?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Diane spoke.

“Diane: Because they needed someone else to disappear.””

I turned toward her.

“Claire: Explain.””

Diane looked older than ever.

“Diane: There was a group of people who controlled information. Money. Records. Names.””

She swallowed.

“Diane: They didn’t just destroy people. They erased them.””

A chill moved through me.

“Claire: And my mother found out?””

Arthur nodded.

“Arthur: She found proof.””

“Claire: What proof?””

Victor answered.

“Victor: A list.””

Everyone looked at him.

“A list of people whose identities had been changed.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Marcus: Including yours.””

I looked at Victor.

“Claire: How do you know?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation bothered me.

“Claire: How do you know?””

Victor lowered his eyes.

“Victor: Because I helped create the system.””

The hallway went silent.

Marcus immediately moved toward him.

“Marcus: You admit it?””

Victor didn’t fight.

“I was young. I thought I was building something useful.””

“Marcus: You ruined lives.””

Victor looked at him.

“Victor: I know.””

I stared.

Everyone had blood on their hands.

Some more than others.

But everyone had chosen silence.

“Claire: Then why help my mother?””

Victor looked at the floor.

“Victor: Because she was the first person who made me realize what we had become.””

Arthur looked at him.

“Arthur: You should have helped sooner.””

Victor nodded.

“I should have.””

The honesty was unexpected.

Then Diane’s phone rang.

Everyone froze.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

“Claire: Who is it?””

She didn’t answer.

Arthur stood.

“Arthur: Diane.””

Slowly, she handed me the phone.

The screen showed a message.

*WE KNOW ABOUT THE FILE. BRING NOAH.*

My entire body went cold.

“No.””

The word came out before I could think.

I held Noah tighter.

Marcus immediately reached for the phone.

“Marcus: They’re threatening you.””

Diane shook her head.

“Diane: No.””

She looked terrified.

“Diane: They’re not threatening.””

She looked at me.

“They’re giving an order.””

A loud sound came from outside.

Cars.

Multiple cars.

Everyone turned toward the windows.

Victor whispered:

“They’re already here.””

Arthur stepped in front of me.

“Arthur: Claire, take Noah and go.””

I looked at him.

“Claire: Where?””

He looked toward the hidden wall.

The wall where he had been trapped.

“The place they never found.””

My heart stopped.

“Claire: There’s another room?””

Arthur nodded.

And for the first time since I entered the mansion, I realized something.

May you like

The wall hadn’t been built to hide him.

It had been built to hide something else.
