The Wall That Hid My Father / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8: The Truth My Father Buried

Nobody moved.

The hallway lights flickered once before becoming steady again.

But the feeling of danger remained.

Someone had been inside the mansion.

Someone had watched us.

Someone knew exactly what I had opened.

Marcus moved first.

He stepped toward the hallway entrance, scanning every corner.

“Marcus: Stay behind me.””

I almost laughed.

A few hours ago, I had never heard his name.

Now he was telling me he was protecting me.

“Claire: Why should I trust you?””

He stopped.

Fair question.

Marcus looked at me.

“Marcus: You shouldn’t.””

That answer surprised me.

“Marcus: Not yet.””

Arthur slowly pushed himself up.

“Arthur: Claire, listen to me.””

I looked at him.

“Arthur: Whatever happens next, do not let anyone separate you from Noah.””

My heart tightened.

“Claire: Why?””

Arthur looked toward the box.

“Arthur: Because that was the reason they kept searching.””

I looked down at my son.

He was too young to understand.

Too innocent.

And yet somehow, his existence was connected to everything.

“Claire: What does Noah have to do with this?””

Arthur hesitated.

That hesitation hurt.

“Claire: Dad.””

Finally, he spoke.

“Arthur: Your mother left something for you.””

I blinked.

“Claire: My mother?””

I had so few memories of her.

A perfume bottle on a dresser.

A song she used to sing.

A photograph beside my bed.

Diane always said my mother’s death was an accident.

But now I wasn’t sure I believed anything.

“Claire: What did she leave?””

Arthur looked at Diane.

“Arthur: Diane knows.””

Every head turned.

Diane went still.

“Claire: You knew?””

She looked exhausted.

“Diane: I was trying to keep it hidden.””

“Claire: From me?””

“Diane: From them.””

She pointed toward the entrance.

Toward the invisible threat outside.

I shook my head.

“Claire: You don’t get to use fear as an excuse anymore.””

Diane’s eyes filled with tears.

“Diane: Claire, I know you hate me.””

I said nothing.

“Diane: But every choice I made was because I promised your mother I would protect you.””

The words hit me.

My mother.

A promise.

A secret.

A lifetime of silence.

“Claire: What promise?””

Diane looked at Arthur.

Arthur nodded slowly.

Diane reached into her cardigan pocket.

She pulled out a small necklace.

My breath caught.

I knew it.

I had seen it in old photographs.

My mother wore it every day.

“Claire: Where did you get that?””

Diane held it tightly.

“Diane: Your mother gave it to me the night she died.””

The hallway went silent.

“Claire: Why?””

Diane looked down.

“Diane: Because she knew she wasn’t going to survive.””

My stomach dropped.

“Claire: What?””

Arthur closed his eyes.

“Arthur: Claire…”

“Claire: You told me it was an accident.””

No one spoke.

That was enough.

My entire childhood was collapsing in real time.

I stepped backward.

“No.””

The word barely left my mouth.

“Claire: No, you don’t get to do this.””

I looked at Arthur.

“Claire: You don’t get to come back after thirty years and tell me every memory I have is wrong.””

Arthur looked broken.

“Arthur: I know.””

“Claire: Do you?””

My voice cracked.

“Claire: Do you know what it feels like to miss someone who didn’t leave?””

He looked away.

Because he knew.

Because he had no answer.

A sound came from upstairs.

A door closing.

Everyone looked up.

Marcus whispered:

“Marcus: We’re not alone.””

Evelyn immediately moved toward the staircase.

“Evelyn: They found us.””

Diane grabbed my arm.

“Diane: We have to go.””

I pulled away.

“Claire: No.””

Everyone stopped.

I held Noah tighter.

“Claire: I spent my whole life running after answers.””

I looked around the hallway.

“Claire: I’m not running anymore.””

Then I looked at Arthur.

“Claire: Tell me everything.””

Arthur stared at me.

The old man who had been hidden behind a wall for years.

The father I lost.

The father I found.

He finally nodded.

“Arthur: Your mother discovered something.””

“Claire: What?””

His voice dropped.

“Arthur: Something about your birth.””

I froze.

“Claire: My birth?””

Arthur looked at Noah.

“Arthur: Something that connects you and your son.””

Before I could ask another question, the upstairs footsteps stopped.

A shadow appeared on the balcony above us.

Everyone looked up.

A woman’s voice echoed through the mansion.

“Voice: Claire…”

My blood turned cold.

“Voice: Your father lied about the day you were born.””

Arthur closed his eyes.

Diane whispered:

“No.””

The woman stepped into view.

And when I saw her face…

May you like

I knew exactly who she was.

Because she was holding a photograph of my mother.
