Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Ballroom

The ballroom had never felt so quiet.

Evelyn watched Daniel carefully.

The man who had spent the entire evening moving through the reception with calm professionalism now looked genuinely concerned.

That alone told her everything.

For years, Evelyn had believed money was not something to use as a weapon.

She believed generosity should come from love.

But she had also learned something painful.

Sometimes people only respected what they could lose.

Daniel looked around at the guests gathering closer.

“Mrs. Carter, may I speak with you privately?””

Brielle immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She forced a smile.

“I mean… there’s no need for secrets at my wedding.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Your wedding?””

The question was quiet.

But it made Brielle uncomfortable.

Marcus stepped between them slightly.

“Mom, please.””

Evelyn looked at her son.

“Please what?””

Marcus opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was the answer.

Brielle shook her head.

“You’re making this dramatic.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Mrs. Carter, should I proceed according to your instructions?””

Brielle’s face changed.

“Your instructions?””

She looked at Marcus.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked away.

Evelyn noticed.

And for the first time that night, she understood something.

Her son knew more than he was admitting.

She turned to him.

“Marcus.””

He slowly looked at her.

“When did you plan on telling her?””

Brielle frowned.

“Telling me what?””

Nobody answered.

The silence became heavier.

Evelyn remembered the first day Marcus brought Brielle home.

Brielle had been charming.

Polite.

She had held Evelyn’s hands and said, “I can see where Marcus gets his kindness from.””

Evelyn believed her.

She wanted to believe her.

She wanted Marcus to have found someone who loved him.

But over time, small things changed.

Brielle stopped asking Evelyn how she was.

She stopped visiting.

She stopped pretending when nobody important was watching.

Then came the wedding planning.

The endless requests.

The expensive ideas.

The expectation that Evelyn would quietly pay.

Evelyn had accepted because she loved her son.

But tonight, she saw the truth.

Brielle did not see a mother.

She saw a resource.

Daniel looked at Brielle.

“Mrs. Carter arranged the entire reception.””

A few guests gasped.

Brielle blinked.

“What?””

“The ballroom reservation,” Daniel continued.

“The catering contract. The floral arrangements. The guest services.””

He paused.

“All of it.””

Brielle stared at him.

Then she laughed.

A small, disbelieving laugh.

“No.””

Evelyn said nothing.

Brielle turned toward Marcus.

“Tell me he’s wrong.””

Marcus stayed silent.

Her smile disappeared.

“Marcus?””

He looked at the floor.

That was enough.

Brielle’s face turned red.

“You knew?””

Marcus finally spoke.

“Brielle, I was going to explain.””

“When?””

Her voice rose.

“After we cut the cake? After everyone left?””

Guests shifted uncomfortably.

Evelyn watched her son.

Not with anger.

With disappointment.

Marcus had not protected his mother.

He had not protected his wife either.

He had simply hoped the truth would stay hidden forever.

Brielle stepped toward Evelyn.

“So this was your plan?””

Evelyn remained calm.

“My plan?””

“To embarrass me.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

“Then why do this?””

Evelyn looked at the room.

At the beautiful decorations.

At the people who had witnessed her humiliation.

“Because I wanted to see who people became when they thought I had nothing left to give.””

Brielle froze.

For the first time, she had no immediate response.

Daniel’s phone buzzed again.

He looked down.

His expression became even more serious.

Evelyn noticed.

“What is it?””

Daniel hesitated.

“There’s something else.””

Brielle immediately looked nervous.

“What else?””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“It’s about the payment agreement.””

Marcus frowned.

“What payment agreement?””

Daniel slowly turned his phone around.

“There was a condition attached when Mrs. Carter booked this ballroom.””

Evelyn’s expression remained unreadable.

Brielle stepped closer.

“What condition?””

Daniel looked directly at Marcus.

And the color drained from Marcus’s face.

May you like

Because whatever was written on that screen…

he already knew about it.
