Chapter 7: The Secret Evelyn Never Knew

The ballroom went silent.

Not the uncomfortable silence from before.

Not the silence of guests watching an argument.

This was different.

This was the silence of a room realizing there was a bigger truth hiding underneath everything.

Evelyn stared at Brielle.

“Your husband?””

The words felt strange.

Almost impossible.

Brielle looked at her phone.

Her fingers trembled.

Marcus noticed.

“Brielle.””

She slowly lowered the phone.

“I’m sorry.””

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

“For what?””

Brielle looked around the ballroom.

At the guests.

At Tanya.

At Daniel.

Then finally at Marcus.

“I thought I knew everything.””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“What does that mean?””

Brielle looked at him.

“You never told me.””

The accusation in her voice was clear.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Told you what?””

Brielle laughed softly.

A bitter, nervous laugh.

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Act confused.””

The guests watched silently.

Evelyn looked between them.

Something had shifted.

For the first time, Marcus looked less like someone trapped by his mother’s anger and more like someone afraid of what was about to come out.

Brielle lifted her phone.

“The person who just called me said there is another secret.””

Marcus’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But Evelyn saw it.

Mothers notice things other people miss.

Small movements.

Tiny reactions.

The hesitation before a lie.

“Marcus,” Evelyn said quietly.

He didn’t answer.

“Look at me.””

Slowly, he did.

“Is there something else?””

Marcus opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

That was enough.

Evelyn felt the disappointment settle deeper.

Not because there was another secret.

But because he still needed to be forced into honesty.

Brielle looked at him.

“You told me your mother was controlling.””

Marcus looked away.

“What?””

“You said she always wanted to be involved. You said she used money to control people.””

Evelyn felt a sharp pain in her chest.

Because those words sounded familiar.

Not because she had heard them from Brielle.

Because Marcus had once said something similar.

Years ago.

After his father died.

He had told her she worried too much.

That she needed to stop trying to fix everything.

She thought he was growing up.

She never imagined he was learning how to distance himself from her.

Tanya stepped closer.

“Marcus has always been good at changing the story.””

Marcus glared at her.

“You don’t know anything about my family.””

Tanya shook her head.

“I knew enough.””

She looked at Evelyn.

“I knew when he asked you for money after we got engaged.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“I needed help.””

“You needed help because you spent your savings trying to impress people who didn’t even respect you.””

Brielle looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Tanya reached into her bag again.

She pulled out another document.

“This.””

Marcus immediately moved forward.

“No.””

Everyone noticed.

Evelyn’s eyes stayed on him.

“What is it?””

Tanya handed it over.

Evelyn read the first line.

Her expression changed.

It was a financial statement.

A private account.

And attached to it was Marcus’s name.

But it wasn’t the name that shocked her.

It was the date.

A date from months before the wedding planning started.

Months before Marcus claimed he was struggling.

Evelyn looked up.

“You had money.””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“Mom…”

“You had money.””

Her voice became stronger.

“You told me you couldn’t afford the wedding.””

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“I didn’t want to use my savings.””

The room became completely still.

Evelyn stared at him.

“You didn’t want to use your savings.””

She repeated the sentence slowly.

“But you wanted to use mine?””

Marcus said nothing.

Brielle looked disgusted.

“You told me we were starting fresh.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“We are.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“No, we aren’t.””

She pointed at the ballroom.

“At least now I know whose money this was.””

Evelyn looked at Brielle.

She expected anger.

Instead, she saw something unexpected.

Betrayal.

Brielle had not only been exposed.

She had been deceived too.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Mrs. Carter, I apologize for interrupting.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“What is it?””

He held up his phone.

“The hotel owner is requesting confirmation.””

Marcus looked alarmed.

“Why would the owner call?””

Daniel answered calmly.

“Because Mrs. Carter’s account is attached to the event authorization.””

Brielle looked at Evelyn.

“You mean she can actually stop everything?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Mom, don’t.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Don’t what?””

He lowered his voice.

“Don’t make a decision while you’re angry.””

Evelyn almost smiled.

Almost.

Because that was the first thing he had said all night that sounded like concern.

But it came too late.

“I’m not angry, Marcus.””

She looked at the ballroom.

“I’m awake.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel waited.

Tanya watched.

Brielle held her phone tightly.

Then it rang again.

This time, she looked terrified before answering.

She listened.

Her face changed.

Then she slowly turned toward Evelyn.

“Mrs. Carter…”

Evelyn looked at her.

“What?””

Brielle swallowed.

“The person who called me…”

May you like

She paused.

“She said she was your attorney.””
