Chapter 8: The Woman Behind The Money
Evelyn felt the entire room change.
Her attorney.
Those words carried weight.
Not because she was afraid.
Because she understood what they meant.
Someone else had been watching.
Someone else knew.
Daniel stepped back respectfully.
Tanya looked surprised.
Even Marcus seemed confused.
“Your attorney?”” he asked.
Evelyn looked at him.
“Yes.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why would your attorney call Brielle?””
Evelyn did not answer immediately.
Because she did not know.
And that bothered her.
She had spent the last hour discovering secrets about her son.
But now she was realizing she might have secrets too.
Brielle slowly brought the phone back to her ear.
“She’s still on the line.””
Everyone looked at her.
“Put her on speaker,” Marcus said.
Brielle hesitated.
Then she did.
A woman’s calm voice filled the ballroom.
“Mrs. Carter?””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Yes. This is Evelyn.””
The voice softened.
“Good. I was hoping you would answer personally.””
Evelyn recognized the voice.
“Angela?””
“Yes.””
Angela had been Evelyn’s attorney for almost fifteen years.
She had handled business matters.
Property documents.
Contracts.
Everything Evelyn trusted with her future.
“Angela,” Evelyn said carefully.
“Why are you calling Brielle?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because I believe you need to hear something before you make any decisions tonight.””
Marcus looked nervous.
“About what?””
Angela ignored him.
“Mrs. Carter, did Marcus tell you he had financial difficulties?””
Evelyn closed her eyes briefly.
“Yes.””
Angela was quiet.
“That was not true.””
A wave of whispers moved through the ballroom.
Marcus shook his head.
“Angela, this isn’t necessary.””
The attorney continued.
“I reviewed several transactions connected to the wedding arrangements.””
Evelyn’s stomach tightened.
“What did you find?””
Angela answered slowly.
“Your son had access to funds he did not disclose.””
Marcus looked away.
Brielle whispered:
“How much?””
Angela did not answer her.
Instead, she said:
“Enough to cover this wedding himself.””
The room erupted with quiet reactions.
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
He seemed smaller now.
Not physically.
But emotionally.
Like every excuse he had built was collapsing around him.
“You let me believe you needed me,” Evelyn said.
Marcus looked at her.
“I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
He hesitated.
“Failing.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“So you chose to hide.””
Marcus’s eyes filled.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“When?””
Again, no answer.
Evelyn looked away.
That hurt more than anger.
Because she had spent years believing Marcus was responsible.
That he made mistakes, but he tried.
Now she wondered how many mistakes had been hidden behind her love.
Brielle looked at Marcus.
“I married someone I don’t know.””
Marcus immediately looked at her.
“Brielle.””
“No.””
She stepped back.
“You let me believe your mother was the problem.””
Marcus’s face tightened.
“She was always judging me.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“I was judging your choices.””
The sentence landed hard.
“You confused accountability with cruelty.””
Marcus looked down.
Angela spoke again.
“Mrs. Carter, there is one more matter.””
Evelyn turned toward the phone.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“The wedding contract included a protection clause.””
Daniel looked up.
He knew.
Brielle noticed.
“What protection clause?””
Angela continued.
“A clause preventing anyone from transferring responsibility for the event costs without your written approval.””
Brielle looked confused.
“Why would she need that?””
Nobody answered.
Then Tanya did.
“Because someone tried.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“Tanya.””
She looked at him.
“You thought nobody would notice.””
Evelyn’s eyes moved slowly toward her son.
“What did you try to do?””
Marcus looked terrified.
“Mom…”
“What did you try to do?””
He remained silent.
Angela answered.
“Marcus attempted to move certain financial obligations under a shared account.””
Evelyn felt cold.
“Shared account?””
Brielle looked at Marcus.
“What shared account?””
The silence answered before anyone did.
Brielle’s expression changed.
“You used my name?””
Marcus whispered:
“I was going to fix it.””
Brielle stepped away from him.
“You put debt in my name?””
Marcus reached for her.
“Brielle, listen—”
She pulled back.
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“No, you listen.””
The bride who had entered the ballroom with confidence was gone.
“I thought your mother was humiliating me.””
She looked at Evelyn.
“But she was the only person in this room who was honest.””
Evelyn did not respond.
Because she was still processing.
Her son.
Her only child.
The person she had defended her entire life.
Had built a wedding on lies.
Daniel’s phone buzzed.
Everyone looked at him.
He checked the message.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
Evelyn noticed.
“What now?””
Daniel looked at her.
“Mrs. Carter…”
He hesitated.
“The police have arrived.””
The ballroom froze.
Marcus went pale.
Brielle whispered:
“Why?””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
May you like
And said:
“Because someone filed a report before tonight’s ceremony began.””
