Chapter 3: The Name On The Contract
Marcus stared at Daniel’s phone like it was a document from a nightmare.
The ballroom lights reflected in his eyes.
For the first time all evening, he looked afraid.
Evelyn noticed.
“Marcus.””
He did not answer.
“Look at me.””
Slowly, he did.
The little boy who used to run into her arms after school was gone.
Standing in front of her was a grown man who had made choices he did not want to explain.
Brielle noticed his reaction too.
“What is on that contract?””
Marcus shook his head.
“Brielle…”
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“No, don’t do that. Don’t say my name like that. Tell me.””
Daniel cleared his throat.
“Mrs. Carter requested that certain responsibilities remain under her authorization.””
Brielle looked confused.
“What responsibilities?””
Daniel glanced at Evelyn.
“She wanted final approval over major changes made to the event.””
Brielle laughed.
“You’re telling me she controlled my wedding?””
Evelyn answered calmly.
“No.””
She looked at Brielle.
“I protected the money I spent on it.””
The guests became silent again.
Brielle pointed at her.
“So you were waiting for this moment.””
Evelyn tilted her head.
“What moment?””
“The moment you could remind everyone you paid.””
Evelyn’s expression softened.
“That’s what you think this is about?””
Brielle did not respond.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“I gave because I loved my son.””
She looked at Marcus.
“I never needed anyone to thank me.””
Then she looked back at Brielle.
“But I will not stand quietly while someone treats me like I am disposable.””
Nobody spoke.
Even the people who had been whispering earlier were silent.
Marcus finally stepped forward.
“Mom, I’m sorry.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“I know.””
His face tightened.
Those two words hurt him more than anger would have.
Because they meant she had expected better.
“I should have said something,” Marcus whispered.
“Yes,” Evelyn replied.
The honesty shocked him.
Brielle shook her head.
“This is ridiculous.””
She grabbed Marcus’s arm.
“Come on. We don’t need this.””
Marcus did not move.
“Marcus.””
Still nothing.
Her grip loosened.
“Are you seriously taking her side?””
Marcus looked between them.
“I’m trying to understand how we got here.””
Brielle’s eyes narrowed.
“You know exactly how we got here.””
Daniel looked down at his phone again.
A new message appeared.
His eyebrows rose.
Evelyn noticed.
“Daniel?””
He hesitated.
“Mrs. Carter…”
“What is it?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“There is one more thing you should know before I proceed.””
Brielle immediately stepped closer.
“No. Whatever it is, say it.””
Daniel looked at the guests.
Then back at Evelyn.
“The contract was not only connected to the reception.””
Marcus suddenly spoke.
“Daniel, don’t.””
Everyone turned toward him.
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.
“Don’t what?””
Marcus looked trapped.
Brielle’s face changed.
“Marcus?””
He said nothing.
And that silence was louder than any confession.
Evelyn slowly turned toward Daniel.
“What else did I pay for?””
Daniel took a breath.
Then he answered.
“The entire wedding arrangement.””
A murmur moved through the ballroom.
Brielle looked around.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel held his phone tightly.
“It means the cancellation request affects more than tonight.””
Marcus went pale.
“Mom…”
Evelyn looked at her son.
Not angry.
Not cruel.
Just tired.
Then Daniel’s radio crackled at his side.
His hand moved toward it.
Brielle saw the motion.
And suddenly, the confidence disappeared from her face.
“Wait.””
Daniel stopped.
Brielle looked at Evelyn.
For the first time, she was no longer looking at an old woman she could insult.
She was looking at someone she had underestimated.
And Evelyn’s phone buzzed.
A new message appeared on the screen.
One name.
One name she never expected to see tonight.
She opened it.
May you like
And her face changed.
Because the message was from someone who knew the truth about Marcus and Brielle long before she did.
