Chapter 6: The Cost Of A Perfect Wedding
Nobody moved.
The ballroom felt frozen between two moments.
The wedding everyone had come to celebrate was gone.
In its place stood a family facing years of hidden choices.
Tanya held the phone in her hand.
Marcus stared at it like it could destroy him.
“Don’t,” he said quietly.
Tanya looked at him.
“Why?””
Her voice was calm.
“Because everyone will finally know?””
Marcus looked around.
At the guests.
At Brielle.
At his mother.
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked everyone.
Even Marcus seemed surprised that he admitted it.
Evelyn looked at her son.
“Tell me something.””
Marcus swallowed.
“What?””
“Were you ever going to tell me?””
The question was simple.
But it carried years of disappointment.
Marcus looked away.
“No.””
The answer hurt more than any lie.
Brielle stared at him.
“No?””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“I didn’t know how.””
Tanya shook her head.
“You knew exactly how.””
She unlocked her phone.
“You just didn’t want consequences.””
Brielle stepped closer.
“Show me.””
Tanya hesitated.
Then turned the screen toward her.
Brielle read.
Her face changed.
The confidence disappeared.
“What is this?””
Nobody answered.
She scrolled.
Her breathing became faster.
“These are fake.””
Tanya looked at her.
“Are they?””
Brielle looked at Marcus.
“You said your mother offered.””
Marcus stayed silent.
“You said she wanted to help.””
Still silence.
“You said she loved being involved.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Did you say that?””
Marcus’s shoulders dropped.
“Yes.””
Brielle laughed once.
A broken sound.
“So you lied to both of us.””
Marcus rubbed his face.
“I was trying to make everything work.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.””
She spoke softly.
“You were trying to make everything comfortable.””
The words landed.
Marcus looked at her.
“You don’t understand.””
“I understand perfectly.””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“When things were difficult, I helped you.””
Her voice trembled slightly.
“But you started confusing my love with your permission.””
Marcus looked down.
No argument.
No excuse.
Because there was none.
Daniel approached carefully.
“Mrs. Carter.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Yes?””
“I need your final decision.””
The room became quiet.
Everyone knew what he meant.
The reception.
The contracts.
Everything.
Brielle’s eyes filled with panic.
“Evelyn.””
It was the first time she had used her name.
Not “that woman.””
Not an insult.
Just Evelyn.
“I know I was wrong.””
Evelyn studied her.
Brielle looked nothing like the confident bride from earlier.
Her perfect makeup could not hide the fear.
“I should not have spoken to you that way.””
Evelyn said nothing.
Brielle continued.
“I was angry.””
“No,” Evelyn replied.
Brielle stopped.
Evelyn’s voice remained calm.
“You were comfortable.””
The room went silent.
“You were comfortable believing I existed only when you needed something.””
Brielle looked down.
For once, she had no defense.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Mom, please.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“What are you asking me for?””
He struggled.
“Forgiveness.””
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“Forgiveness is not the same as pretending nothing happened.””
Marcus looked broken.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Her words were gentle.
That made them hurt more.
“You know you’re losing something today.””
She looked around the ballroom.
“But I lost something long before this.””
Marcus whispered:
“What?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“The belief that you would protect me when I needed you.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel lowered his radio.
Waiting.
Tanya stood quietly beside Evelyn.
Brielle wiped away a tear.
Then her phone rang.
Everyone looked at her.
She stared at the screen.
The name calling made her freeze.
Marcus noticed.
“Who is it?””
Brielle did not answer.
Her hand shook.
Evelyn watched her carefully.
Because after everything revealed tonight…
there was still one question.
Why had Brielle been so certain this wedding could never be taken away?
Brielle slowly answered the call.
“Hello?””
A voice came through.
Her face went completely pale.
Then she looked at Evelyn.
And whispered:
“She knows.””
Evelyn frowned.
“Who knows?””
Brielle lowered the phone.
May you like
And before anyone could speak, she said the one sentence that changed the entire room.
“Your husband’s secret.””
