Chapter 4: The Message That Changed Everything
Evelyn stared at the name glowing on her phone screen.
For several seconds, she forgot the noise around her.
The whispers.
The nervous movements.
The sound of crystal glasses being placed carefully back onto tables.
Everything disappeared.
Because the message was from someone she never expected to hear from again.
*Tanya.*
Marcus’s ex-fiancée.
The woman who had disappeared from his life three years earlier.
The woman everyone said had simply “walked away.””
Evelyn remembered that night.
Marcus had called her crying.
He said Tanya had abandoned him.
He said he had been heartbroken.
And Evelyn, being his mother, believed her son.
She believed the pain in his voice.
She believed the story he told her.
But now, standing in the middle of a wedding ballroom where everything she had built for her son was falling apart, Tanya was sending her a message.
Evelyn opened it.
One sentence.
*“Mrs. Carter, I’m sorry you’re finding out this way. But you deserve to know the truth about why Tanya left.””*
Evelyn’s fingers tightened around the phone.
Marcus noticed.
His face changed instantly.
“Mom?””
She looked up.
“What did Tanya mean?””
The color drained from Marcus’s face.
Brielle looked between them.
“Who is Tanya?””
Nobody answered.
That made her even more suspicious.
“Marcus.””
Her voice became sharper.
“Who is Tanya?””
Marcus swallowed.
“She’s nobody.””
Evelyn slowly looked at him.
“Nobody?””
Her voice was quiet.
“Interesting choice of words.””
Daniel stood nearby, still holding his radio.
He watched the family tension unfold without interrupting.
Brielle stepped closer to Marcus.
“You told me you had no serious relationship before me.””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“That’s not what I said.””
“Yes, it is.””
Her voice echoed across the ballroom.
“You said your past was complicated, but you never said there was another woman.””
Evelyn looked at her son.
“And you never told me you were seeing someone else seriously after Tanya.””
Marcus looked away.
That tiny movement confirmed something.
Brielle noticed too.
Her anger shifted.
Not toward Evelyn.
Toward Marcus.
“You lied to me?””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Brielle, this isn’t the time.””
She laughed bitterly.
“Not the time?””
She looked around the ballroom.
“Your mother just stopped a wedding reception, and you’re telling me this isn’t the time?””
Several guests looked uncomfortable.
Evelyn ignored them.
She focused on her phone.
Another message arrived.
*“Ask him about the missing money.””*
Her heart stopped.
Missing money.
Slowly, she looked at Marcus.
“Money?””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
Evelyn held up her phone.
“Why would Tanya tell me to ask you about missing money?””
Brielle turned toward him.
“What money?””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“Mom, don’t do this.””
Evelyn stared at him.
“Don’t do what?””
“Dig into things that are over.””
The answer disturbed her.
Because innocent people usually said they had nothing to hide.
They did not ask you to stop looking.
Daniel stepped forward carefully.
“Mrs. Carter, perhaps we should continue this conversation somewhere private.””
Evelyn looked around.
At the guests.
At the decorations.
At the wedding she had paid for.
“No.””
Her voice surprised everyone.
“I spent months being kept outside conversations that affected me.””
She looked at Marcus.
“I’m done leaving rooms so other people can tell the truth without me.””
Marcus looked hurt.
“Mom.””
“No.””
The firmness in her voice silenced him.
“You had every opportunity.””
Brielle crossed her arms.
“This is unbelievable.””
Evelyn turned toward her.
“You’re right.””
Brielle blinked.
“You’re finally admitting it?””
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“It is unbelievable.””
She looked at Marcus.
“That my own son allowed someone to disrespect me in a room I paid for.””
Marcus looked down.
The guilt on his face was obvious.
But Evelyn wasn’t ready to forgive.
Not yet.
Daniel’s radio crackled again.
This time, he answered.
“Yes?””
Everyone looked at him.
Daniel listened.
His expression became serious.
Then he looked directly at Evelyn.
“Mrs. Carter, security is asking if they should stop the delivery vehicles outside.””
Brielle frowned.
“Delivery vehicles?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
She looked confused.
“What deliveries?””
Evelyn remained silent.
Because suddenly, she understood.
The wedding was not the only thing she had arranged.
There were other pieces.
Other promises.
Other things Marcus and Brielle had assumed would simply appear.
Daniel lowered the radio.
“Should I tell them to proceed?””
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
Then at Brielle.
And finally back at Daniel.
Before she could answer, Brielle grabbed her arm.
“Wait.””
The entire ballroom watched.
Brielle’s voice dropped.
“Whatever you’re planning…”
She paused.
Then whispered:
“Please don’t destroy my life.””
For the first time that night, Evelyn saw fear in Brielle’s eyes.
But before Evelyn could respond, Daniel’s phone buzzed again.
He looked down.
And this time, his face turned pale.
May you like
Because the message was not from security.
It was from the person who had just arrived at the ballroom entrance.
