The Will She Never Saw Coming / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12: The Evidence Nobody Was Supposed to Find

The hallway was dark.

Too dark.

I stared at the closed bedroom door.

Every instinct told me not to move closer.

But I had spent too long letting fear make decisions for me.

Not anymore.

I moved forward.

Simone followed behind.

“Adrian, wait.””

I stopped.

“Why?””

She looked terrified.

“Because if it’s who I think it is…”

The door opened.

Slowly.

And nobody was there.

The room was empty.

But something had changed.

The closet was open.

The drawers were pulled out.

Someone had searched through everything.

I looked around.

“They were looking for something.””

Simone nodded.

“Yes.””

I turned.

“You know what.””

She looked away.

That was answer enough.

“What are they looking for?””

She didn’t respond.

“Simone.””

She whispered:

“The original documents.””

“Which documents?””

“The ones proving your father’s plan.””

I felt my chest tighten.

The pattern was becoming clear.

Everyone wanted the same thing.

My father’s hidden protection.

The thing Marcus was trying to find.

The thing everyone kept secrets about.

I searched the room.

Then I saw it.

A small piece of paper on the floor.

Not mine.

Not Simone’s.

A note.

I picked it up.

Three words.

“Check the hospital.””

My blood ran cold.

Because I knew exactly which hospital.

The one where everything changed.

The one where my life fell apart.

The one where people told me I was lucky to survive.

I called Daniel.

He answered immediately.

“What happened?””

“Someone was here.””

Silence.

“Adrian…”

“They left a message.””

“What message?””

“Check the hospital.””

Daniel stopped speaking.

That scared me.

“What?””

Finally, he said:

“You need to know the truth about that day.””

“What day?””

“The day you got sick.””

I looked at Simone.

She looked like she already knew.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“Your illness wasn’t the first attempt.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What?””

“There was another attempt before.””

I felt the room spinning.

“And you knew?””

“Yes.””

“Everyone knew except me.””

No one answered.

That was the answer.

I ended the call.

Then I looked at Simone.

“Take me there.””

Her eyes widened.

“Adrian.””

“Take me to the hospital.””

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

The hospital looked exactly the same.

White walls.

Bright lights.

The smell of disinfectant.

A place filled with memories I had spent years trying to forget.

We walked through the halls until we reached the records department.

Simone stopped.

“I can’t go in there.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because this is where I found it.””

I entered alone.

A nurse looked up.

“Can I help you?””

“I need old records.””

She studied me.

“What year?””

I gave the date.

Her expression changed.

“Those records were sealed.””

“Why?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“Doctor’s request.””

“Which doctor?””

She hesitated.

Then said:

“Dr. Harris.””

Of course.

I felt anger rising.

But I kept calm.

“Can I see them?””

“I’m sorry.””

I turned.

A voice behind me spoke.

“You won’t find what you’re looking for.””

I froze.

I knew that voice.

Marcus.

I turned slowly.

He stood at the end of the hallway.

Smiling.

Not the smug smile from before.

A different one.

A confident one.

Because now he thought he had control again.

“You followed me.””

“No.””

He walked closer.

“I came because I knew you would eventually come here.””

“Why?””

“Because this is where your story began.””

I stared at him.

“You mean your plan.””

His smile faded slightly.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He stopped a few feet away.

“You think I wanted your money?””

“Yes.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Your company?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Marcus looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something different.

Not arrogance.

Not confidence.

Fear.

“I wanted to know what your father hid.””

The hallway went silent.

I stepped closer.

“And why?””

Marcus looked past me.

Toward Simone.

Then back at me.

“Because your father didn’t create that plan to protect your company.””

My heartbeat slowed.

“What did he protect?””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“The truth.””

I waited.

“What truth?””

He took a breath.

Then said:

“The truth about who your father really was.””

Before I could answer, the hospital lights flickered.

A security alarm started.

People began moving through the hallway.

And when I looked back at Marcus…

He was gone.

But on the floor where he stood was a small envelope.

With my father’s handwriting on it.

May you like

And one sentence written across the front:

“Adrian, if you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you.””
