Chapter 7: The Person Behind the Door
The photograph stayed on my screen.
I wanted to believe I misunderstood it.
I wanted to believe there was another explanation.
A reflection.
A coincidence.
A mistake.
But there wasn’t.
The person standing outside my apartment wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone I had trusted.
Someone who knew my schedule.
Someone who knew my condition.
Someone who had been close enough to see every weakness I tried to hide.
I looked at Daniel.
Then Evelyn.
Neither of them spoke.
They didn’t need to.
Their silence told me they were waiting for me to process it.
The photograph showed my doctor.
Dr. Harris.
The man who had treated me through the darkest months of my illness.
The man who held my medical records.
The man who told me I might never walk normally again.
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“No.””
The word escaped before I could stop it.
Daniel leaned forward.
“I know.””
“You’re saying my doctor was involved?””
“I’m saying someone inside your circle was feeding Marcus information.””
Evelyn took the phone from my hand and studied the image.
“Adrian, we need to be careful.””
I looked at her.
“Careful?””
My voice rose slightly.
“For months, everyone around me knew things I didn’t.””
Nobody answered.
Because it was true.
I had spent my recovery thinking my biggest battle was my own body.
I never considered I was fighting people who wanted me to stay broken.
Simone sat quietly on the sofa.
She looked at the picture.
Then covered her mouth.
“Dr. Harris?””
I turned toward her.
“You knew him.””
She looked up.
“He treated you.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Her eyes filled.
“Adrian…”
I rolled closer.
“Did he ever talk to you?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
“When?””
She looked away.
“Simone.””
Her voice became barely audible.
“Before you got sick.””
The room went silent.
I felt like the floor had shifted.
“What?””
“He contacted me once.””
“Why?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
I stared at her.
“Try again.””
She closed her eyes.
“He asked questions.””
“What questions?””
“About you.””
The anger came quickly.
Not loud.
Not explosive.
Cold.
“What kind of questions?””
She swallowed.
“About your business. Your plans. Your investments.””
Evelyn stood.
“Did you answer him?””
Simone looked ashamed.
“Some things.””
I looked at the woman I had loved for years.
The woman who held my hand in hospitals.
The woman who promised she would never leave.
And suddenly I realized betrayal didn’t happen in one moment.
It happened in small decisions.
A conversation here.
A secret there.
A choice someone convinced themselves wasn’t serious.
Until the damage was impossible to undo.
I looked at Simone.
“How long?””
“What?””
“How long were you helping them?””
Tears rolled down her face.
“I don’t know.””
That answer hurt more than if she had admitted everything.
Because it meant she wasn’t even sure.
Daniel stood.
“There’s more.””
I looked at him.
“Of course there is.””
He opened the folder again.
Inside were records of meetings.
Dates.
Locations.
Names.
And one detail stood out.
Marcus and Dr. Harris met repeatedly.
But not just after I became sick.
Before.
Much before.
My breathing slowed.
“Why would my doctor work with Marcus?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because Marcus wasn’t the one who started the plan.””
I stared at him.
“Then who did?””
Nobody answered.
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A calm voice spoke.
“Adrian.””
My entire body froze.
I knew that voice.
Not because I heard it often.
Because I had trusted it completely.
“Dr. Harris?””
A pause.
Then:
“I was hoping you wouldn’t find out this way.””
Evelyn immediately motioned for me to put it on speaker.
I did.
“You’re involved.””
His sigh came through the phone.
“I’m involved in something you don’t understand.””
I almost laughed.
“You mean the part where people around me planned to take everything I built?””
Silence.
Then he said:
“You really think this is about money?””
Everyone looked at each other.
“What else would it be?””
Dr. Harris lowered his voice.
“Your illness wasn’t random.””
The room went still.
I felt every muscle in my body tighten.
“What did you say?””
“I said your illness wasn’t random.””
Simone gasped.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“What are you implying?””
The doctor didn’t answer her.
He spoke only to me.
“Adrian, you need to listen carefully.””
I gripped the phone.
“Talk.””
“Marcus didn’t find Simone.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Then what?””
“He was sent.””
A chill moved through the room.
“By who?””
Another silence.
Then Dr. Harris said:
“The same person who wanted you out of the company.””
The call ended.
Nobody moved.
The apartment felt smaller.
The walls felt closer.
Because the truth I had been searching for suddenly became much bigger.
This was never just about my marriage.
Never just about Simone.
Never just about Marcus.
Someone had been planning my downfall before I even knew I was falling.
And then Evelyn looked at the folder.
At the final document.
Her face changed.
“Adrian…”
I turned.
“What?””
She slowly lifted the paper.
“This name.””
I looked at it.
And my heart stopped.
May you like
Because the person behind everything wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone whose betrayal would hurt more than Simone’s.
