The Will She Never Saw Coming / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13: The Truth My Father Buried

I stared at the envelope for a long time.

My father’s handwriting.

My father’s name.

A message meant for me.

Years after his death.

For a moment, the hospital hallway disappeared.

The alarms.

The footsteps.

The voices around me.

Everything faded.

All I could see was the handwriting I remembered from childhood.

The same handwriting that signed birthday cards.

The same handwriting that wrote notes before business trips.

The same handwriting that promised he would always come home.

I reached down and picked up the envelope.

My hands were shaking.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I was finally close to an answer.

Simone stood beside me.

“Adrian…”

I didn’t look at her.

“How much did you know?””

She swallowed.

“Not enough.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She looked down.

“I knew your father left something behind.””

“And?””

“I knew Marcus was searching for it.””

“Why?””

She closed her eyes.

“Because he thought I had it.””

I looked at her.

“Why would he think that?””

She hesitated.

“Because I lied.””

The words landed quietly.

But they hurt.

“What did you lie about?””

Simone looked around the hallway.

Not wanting anyone else to hear.

“Your father contacted me before he died.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He knew he was sick.””

My chest tightened.

“What did he say?””

She looked away.

“He warned me.””

“About what?””

“About people around you.””

I stared at her.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I didn’t believe him.””

The honesty was painful.

“But then you found out.””

She nodded.

“After you got sick.””

I looked at the envelope.

The truth had been in front of me all along.

Hidden behind people who thought they knew what was best.

I opened it.

Inside was a small letter.

Only a few pages.

I read the first line.

“Adrian, if you are reading this, you survived what I feared most.””

My breathing stopped.

I continued.

“My greatest mistake was believing loyalty could be bought with kindness.””

I looked at Simone.

Then away.

The letter continued.

“I built a company, but I also built enemies. Some came from outside. Others sat at my table.””

My fingers tightened.

“Never confuse proximity with loyalty.””

Those words felt written for me.

Not for the company.

For my life.

The letter explained everything.

Years earlier, my father discovered executives were secretly moving company assets.

He found evidence.

He prepared a backup plan.

A hidden legal structure designed to protect everything he built.

But he also discovered something worse.

Someone close to him was helping.

Someone who had access to every decision.

Someone he trusted.

The letter never named them.

Instead, my father wrote:

“I do not want you to inherit my suspicion. I want you to earn your own truth.””

I stopped reading.

That sounded exactly like him.

He never wanted me to hate people.

He wanted me to understand them.

A shadow moved across the floor.

I looked up.

Andre stood at the end of the hallway.

He looked exhausted.

Like he had aged years overnight.

“You found it.””

I held up the letter.

“You knew.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Andre looked away.

“Because Dad asked me not to.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He told me if you ever found yourself surrounded by betrayal, I had to let you discover who people really were.””

I almost laughed.

“So everyone was testing me?””

“No.””

Andre stepped closer.

“We were protecting the last piece of evidence.””

I looked at him.

“Evidence of what?””

He took a breath.

“Who ordered everything.””

The hallway became silent.

I folded the letter.

“Who?””

Andre looked toward the exit.

“Your father never trusted one person.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Andre looked directly at me.

“Your mother’s brother.””

I froze.

My uncle.

A man who had attended every family event.

A man who called me nephew.

A man who gave speeches at my graduation.

Someone I never questioned.

My phone rang.

Evelyn.

I answered.

“Adrian.””

Her voice was urgent.

“We found the missing financial records.””

“Where?””

“In your father’s old storage account.””

My heart raced.

“What did you find?””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who financed Marcus.””

I looked at Andre.

“Who?””

Evelyn answered:

“Your uncle.””

The world went quiet.

Not because I was shocked anymore.

Because somehow, deep down, I knew.

The betrayal had always been closer than I imagined.

Then another notification appeared.

A message from Marcus.

Only one sentence.

“Now you know who the real enemy is.””

I stared at the screen.

But beneath his message was another one.

From an unknown number.

“Don’t trust Marcus. He wants you to find your uncle.””

I looked up.

Because suddenly I realized something.

May you like

Everyone was still trying to control where I looked.

And the truth was somewhere they didn’t want me searching.
