Chapter 3: The Woman Who Miscalculated

The photograph stayed on my screen for almost five minutes.

I didn’t move.

I didn’t blink.

I simply stared.

Because sometimes the most dangerous moments in life are not the loud ones.

They are the quiet seconds when the truth finally arrives.

The image showed Simone.

But not the Simone I knew from yesterday.

Not the confident woman standing beside Marcus.

Not the woman who looked certain she had made the right choice.

This Simone looked nervous.

Scared.

And she wasn’t alone.

I looked at the sender.

A name I hadn’t seen in years.

Daniel.

My former business partner.

The man Simone always called “jealous.””

The man she told me was trying to ruin my life.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

Evelyn noticed immediately.

“What happened?””

I turned the screen toward her.

She studied the photo.

Then looked back at me.

“Do you know what this means?””

“I think I do.””

“No,” she said carefully.

“You think you do.””

She tapped the screen.

“People are rarely as simple as they appear.””

I knew that better than anyone.

Because I had spent months believing Simone was my victim.

Someone who was scared.

Someone who couldn’t handle my illness.

Someone who made a terrible choice because she was overwhelmed.

But maybe I had been wrong.

Maybe there was more.

My phone rang again.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Why did you send me that?””

His voice was low.

“Because you deserve to know.””

“Know what?””

A pause.

Then:

“The woman who left you wasn’t just looking for a stronger man.””

I stood still.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying Marcus wasn’t the beginning.””

My chest tightened.

Evelyn looked at me.

I walked toward the window.

“Explain.””

Daniel sighed.

“I tried to tell you before. But Simone made sure you never heard me.””

The city lights reflected against the glass.

“She told me you were lying.””

“I know.””

“She told everyone I was obsessed with destroying your marriage.””

Another pause.

“But Adrian, I found something.””

I waited.

“Something connected to Simone and Marcus.””

My voice became quieter.

“What?””

“I can’t explain over the phone.””

I looked at Evelyn.

“Where are you?””

“Somewhere safe.””

That answer bothered me.

“Daniel.””

“Meet me tomorrow.””

The call ended.

I lowered the phone.

For months, I had focused on one question.

Why did Simone leave?

Now another question appeared.

What had she been hiding before she left?

Evelyn closed the folder.

“Are you still planning to go through with everything?””

I looked down at my wheelchair.

At the oxygen tube still resting beneath my nose.

At the symbol everyone associated with weakness.

“No,” I said.

Her eyes narrowed.

“What changed?””

I looked at the photograph again.

“I don’t know yet.””

Outside, rain began tapping against the windows.

A strange contrast to the bright afternoon when Simone had kissed Marcus in front of me.

That day, she wanted me to feel powerless.

Tonight, I realized something.

Power was not always about standing.

Sometimes power was knowing exactly when to wait.

The next morning, I arrived at the meeting place.

Daniel was already there.

He looked older.

More tired.

Like he had been carrying something heavy for a long time.

When he saw me, his expression changed.

“Adrian.””

“Daniel.””

He glanced at my wheelchair.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For believing she could never do this to you.””

The words bothered me.

“What did she do?””

Daniel reached into his bag.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Then he placed it on the table between us.

“I found this after you got sick.””

I stared at it.

“What is it?””

Daniel looked directly into my eyes.

“The reason Simone was never worried about losing you.””

My hand moved toward the envelope.

But before I touched it, my phone rang.

Simone.

Again.

I looked at the screen.

Daniel saw the name.

“She knows.””

My eyes lifted.

“How?””

Daniel’s face turned serious.

“Because someone told her you were asking questions.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

I looked from Daniel to the phone.

Simone kept calling.

And for the first time, I understood.

Yesterday, she wasn’t trying to hurt me.

She was trying to convince herself she still had control.

But control was already slipping away.

I finally answered.

“Hello?””

Her voice came immediately.

“Adrian.””

I waited.

“I need you to come home.””

Home.

The word almost sounded strange coming from her.

“Why?””

A long pause.

Then Simone whispered:

“Because there’s something you need to know before you open that envelope.””

I looked at Daniel.

His face had gone pale.

My hand rested on the envelope.

May you like

And then Simone said the one sentence I never expected to hear from her.

“Adrian… Marcus was never the person you should have been worried about.””
