Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Mask

The filing was dated three weeks before Simone left.

Three weeks.

That was the detail I couldn’t stop thinking about.

Not months.

Not years.

Three weeks.

The same time Simone started becoming distant.

The same time she stopped asking about my recovery.

The same time Marcus suddenly appeared in her life.

Everything connected.

Evelyn placed the phone down.

“He filed a claim.””

“For what?””

She looked at me.

“Control of your assets.””

I stared at the screen.

“That’s impossible.””

“Not if someone helped him.””

The room went silent.

Simone looked sick.

“I didn’t know.””

I turned toward her.

“Didn’t know what?””

“That he was doing this.””

“You helped him.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“But I didn’t know how far he would go.””

I looked at her.

“You brought a stranger into our marriage because he promised you security.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

“And now you’re surprised he’s exactly who he showed you he was.””

She had no answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

A knock came at the door.

Everyone froze.

Evelyn moved first.

“I’ll check.””

She walked toward the entrance.

I watched Simone.

For the first time, she looked afraid of Marcus.

Not guilty.

Not ashamed.

Afraid.

That told me everything.

“Where is he?””

She looked up.

“What?””

“Marcus.””

Her face tightened.

“I don’t know.””

“Stop lying.””

“I’m not.””

The door opened.

Evelyn returned.

But she wasn’t alone.

Daniel stood behind her.

His face was serious.

“We need to talk now.””

I looked at him.

“What happened?””

He walked inside.

“Marcus knows you found out.””

Simone stood quickly.

“How?””

Daniel looked at her.

“You tell me.””

She stepped back.

“I didn’t.””

Daniel pulled out his phone.

On the screen was a message.

From an unknown number.

A warning.

A threat.

Not to me.

To Daniel.

I read it.

“Stop helping Adrian, or Simone pays the price.””

The room became still.

I looked at Simone.

She looked terrified.

“He threatened you?””

She nodded slowly.

“I thought he was bluffing.””

Evelyn crossed her arms.

“You thought?””

Simone looked like she wanted to disappear.

“I thought I could control him.””

That sentence said more than anything else.

She hadn’t been innocent.

But she hadn’t understood the monster she invited inside.

I rolled closer.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked at me.

“I was ashamed.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were afraid.””

She didn’t deny it.

Because it was true.

For the first time, I saw Simone clearly.

Not as my wife.

Not as my enemy.

As someone who made a choice and was now trapped by it.

But understanding someone didn’t erase what they did.

Marcus had hurt me.

Simone had allowed it.

Both truths could exist.

Daniel sat down.

“There’s something else.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then handed me another folder.

“This is why I needed you to see everything before you acted.””

I opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Records.

And one name repeated again and again.

Marcus.

But beneath his name was something I never expected.

Another person.

Someone connected to him.

Someone who had been watching me long before Simone left.

I looked up.

“Who is this?””

Daniel’s face became serious.

“That’s the person who started all of this.””

I stared at the page.

The name felt familiar.

Too familiar.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Marcus.

Only four words.

“You finally figured it out.””

I looked at Simone.

Then Daniel.

Then back at the message.

A second message appeared.

“You still don’t know who you’re fighting.””

And attached was a photograph.

May you like

A photograph of someone standing outside my apartment.

Someone I thought had been on my side the entire time.
