Chapter 8: The Family Secret

I stared at the name on the paper.

I read it once.

Then again.

Hoping my eyes were wrong.

They weren’t.

My older brother.

Andre.

The person who taught me how to ride a bike.

The person who sat beside me after our father died.

The person who told me family was the only thing nobody could take away.

I looked at Daniel.

“Explain.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I didn’t want to believe it either.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“I need facts.””

Evelyn placed the document down.

“Adrian, this shows financial connections between Andre and Marcus.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t prove anything.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“But this does.””

He handed me another file.

Inside were emails.

Messages.

Conversations.

My eyes moved across the pages.

Andre had been discussing my company.

My illness.

My future.

My recovery.

My stomach turned.

“He knew.””

Daniel nodded.

“He knew everything.””

I looked away.

The hardest betrayal wasn’t always from someone who hated you.

Sometimes it came from someone who knew exactly where you were vulnerable.

Simone whispered:

“I didn’t know about Andre.””

I looked at her.

“You didn’t know?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

For once, I believed her.

Because this was bigger than her.

Bigger than Marcus.

Bigger than anything I had imagined.

I picked up my phone.

I called Andre.

One ring.

Two.

Three.

Then he answered.

“Adrian?””

His voice sounded normal.

That almost made it worse.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“Why?””

“Just answer.””

Another pause.

“I’m at the office.””

I looked at the documents.

“Interesting.””

“What does that mean?””

I closed my eyes.

“How long have you been working with Marcus?””

Silence.

Real silence.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

And that was the moment I knew.

“Adrian…”

“Answer me.””

His voice changed.

The warmth disappeared.

“You don’t understand what’s happening.””

“I understand enough.””

“No, you don’t.””

I gripped the phone.

“You betrayed me.””

“I saved you.””

The words shocked me.

“What?””

Andre sighed.

“You think I wanted this?””

“You helped someone destroy my life.””

“I prevented you from losing everything.””

I looked at everyone in the room.

“Explain.””

“You were sick.””

There it was again.

The same idea.

The same weapon.

My illness.

“You weren’t making decisions clearly.””

“That’s your excuse?””

“It’s the truth.””

I laughed quietly.

“Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me.””

Andre’s voice lowered.

“Because we were.””

“No.””

I looked at the papers.

“You were protecting yourselves.””

He became silent.

Then:

“You’ll understand when you know the whole story.””

“Tell me.””

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because if I tell you, they’ll come after you.””

I stood there, frozen.

“Who?””

But Andre had already ended the call.

I stared at the phone.

Evelyn spoke first.

“He’s scared.””

“He should be.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Adrian.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“You need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Your brother wasn’t trying to take your company.””

I frowned.

“Then what?””

Daniel looked at the documents.

“He was trying to stop someone else from taking it.””

The room went silent again.

I hated that sentence.

Because it changed everything.

Andre might have betrayed me.

But maybe he wasn’t the villain.

Maybe he was another person trapped inside something bigger.

I turned toward Simone.

She was crying quietly.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“For bringing Marcus into your life.””

I didn’t answer.

Because an apology couldn’t rebuild trust.

But it could reveal something.

Regret.

Real regret.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Andre.

One sentence.

“Meet me alone if you want the truth.””

I stared at it.

Evelyn immediately shook her head.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You think it’s a trap.””

“Yes.””

Daniel nodded.

“She’s right.””

I looked toward the window.

The city outside looked exactly the same.

People walking.

Cars moving.

Everyone living normal lives.

But my world had changed completely.

The people I trusted had secrets.

The enemies I knew had deeper plans.

And the truth was somewhere between all of them.

I typed a reply.

“Where?””

Andre responded immediately.

Then another message appeared.

This one wasn’t from him.

It was from Marcus.

“You really think your brother can save you?””

I froze.

Because Marcus shouldn’t have known about the meeting.

I looked up.

“How did he know?””

Nobody answered.

Then Simone quietly said:

“Because someone in this room told him.””

May you like

Everyone turned.

And she looked directly at me.
