Chapter 10: The Truth Behind the Birthday Wish

The little boy's crying echoed through the warehouse.

Daniel tightened his arms around the girl beside him.

Amelia stared toward the darkness.

“Who is that?”” she asked.

The silver-haired man didn't answer.

Marcus did.

“His name is Eli.””

Harris's eyes narrowed.

“Where is he?””

The crying came again.

“Help me!””

Harris immediately moved toward the sound.

The older man raised his weapon.

“Stay where you are.””

Harris stopped.

Daniel looked at him.

“Don't.””

The older man smiled.

“You've spent your entire life obeying people who claimed they knew what was best for you.””

Daniel's voice was cold.

“That ends tonight.””

He pushed the little girl behind him.

“Amelia, take them.””

She understood immediately.

She grabbed both girls and moved toward the archive corridor.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Don't.””

Amelia froze.

The little girl in her arms started crying.

Daniel moved between them.

“You don't get to tell her what to do anymore.””

Marcus lifted his gun.

Harris raised his weapon.

“Put it down.””

For the first time, Marcus looked uncertain.

Then a voice came from the darkness behind him.

“Marcus.””

The older man pointed.

“You're finished.””

Marcus slowly turned.

“What?””

“You've become careless.””

Marcus stared at him.

“After everything I did for you?””

“You did it because I allowed you to.””

Marcus's expression twisted.

“You promised me the company.””

“I promised you nothing.””

Daniel suddenly understood.

“You were using him.””

The old man smiled.

“Of course.””

He pointed toward the twins.

“Family is useful only when it is frightened.””

Marcus lowered his gun.

“You said I would inherit.””

“I said you would survive.””

Marcus's face changed.

“You're killing me.””

The old man didn't blink.

“You were never meant to leave this building.””

Marcus stared at him.

Then laughed bitterly.

“You really are insane.””

He turned suddenly and fired.

The bullet struck a metal shelf.

Harris tackled him.

The gun skidded across the concrete.

Marcus and Harris crashed into a stack of boxes.

Daniel pulled Amelia and the girls behind a steel support column.

“Stay down!””

Another gunshot cracked through the warehouse.

Then silence.

Daniel looked toward Harris.

He was wrestling Marcus to the ground.

Vanessa suddenly appeared from the archive corridor.

“Daniel!””

He turned.

“Eli is here.””

“Where?””

“In the red room.””

Amelia looked at her.

“You found him?””

“He was hiding under the table.””

“Take me to him.””

They ran.

The red door stood open.

Inside, a little boy sat curled against the wall.

He had dark skin, tight curls, and a small scar beneath his right eye.

He looked terrified.

Amelia crouched.

“Eli?””

The boy nodded.

She held out her hand.

“I'm Amelia.””

He stared at her.

“I know.””

“Who told you?””

“Your daughter.””

Amelia's heart stopped.

“Which one?””

Eli looked toward the two girls.

“The one in the pink dress.””

Daniel stared at the child in his arms.

Eli continued.

“She told me you're her mom.””

Amelia swallowed.

Then asked softly:

“What happened?””

Eli looked at Vanessa.

“She knows.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Knows what?””

Eli looked at him.

“I was in the car.””

Daniel's face changed.

“The second car?””

Eli nodded.

“My mom was driving.””

Amelia crouched lower.

“What happened?””

“She was scared.””

“Why?””

“Because the man in the other car kept following us.””

“Who?””

Eli pointed toward the doorway.

The silver-haired man stood there.

“Him.””

Daniel stared.

“No.””

Eli nodded.

“He followed us to the bridge.””

The old man's expression hardened.

“Enough.””

Eli flinched.

Daniel stepped between them.

“Let him speak.””

The boy continued.

“My mom called someone.””

“Who?””

“Mrs. Vanessa.””

Vanessa started crying.

Eli looked at her.

“She said she didn't know where Amelia was.””

Daniel turned to Vanessa.

“What did you tell her?””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“The truth.””

“What truth?””

“That Amelia had found the ledger.””

Eli continued.

“My mom told Vanessa that the man wanted the baby.””

Amelia's eyes widened.

“What baby?””

Eli pointed at the girls.

“One of them.””

Daniel looked between them.

Eli shook his head.

“No.””

He pointed toward himself.

“Me.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

Eli's voice trembled.

“I was the baby.””

Amelia stared.

Eli wiped his eyes.

“My mom had me that night.””

Vanessa whispered, “Oh God.””

Daniel looked at Harris.

Harris understood.

“He was in the second car.””

“Yes,” Eli said.

“My mom was supposed to take me somewhere safe.””

“Where?””

“To my aunt.””

“Who?””

Eli looked at Amelia.

“Your mother.””

Amelia's face collapsed.

“My mother?””

Eli nodded.

“She knew what they were doing.””

The old man suddenly moved.

Harris swung his weapon toward him.

“Don't.””

The man stopped.

Eli stared at him.

“You killed my mom.””

The old man's face remained emotionless.

“She was careless.””

Amelia's voice broke.

“You murdered a woman and stole her child.””

“She knew too much.””

“You murdered my mother too.””

“She knew too much.””

“And you tried to erase me.””

“You were a complication.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at him.

“I've been called many names.””

“Give me yours.””

A long silence.

Then:

“Victor Reed.””

Daniel's heart stopped.

“Not my father.””

Victor smiled.

“No.””

“His brother.””

Marcus, being held on the floor by Harris, laughed.

“You finally figured it out.””

Daniel looked at him.

“My uncle.””

Victor nodded.

“Your father had a conscience.””

Daniel stared.

“You replaced him.””

“After he died.””

“Ten years ago.””

“Yes.””

“You used his identity.””

“Yes.””

“You fooled everyone.””

“Almost everyone.””

Amelia looked at him.

“You couldn't fool Lily.””

Victor's expression tightened.

“The child remembers faces better than adults.””

Daniel looked at the girls.

“And which one is my daughter?””

Victor smiled.

“That is what you've been trying to discover.””

Eli suddenly spoke.

“I know.””

Everyone turned.

He pointed at the girl standing closest to Amelia.

“That's Lily.””

Daniel stared.

“How?””

Eli walked toward her.

“I saw her the night of the crash.””

“She was four.””

“I was four too.””

“What did you see?””

Eli looked at Lily.

“You were crying.””

Lily nodded.

“You held my hand.””

Daniel looked at the second girl.

“What about her?””

Eli shook his head.

“She was in the other room.””

Vanessa whispered, “The nursery.””

Eli nodded.

“Marcus took her.””

Daniel finally understood.

“The girl we raised…”

Victor interrupted.

“She was the replacement.””

Amelia stared at him.

“You put another child in my daughter's place.””

Victor nodded.

“You were supposed to believe Lily died.””

Daniel's hands began shaking.

“And the DNA test?””

Victor smiled.

“Both girls are identical twins.””

Amelia's eyes widened.

Twins.

The word seemed to unlock a memory buried beneath years of trauma.

The hospital.

The nurses.

The crying.

A second heartbeat she had once heard.

A doctor telling her:

*“There's another baby.””*

Amelia covered her mouth.

“I had twins.””

Victor nodded.

“You did.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You never knew?””

“I was sedated.””

Victor's smile disappeared.

“We convinced you one child was enough.””

Amelia's face hardened.

“You stole my daughter.””

“Yes.””

“You stole three years from her.””

“Yes.””

“You stole three years from me.””

Victor stared at her.

“Yes.””

She stepped toward him.

“And you thought I would forgive you?””

“No.””

Victor reached into his coat.

Harris tightened his grip on Marcus.

“Don't move.””

Victor removed a folded document.

He dropped it.

“Forgiveness was never part of the plan.””

Daniel looked down.

“What is that?””

“The trust.””

Harris picked it up.

His eyes widened.

“This transfers everything.””

Victor smiled.

“To Lily.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

“Because she is the legal heir.””

“And you?””

“I controlled the assets until she came of age.””

Daniel looked at Harris.

“You were trustee.””

Harris nodded.

“Under coercion.””

Victor laughed.

“Everyone was under coercion.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“No.””

Victor looked at her.

“No?””

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“I'm done being afraid of you.””

She pulled out her phone.

Victor's expression changed.

“What did you do?””

“I recorded everything.””

Marcus stopped struggling.

Harris stared at her.

“You recorded him?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Every confession.””

Victor lunged.

Harris knocked him to the ground.

The phone skidded across the floor.

Sirens suddenly wailed outside.

Real ones.

Multiple vehicles.

Victor stared toward the entrance.

“How?””

Harris smiled.

“I sent the evidence to federal investigators before we came here.””

Victor looked furious.

“You had no signal.””

“I didn't need one.””

Harris pointed toward the satellite communications unit on his belt.

“You forgot what century we're in.””

Within minutes, officers flooded the warehouse.

Marcus was handcuffed.

Victor was arrested.

Vanessa surrendered herself for the fraud and conspiracy charges.

She looked at Daniel before being led away.

“I know you hate me.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I don't know what I feel.””

She nodded.

“That’s fair.””

Then she looked at Amelia.

“I'm sorry.””

Amelia said nothing.

She didn't owe her forgiveness.

Outside, dawn was beginning to lighten the sky.

Lily stood between Amelia and Daniel.

The other little girl stood beside her.

They held hands.

Daniel crouched in front of them.

“Which one of you wants the first birthday wish next year?””

Both girls laughed through their tears.

Lily looked at Amelia.

“I already know mine.””

“What?”” Amelia asked.

Lily smiled.

“I want everyone to stay.””

Amelia pulled both girls into her arms.

Daniel wrapped his arms around them.

For the first time in three years, there was no pretending.

No hidden camera.

No forged record.

No false death.

Only a mother holding both her daughters beneath a brightening morning sky.

Later, investigators would recover the original hospital records.

The real death certificate.

The hidden ledger.

The payments.

The photographs.

The recordings.

Everything Victor and Marcus thought they had buried.

And the truth about Amelia's disappearance finally became undeniable.

She had not abandoned her family.

She had been erased from it.

But there was one final piece.

Three days after the arrests, Daniel sat at the dining table with Amelia.

The birthday cake had been replaced.

Seven fresh candles stood in front of Lily.

The two girls leaned over them together.

Daniel smiled.

“What did you wish for?””

Lily looked at him.

Then at Amelia.

She smiled.

“This time…”

She glanced at her sister.

“…I wished for us to never be separated again.””

Amelia kissed her forehead.

Daniel reached for the lighter.

And on the table, beside the new cake, sat the battered dashcam.

The little red light was finally gone.

May you like

Because the truth had already been recorded.

And this time, nobody could erase it.
