Chapter 5: Room 317

Daniel read the message twice.

Then a third time.

His thumb tightened around Harris's phone until his knuckles turned white.

*COME TO ROOM 317 ALONE, DANIEL. OR LILY LEARNS WHY HER MOTHER REALLY DISAPPEARED.*

“Give me the phone,” Harris said.

Daniel didn't move.

“What does Lily have to do with this?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel looked at Amelia.

She was already crying.

Not because she was afraid for herself.

Because the threat had finally reached the one place she had spent three years trying to protect.

Daniel handed the phone back.

“I’m going.””

“No,” Amelia said.

He looked at her.

“They asked for me.””

“They want you isolated.””

“I know.””

“Then why would you go?””

“Because they think I’ll come alone.””

Amelia's eyes hardened.

“And?””

“I won’t.””

Harris stepped between them.

“You can't improvise this.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Then stop me.””

“I will.””

“Try.””

Harris's jaw clenched.

“Daniel, listen carefully. Whoever sent that message knows about Room 317. They know Lily's name.

They know your family history. This isn't some random threat.””

“I know exactly what it is.””

“What?””

“Leverage.””

Amelia stepped closer.

“They're using Lily to control you.””

Daniel nodded.

“And if they know she matters to me, they know she matters to you.””

“They know too much,” Amelia whispered.

A silence settled between them.

Then Lily spoke.

“Are you leaving again?””

Daniel turned.

She stood near the cake, her cheeks wet, her birthday dress wrinkled from everything that had happened.

He crouched immediately.

“No.””

“You were going to.””

“I have to do something.””

“Like what?””

Daniel glanced at Amelia.

Then back at his daughter.

“I have to make sure nobody can hurt you.””

Lily shook her head.

“People always say that before something bad happens.””

The words struck him.

Daniel swallowed.

“You're right.””

Lily blinked.

“You're right,” he repeated.

“So this time I'm going to tell you the truth.””

Amelia watched him carefully.

Daniel took Lily's hands.

“Someone is trying to scare us.””

“Why?””

“I don't know yet.””

“Are they coming back?””

“I don't know.””

Lily's lower lip trembled.

“But your mom and I are here.””

Amelia knelt beside them.

“Yes.””

Lily looked at both of them.

“Then don't leave me alone.””

“We won't,” Amelia said.

Harris cleared his throat.

“Mrs. Carter is already outside.””

Lily shook her head.

“I don't want Mrs. Carter.””

Amelia touched her hair.

“She'll be with you the whole time.””

“Where are you going?””

Amelia looked at Daniel.

He answered.

“We're going to find out who did this.””

Harris immediately said, “We're going to the motel.””

Daniel turned.

“All of us.””

Harris shook his head.

“No. The message specifically said alone.””

“Which means they expect me to obey.””

“And if they see three cars?””

Daniel smiled bitterly.

“Then they'll know they made a mistake.””

Vanessa had been silent throughout the exchange.

Now she spoke.

“I know the motel.””

Everyone looked at her.

“You've been there?””

She shook her head.

“Not personally.””

“Then how do you know it?””

“I saw the address.””

“Where?””

“In Marcus's office.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“You were in his office?””

“Once.””

“When?””

“Three years ago.””

“What were you doing there?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“I was looking for him.””

“Why?””

“Because he'd stopped answering my calls.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You and Marcus had a relationship?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“No.””

The pause before the answer was too long.

Amelia noticed.

“You're lying.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I wasn't in love with Marcus.””

“That wasn't my question.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I was afraid of him.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Then why protect him?””

“Because he had something over me.””

“What?””

She looked toward Lily.

“I can't say.””

Amelia's voice turned cold.

“Say it.””

“I can't.””

“Then you aren't helping us.””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“What do you want from me?””

“The truth.””

“I've been trying to survive.””

“So have I.””

Vanessa looked at her for a long moment.

Then she whispered:

“Marcus knows what happened to your father.””

Daniel's face changed.

“What about my father?””

“Not what I told you.””

“You said he was dead.””

“I said what I was told.””

“By whom?””

Vanessa looked toward Harris.

Then at Amelia.

Then finally at Daniel.

“By Marcus.””

Daniel took a step closer.

“You knew my father might still be alive.””

“Yes.””

“For three years?””

Vanessa began crying.

“I didn't know if he was alive. I knew Marcus believed he was.””

“That makes no sense.””

“It didn't make sense to me either.””

“What did Marcus say?””

Vanessa wiped her cheek.

“He said your father had made a deal years ago.””

“With whom?””

“I don't know.””

“What kind of deal?””

“I don't know.””

Daniel's voice broke.

“You keep saying you don't know.””

“Because every time I learned something, somebody threatened me.””

“Who?””

“Marcus.””

Harris stepped in.

“That's enough.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“No. It isn't.””

She turned to Daniel.

“You want to know why Amelia disappeared?””

Amelia's body went rigid.

“Vanessa…”

“I saw your father.””

Daniel stared.

“Where?””

“At the warehouse.””

“When?””

“Three years ago.””

“You said three nights ago.””

“I saw him three years ago too.””

Daniel's face drained.

“What was he doing?””

“Talking to Marcus.””

“About Amelia?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Vanessa looked toward Lily.

“About you.””

Daniel went still.

“What about me?””

“He said you were becoming a liability.””

The room seemed to tilt.

Daniel whispered, “Why?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Harris did.

“Because you refused to sign something.””

Daniel turned sharply.

“Sign what?””

Harris removed a thin folder from inside his coat.

“I found this in an old case file.””

Daniel took it.

The first page was a contract.

His name appeared at the bottom.

But the signature wasn't his.

Daniel stared at it.

“This is forged.””

“I know.””

“What is it?””

“A transfer agreement.””

“For what?””

Harris pointed to a paragraph.

“Your shares in the logistics company.””

Daniel's eyes widened.

“They tried to take my company?””

“Not exactly.””

Harris turned the page.

“Read the final line.””

Daniel did.

His face went blank.

Then he read it again.

The agreement transferred ownership of the company to a private trust.

A trust named:

*LILY AMELIA REED FAMILY TRUST.*

Daniel looked up.

“Why would they put it in Lily's name?””

Amelia's face had gone pale.

“Because they needed control without making it look like control.””

Daniel stared at the paperwork.

“Who was the trustee?””

Harris didn't answer.

Daniel slowly looked at him.

“No.””

Harris's silence confirmed it.

Daniel's voice became barely audible.

“You.””

Harris nodded.

“I was.””

Amelia stepped backward.

“You were involved?””

“No.””

“You held the trust.””

“I was ordered to.””

“By whom?””

Harris looked at Daniel.

“Your father.””

Daniel's eyes widened.

“My father was the one who appointed you?””

“Yes.””

“Ten years ago?””

“Yes.””

“But he was dead.””

Harris lowered his voice.

“That is what everyone was told.””

Daniel turned toward the window.

Outside, Mrs. Carter was waiting near the sidewalk with her car.

He stared at the reflection of his own face in the glass.

For years, he'd believed his father died.

For years, he had believed Amelia died.

For years, he'd trusted the version of events handed to him by police, family, lawyers, doctors.

Now every piece was collapsing.

Amelia came to stand beside him.

“What are you thinking?””

“That maybe Amelia was never the first person they tried to erase.””

She looked at him.

“Who was?””

“Me.””

Amelia's eyes narrowed.

Daniel turned.

“Think about it.””

He pointed to the contract.

“They needed my company. They needed your disappearance. They needed Lily under Vanessa's care.””

Amelia whispered, “And they needed you frightened enough to cooperate.””

“I did cooperate.””

“You didn't know what you were doing.””

“I still did it.””

Amelia reached for his hand.

He looked down at it.

Three years ago, he would have taken it without hesitation.

Now he did.

Her fingers trembled.

“We don't have time to punish ourselves.””

Daniel nodded.

Harris checked his watch.

“Room 317.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“Don't go through the front entrance.””

Everyone turned.

“Why?”” Daniel asked.

“There's a service corridor.””

“How do you know?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Because Marcus showed it to me.””

“When?””

“After the crash.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Why would he show you?””

“Because he wanted me to see what happens when you cross him.””

Amelia's voice became icy.

“What happens?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“He took me downstairs.””

“To the warehouse?””

“Yes.””

“What did you see?””

Vanessa began shaking.

“People.””

“How many?””

“I don't know.””

“Were they alive?””

A tear rolled down Vanessa's cheek.

“Yes.””

Amelia's stomach turned.

“What happened to them?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“They were witnesses.””

Harris's expression hardened.

“Witnesses to what?””

Vanessa whispered:

“The night Amelia didn't die.””

Everyone stared at her.

Amelia stepped closer.

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“The crash was staged.””

“We know.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don't.””

She looked directly into Amelia's eyes.

“They didn't want to kill you.””

Amelia's breathing stopped.

“What?””

“They needed everyone to believe you were dead.””

“Why?””

“Because you had seen something.””

“What?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“The second car wasn't following you.””

Amelia frowned.

“Then what was it doing?””

Vanessa's voice dropped to a whisper.

“It was carrying Lily.””

Daniel went completely still.

“What?””

Vanessa shook her head rapidly.

“Not your Lily.””

Amelia stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“The child they were moving that night…”

She stopped.

Her eyes filled with terror.

Then she said:

“They were moving another little girl who looked exactly like Lily.””

No one moved.

Daniel couldn't breathe.

Amelia's face emptied of color.

Harris whispered, “That's impossible.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I saw her.””

Daniel's voice cracked.

“Where is she now?””

Vanessa looked toward the front door.

“I don't know.””

A phone began ringing.

Not Daniel's.

Not Harris's.

Vanessa slowly reached inside her handbag.

Her hand was shaking.

She pulled out an old black phone.

The screen showed one incoming call.

*DAD*

Daniel stared at it.

“My father?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

The phone continued ringing.

Then a message appeared beneath the caller's name.

*ROOM 317. BRING AMELIA. COME BEFORE MIDNIGHT.*

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

Her lips barely moved.

“He knows she came back.””

Amelia stepped toward the phone.

Before she could touch it, the screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

It showed Lily standing beside Mrs. Carter's car outside the house.

Taken seconds ago.

May you like

Underneath it were five words:

*SHE'S ALREADY BEEN TAKEN.*
