Chapter 9: The Child Who Knew the Truth

The paper slipped from Amelia’s fingers.

She stared at the words as though they had been written in a language she had never seen before.

*LILY REED DIED THREE YEARS AGO.*

Daniel was standing beside her, completely motionless.

“No,” he whispered.

Amelia looked up.

“No.””

Harris took the page.

His eyes moved across the report.

“There's more.””

Daniel snatched it back.

At the bottom was a second line.

*DNA MATCH: 99.998% — MATERNAL RELATIONSHIP CONFIRMED.*

Daniel's face went blank.

“That isn't possible.””

Amelia's hands shook.

“She’s my daughter.””

Harris looked toward the dark hallway.

“The report says the child whose sample was tested is biologically related to Amelia.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Then that's Lily.””

Harris shook his head.

“Not necessarily.””

Daniel stared at him.

“What do you mean, not necessarily?””

“Someone can have Lily's DNA without being Lily.””

The realization hit Amelia.

“The other girl.””

Harris nodded.

“The one Marcus called the replacement.””

Daniel's breathing became unsteady.

“Then where is the real Lily?””

Nobody answered.

A distant door slammed somewhere deeper in the warehouse.

Daniel ran toward the sound.

“Lily!””

Amelia followed.

Harris grabbed his radio.

“Marcus took the child. We need units at the north and west entrances.””

Static answered.

Then nothing.

Harris frowned.

“Dispatch?””

More static.

He looked at the radio.

“They've jammed the signal.””

Daniel reached the end of the corridor.

A narrow passage split into three directions.

On the left, a steel door.

In the center, stairs leading downward.

On the right, a hallway marked *ARCHIVE*.

Amelia stopped.

“Archive.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What's there?””

“Records.””

Harris nodded.

“The identities.””

Daniel pointed toward the stairs.

“That's where Marcus went.””

“No,” Amelia said.

She pointed toward the archive.

“He wanted us to think that.””

Daniel looked at her.

“How do you know?””

“Because that's what my father would do.””

Harris stared at her.

“You've figured out how they think.””

“I've had three years to.””

She started down the archive corridor.

Daniel followed.

Harris stayed behind them for a moment, listening.

Then he noticed something.

A faint child's humming.

Coming from behind the steel door.

He turned.

The sound stopped.

“Harris?””

Amelia called from the corridor.

He looked back.

The steel door moved slightly.

Not opening.

Closing.

Harris approached it.

He placed his hand on the handle.

Cold.

Locked.

Then he heard a whisper.

“Detective.””

He froze.

The voice came from inside.

“Don't let him find me.””

Harris's eyes widened.

He pulled his weapon.

“Who's in there?””

A small voice answered.

“Lily.””

Harris's heart slammed against his ribs.

He looked toward Daniel and Amelia.

They were already out of sight.

He whispered, “Are you alone?””

“No.””

“Who is with you?””

“I don't know.””

Harris tried the handle.

“Step away from the door.””

“I can't.””

“Why?””

“They're sleeping.””

Harris went still.

“Who is sleeping?””

“The babies.””

He stared at the door.

Then slowly looked down.

There were scratches around the lock.

Tiny scratches.

As though small hands had been trying to get out.

Harris radioed again.

Nothing.

He kicked the door.

Once.

Twice.

The lock snapped.

The door flew inward.

The room beyond was enormous.

Rows of small cribs filled the darkness.

Most were empty.

Some still had blankets inside.

At the far end sat a little girl.

Seven years old.

Dark curls.

Pink shirt.

Bare feet.

Her eyes locked onto Harris.

He lowered his weapon.

“Lily?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

He stepped closer.

“Where's the other girl?””

The child pointed behind him.

Harris turned.

A monitor mounted on the wall flickered to life.

A live image appeared.

Daniel and Amelia were walking through the archive.

The camera angle was above them.

Harris understood immediately.

“They've been watching us.””

Lily stood.

“That's what they do.””

“How long have you been here?””

“Since tonight.””

“Who brought you?””

“Uncle Marcus.””

“Where's your mom?””

The girl looked confused.

“I don't know.””

“What's your mother's name?””

The child hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“Amelia.””

Harris stared at her.

He crouched.

“Lily, look at me.””

She did.

“What's your father's name?””

“Daniel.””

Harris's throat tightened.

“Do you remember your birthday?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“October seventeenth.””

Harris froze.

That was Lily's birthday.

The same date written on the records.

He reached for his phone.

No signal.

“Do you know who the other girl is?””

The child nodded.

“She is my sister.””

Harris stopped.

“Your sister?””

“Yes.””

“What's her name?””

Lily shook her head.

“They never let us say it.””

“Why?””

“Because names make people real.””

Harris felt a chill.

“Who told you that?””

“Grandpa.””

Harris looked at the monitor.

The image had changed.

Marcus was standing behind Daniel and Amelia.

They hadn't noticed him.

Harris grabbed Lily.

“We have to go.””

He pulled her toward the door.

A loud click echoed through the room.

The door locked itself.

Harris spun.

On the monitor, Marcus looked directly into the camera.

Then he smiled.

His lips moved.

Harris couldn't hear him.

But Lily could.

She whispered:

“He said you came too late.””

In the archive corridor, Daniel stopped.

There were files everywhere.

Wall to wall.

Floor to ceiling.

Names printed on thick white labels.

*REED.*

*HARRIS.*

*VALE.*

*CARTER.*

He looked at Amelia.

“Carter?””

She shook her head.

“Mrs. Carter?””

Daniel pulled the folder.

Inside was a photograph of the elderly woman who had lived next door for twelve years.

Below it was a police document.

*SURVEILLANCE CONTACT — LILY REED.*

Daniel's stomach dropped.

“She was watching Lily.””

Amelia grabbed the file.

There were dozens of photographs.

Lily at school.

Lily at the park.

Lily riding a bicycle.

Lily sleeping.

Amelia's hand flew to her mouth.

“She was part of it.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Look.””

Amelia pointed to a signature.

*Rebecca Carter.*

Underneath:

*PAID MONTHLY.*

Daniel's face hardened.

“She betrayed us.””

“Maybe.””

He turned to her.

“What do you mean maybe?””

“Look at the payment dates.””

Daniel scanned them.

The payments stopped three years ago.

Exactly after the crash.

Amelia whispered, “Maybe she was trying to protect Lily.””

Daniel's eyes moved to the photographs.

One showed Mrs. Carter standing beside the hospital nursery.

Another showed her holding a newborn baby.

Another showed her talking to Vanessa.

Daniel stared.

“Vanessa knew.””

Amelia found another photograph.

Her own face.

Taken the night Lily was born.

She stared at the image.

Then noticed the timestamp.

*2:14 a.m.*

She remembered that night.

At 2:14 a.m., she had been asleep.

Her baby was supposed to be in her room.

But the photograph showed someone entering the nursery.

The person carrying the infant wore hospital scrubs.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Can you see the face?””

“No.””

“Zoom in.””

He used his phone.

The photograph sharpened.

The nurse turned slightly.

The face became visible.

Daniel stopped breathing.

“It can't be.””

Amelia looked.

Her eyes widened.

The nurse was Vanessa.

Amelia dropped the photograph.

“No.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You were there.””

Vanessa's voice came from the hallway.

“I was.””

They spun around.

She stood twenty feet away.

Alone.

Her face was soaked with tears.

Daniel stepped toward her.

“You helped them.””

“Yes.””

Amelia's voice was cold.

“You took my baby.””

“No.””

“You were in that nursery.””

“Yes.””

“You switched the children.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I switched one.””

“Which one?””

“The other baby.””

Daniel stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Your daughter was never taken.””

Amelia's heart pounded.

“Then who's missing?””

Vanessa looked toward the monitor at the end of the hallway.

“The child who was supposed to die.””

Amelia frowned.

“I don't understand.””

Vanessa walked closer.

“Your mother had a secret.””

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“What secret?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“She wasn't your biological mother.””

Amelia stared.

The world seemed to tilt.

“No.””

“She adopted you.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“What are you saying?””

“That your family has been hiding this for generations.””

Amelia shook her head.

“My mother gave birth to me.””

“She told you that.””

“She showed me photographs.””

“Photographs can lie.””

Amelia stepped toward her.

“Then who were my parents?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I don't know.””

“Who does?””

Vanessa looked toward the ceiling.

“Your father-in-law.””

Amelia felt sick.

Daniel whispered, “My father?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He found out who you really were.””

“And?””

“He realized Lily had inherited something from you.””

“What?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Amelia grabbed her arm.

“What?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“The ledger wasn't about money.””

Daniel went still.

“Then what was it about?””

Vanessa opened her eyes.

“Children.””

Silence.

“Children with inherited access.””

“To what?””

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“Accounts.””

Daniel frowned.

“What accounts?””

“Trusts. Properties. International holdings. Everything your grandfather created.””

Amelia shook her head.

“That still doesn't explain why they wanted Lily.””

“It does.””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“Lily was the legal heir.””

Daniel stared.

“To the entire family estate.””

“But she was seven.””

“Exactly.””

Amelia whispered, “They needed control until she was old enough.””

Vanessa nodded.

“That was the plan.””

“And me?””

“You were the obstacle.””

Daniel looked sick.

“You tried to erase my wife for an inheritance?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not me.””

“Then who?””

Vanessa looked toward the end of the corridor.

Her expression changed.

“Listen.””

Footsteps.

Slow.

Approaching.

Vanessa whispered:

“That's your father.””

Daniel turned.

A shadow stretched across the floor.

The older man's voice came from the darkness.

“You've finally found the records.””

Daniel stepped in front of Amelia.

His father emerged.

But he wasn't alone.

He had Marcus beside him.

And Marcus was holding Lily's hand.

Daniel's heart stopped.

“Lily.””

The child ran toward him.

Marcus released her.

Daniel caught her and pulled her into his arms.

“Baby.””

Lily buried her face against his chest.

“You came.””

Daniel kissed her hair.

“I'm here.””

Amelia knelt beside them.

“Are you hurt?””

Lily shook her head.

“No.””

Then she looked past Amelia.

At Vanessa.

At Marcus.

At the old man.

Her face became frightened.

“Mom…”

Amelia touched her cheek.

“What?””

Lily whispered:

“That's not Grandpa.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Lily pointed at the older man.

“Grandpa died before you were born.””

The old man's smile disappeared.

Daniel slowly turned toward him.

His father stared at Lily.

Then at Marcus.

And for the first time, Marcus looked afraid.

The girl continued.

“I remember him.””

Daniel's voice was shaking.

“Then who is that?””

Lily pointed again.

“He's the man who used to visit the nursery.””

Harris suddenly appeared at the far end of the corridor, dragging the steel-room door open behind him.

He was carrying the other little girl.

He shouted:

“Daniel!””

The second child saw the first.

The two girls stared at each other.

Then both began crying.

Amelia looked between them.

The resemblance was impossible.

But one thing was different.

The little girl in Daniel's arms had a tiny crescent-shaped birthmark behind her left ear.

The other girl had the same mark.

On the right.

Vanessa whispered:

“They're twins.””

The old man backed away.

Daniel's voice became a roar.

“You told me there was only one baby.””

His father didn't answer.

Marcus stepped backward.

Harris raised his gun.

“Everyone stay where they are.””

The older man suddenly smiled.

“You still don't understand.””

He pointed at the twins.

“Neither of them is the child I came here for.””

Amelia stared.

“Then who is?””

May you like

The lights went black.

And somewhere in the warehouse, a little boy began to cry.
