Chapter 7: The Warehouse of Lost Names

The warehouse stood beyond the edge of the city, where the streetlights thinned and abandoned factories rose behind rusted fences.

Daniel killed the headlights before they reached the gate.

For a moment, the four of them sat in darkness.

Then Amelia whispered, “There.””

A security lamp flickered above a side entrance.

The same entrance Vanessa had described.

Harris checked the road behind them.

“Everyone out.””

Daniel opened his door.

Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.

“Wait.””

He turned.

“What?””

Her face had gone pale.

“When I was here before, there was a red door inside.””

Daniel frowned.

“A red door?””

“Yes. Don't open it.””

“Why?””

“I don't know.””

Harris looked at her.

“You saw something behind it.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I heard something.””

“What?””

“A child crying.””

Amelia stared at her.

“You heard a child?””

Vanessa nodded.

“But Marcus wouldn't let me near the door.””

Daniel looked toward the warehouse.

“Then that's exactly where we're going.””

Vanessa caught his arm harder.

“Daniel, listen to me. Marcus doesn't scare people by accident. If he wanted us here, there is a reason.””

Daniel removed her hand.

“Then let's find out what it is.””

They crossed the empty lot.

The wind pushed scraps of paper across the asphalt.

Harris forced the side door open.

A metal groan echoed through the building.

Inside, the warehouse smelled of dust, oil, and something chemical.

Emergency lights cast a weak yellow glow along the concrete walls.

Rows of shelving stretched into darkness.

Daniel stepped in first.

Amelia stayed beside him.

Vanessa followed close behind Harris.

“Where?”” Daniel asked.

Vanessa pointed.

“Down there.””

They moved between the shelves.

Every few feet, Daniel saw boxes stacked with dates.

2019.

2020.

2021.

Names had been written on the sides.

Some had been crossed out.

Some had been replaced with new names.

Daniel stopped at one.

A white label read:

*LILY REED — FILE CLOSED*

Underneath it, someone had written:

*ALTERNATE IDENTITY — 04.12*

Daniel's stomach tightened.

He pulled the box free.

“Don't,” Harris said.

Daniel ignored him.

He opened the lid.

Inside were photographs.

Dozens of them.

Children.

School records.

Birth certificates.

Medical forms.

Passport photographs.

Amelia took one.

Her hand began shaking.

“This is Lily.””

Daniel looked at the photograph.

It was his daughter.

Taken at age four.

Same dress.

Same missing front tooth.

He reached for another.

It showed Lily at five.

Then six.

Then seven.

He stared at the dates.

“These are real.””

Harris nodded.

“Some are.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Some?””

Harris picked up a file.

“Look at the medical records.””

Daniel scanned the pages.

Blood type.

Vaccination history.

Emergency contact.

He froze.

“This blood type is wrong.””

Amelia took the paper.

“What?””

Daniel pointed.

“Lily's blood type is O-positive.””

“This says A-negative.””

Amelia stared at the page.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“We never gave anyone this information.””

“Maybe the hospital made a mistake.””

“No.””

Daniel's voice was certain.

“I've seen her medical records.””

Harris pulled another file from the box.

“This is what they changed.””

He placed it on top of the first.

The same child's name.

The same birthday.

The same hospital.

Different blood type.

Different mother's name.

Different fingerprint card.

Amelia whispered, “They manufactured an identity.””

Harris nodded.

“For the girl they called Replacement.””

Daniel looked toward Vanessa.

“You knew.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not all of it.””

“You knew enough.””

“I knew Marcus was changing records.””

“For whom?””

“I didn't know.””

Amelia pulled another photograph from the box.

She stopped breathing.

It showed her.

Standing beside Lily's hospital crib.

But there was another woman in the background.

A woman Amelia recognized.

Her own mother.

Amelia's fingers tightened around the photograph.

“My mother.””

Daniel looked at her.

“She died eight years ago.””

Amelia shook her head slowly.

“This photo was taken the night Lily was born.””

Harris looked at the timestamp.

“That's impossible.””

Amelia pointed to the woman in the background.

“That isn't my mother.””

Daniel stared.

The woman had the same hairstyle.

Same face shape.

But she was younger.

And standing beside her was a man.

Marcus.

Daniel's blood ran cold.

“Why was my brother at the hospital?””

Vanessa whispered, “He was there that night.””

Daniel turned sharply.

“You said you didn't know him.””

“I never said that.””

“You told me Marcus didn't meet Amelia until after the wedding.””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“I was told to say that.””

“By whom?””

Vanessa looked deeper into the warehouse.

“Your father.””

Daniel shook his head.

“My father has been dead for ten years.””

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“Then why do I keep seeing him?””

A metallic sound echoed from somewhere nearby.

Clang.

Everyone froze.

Harris raised his weapon.

“Stay behind me.””

Another sound.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Coming from deeper inside.

Daniel whispered, “Marcus.””

Harris moved forward.

They reached the end of the aisle.

A red door stood there.

Amelia stared at it.

Vanessa's breathing became ragged.

“That’s it.””

Harris looked at her.

“The door?””

She nodded.

“The one I told you about.””

A child's voice came from behind it.

“Mom?””

Amelia's entire body went rigid.

Daniel looked at her.

The voice came again.

“Mom, are you there?””

Amelia stepped forward.

“Lily?””

Vanessa grabbed her.

“Don't!””

The voice behind the door began crying.

“Mom, please.””

Amelia pulled free.

“That sounds like her.””

Daniel reached for the handle.

Harris stopped him.

“Wait.””

He crouched.

A thin strip of light showed beneath the door.

Then something small slipped through the gap.

A pink birthday hair clip.

Lily's.

Daniel's face collapsed.

“Open it.””

Harris slowly turned the handle.

The door unlocked.

It swung inward.

A small room appeared.

A single chair.

A table.

A camera.

And a little girl sitting on the floor.

She wore Lily's birthday dress.

Daniel stumbled inside.

“Lily!””

The child looked up.

“Daddy!””

He dropped to his knees and pulled her into his arms.

She sobbed against his chest.

“You came.””

Amelia fell beside them.

“Baby…”

The girl reached for her.

“Mom.””

Amelia hugged her.

Daniel shut his eyes.

For several seconds, none of them moved.

Then Harris looked around.

“Where's the other girl?””

The child stopped crying.

“What other girl?””

Daniel looked at her.

“The girl who was with you.””

Her face changed.

“I wasn't with anyone.””

Vanessa whispered, “She's lying.””

The girl's eyes darted toward Vanessa.

Then back to Daniel.

A strange calm came over her face.

“You're not my daddy.””

Daniel froze.

Amelia slowly released her.

“What did you say?””

The girl looked at Daniel.

“You're not my daddy.””

Daniel's face drained.

“No.””

The girl pointed toward a mirror on the wall.

“That's my daddy.””

Everyone turned.

A second doorway stood behind them.

In the mirror's reflection, a man was visible.

Silver hair.

Tall.

Standing perfectly still.

Daniel turned.

The doorway was empty.

He looked back at the mirror.

The man was still there.

His father.

Daniel's legs nearly gave out.

“Dad?””

The man's mouth moved.

But no sound came through the room.

Then the camera on the table turned on.

A red light blinked.

The monitor came alive.

The screen showed a live feed.

The silver-haired man stood somewhere else in the warehouse.

He looked directly into the camera.

Then he smiled.

“Hello, Daniel.””

Daniel backed away.

“This isn't real.””

His father spoke again through the monitor.

“You've spent ten years believing I was dead.””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“Why?””

“Because dead men are easier to trust.””

Amelia stared at the screen.

“You helped them.””

The older man looked at her.

“I protected this family.””

“You tried to kill me.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I prevented your death from becoming something worse.””

Amelia's voice rose.

“You staged my murder.””

“I staged your disappearance.””

“For what?””

The man glanced toward the little girl.

“She is the reason.””

Daniel looked at the child.

The girl's face was terrified.

His father continued.

“Three years ago, Amelia discovered the ledger.””

“I know.””

“No, Daniel. You don't.””

The older man's expression hardened.

“She discovered who Lily really is.””

Daniel stared.

“She is my daughter.””

The man smiled sadly.

“That is what you were meant to believe.””

Amelia stood.

“Stop playing games.””

He looked at her.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

“Then ask your husband what happened the night Lily was born.””

Daniel's face tightened.

“I already know what happened.””

“No.””

The older man's voice became colder.

“You know what the hospital told you.””

He leaned toward the camera.

“You don't know what happened in the room next door.””

Amelia looked at Daniel.

“What room?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know.””

His father continued.

“There were two mothers.””

Silence.

“Two babies.””

Daniel's expression changed.

“And one mistake.””

The monitor suddenly went black.

Harris turned toward the doorway.

“Someone's coming.””

Footsteps echoed through the warehouse.

Amelia pulled the little girl behind her.

Daniel stood.

“Who's there?””

A man's voice answered from the darkness.

“Me.””

Marcus stepped into the aisle.

He was holding a handgun.

Vanessa stumbled backward.

“Marcus…”

He looked at her.

“You really should have stayed quiet.””

Harris raised his weapon.

“Drop it.””

Marcus smiled.

“You're too late, Detective.””

He looked past him.

At Amelia.

Then at the little girl.

Then at Daniel.

“You finally brought everyone together.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You kidnapped my daughter.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

He pointed at the child.

“I kidnapped the wrong girl.””

Daniel's blood ran cold.

May you like

Marcus smiled.

“Now let's see if you can figure out which one is yours before midnight.””
