Chapter 3: The Photograph Taken From Inside
Daniel didn't touch the photograph.
He didn't have to.
The image of Lily sleeping in her bedroom sat in the middle of the birthday table like a loaded gun.
Her pink blanket was pulled to her chin.
Her stuffed rabbit rested beside her.
A small night-light shaped like a moon glowed on the dresser.
And in the corner of the photograph, barely visible through the bedroom window, was the reflection of whoever had taken it.
Daniel's breathing stopped.
“Where did you get that?””
Detective Harris kept his eyes on him.
“You need to come outside with me.””
“No.””
Harris looked toward Amelia.
“She's in danger.””
Amelia stepped between him and Lily.
“She was in danger because of people like you.””
Harris's jaw tightened.
“Amelia, you have no idea what's happening.””
“I know exactly what's happening.””
“You disappeared for three years.””
“Because somebody tried to kill me.””
“And now you're back.””
“Yes.””
“Which means they know you're alive.””
Amelia raised the broken dashcam.
“They already knew.””
Harris looked at the device.
For a fraction of a second, fear crossed his face.
Then it vanished.
Daniel caught it.
“You're scared of that camera.””
Harris didn't answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
“What is on it?””
“Something you were never supposed to see.””
“Then why did you come here?””
“To keep you alive.””
Daniel laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“You expect me to believe that?””
Harris's voice dropped.
“You shouldn't believe anybody tonight.””
Vanessa moved toward him.
“Detective, please tell him this is some kind of misunderstanding.””
Harris looked at her.
He said nothing.
That silence did more damage than any accusation.
Vanessa's face hardened.
“You know me.””
“I know what your file says.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means I wouldn't use the word know.””
Daniel stared at both of them.
“Enough.””
He slapped a hand onto the photograph.
“Who took this?””
Harris finally answered.
“Someone who had a key.””
Daniel's head snapped up.
“A key to this house?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
“You're a detective.””
“I said I don't know.””
Daniel's voice rose.
“Then find out!””
Harris stepped toward him.
“I'm trying.””
“No. You're hiding something.””
“I am.””
The admission stunned the room.
Harris looked at Lily.
Then Amelia.
Then Daniel.
“I've been hiding something for three years.””
Vanessa whispered, “Detective…”
He turned sharply.
“Don't.””
She stopped.
Harris reached into his coat again.
This time he pulled out a clear evidence sleeve.
Inside was a brass house key.
Daniel stared at it.
“That was in my safe.””
His voice became barely audible.
“I changed that lock.””
Harris nodded.
“Three times.””
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
Lily's bedroom was upstairs.
“You had access?””
“No.””
“Then how did someone get this?””
Harris placed the sleeve on the table.
“That's what I need you to tell me.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't know.””
Amelia looked at the key.
Then at Vanessa.
Vanessa backed away.
“Stop looking at me.””
Amelia didn't blink.
“You have one too.””
“No.””
“You gave Daniel a spare when you moved in.””
“That was years ago.””
“And?””
“I threw it away.””
Daniel turned.
“When?””
“I don't remember.””
“You don't remember throwing away a key to my house?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with anger.
“You're really doing this now?””
“Answer me.””
“I don't know!””
Her voice cracked across the room.
Lily jumped.
Amelia immediately put a hand on her shoulder.
“It's okay.””
Vanessa noticed Lily shrinking away from her.
Something in her expression broke.
For the first time, she looked less cold.
More desperate.
“Lily,” she said softly, “I would never hurt you.””
Lily stared at her.
“Did you hurt Mom?””
Vanessa went silent.
Daniel's face hardened.
“Answer her.””
“I didn't.””
Lily looked at Amelia.
“Did she?””
Amelia knelt.
“I don't know yet.””
That frightened Lily more than a simple yes.
She reached for Amelia's hand.
Harris watched them.
Then he said, “There is something else.””
He slid another photograph from his coat.
Daniel looked at it.
His own house appeared from the street.
Taken at night.
One upstairs window was illuminated.
The photograph was dated six months after Amelia's supposed death.
Daniel frowned.
“What's significant about this?””
“Look closer.””
Daniel lifted the photograph.
A vehicle was parked two houses down.
Black SUV.
Same model as the one in Amelia's earlier photograph.
Daniel's blood went cold.
“That's the second car.””
Amelia nodded.
“Yes.””
Vanessa turned away.
Harris said, “We've been tracking it for years.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because every officer who got close to the case was transferred.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Transferred?””
“Or threatened.””
Amelia looked at Harris.
“Then why are you still here?””
He met her eyes.
“Because I was afraid of the wrong person.””
The dining room fell silent again.
Daniel looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Harris didn't answer immediately.
Then he pointed at the police document Amelia had opened.
“The inventory was altered.””
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“How?””
“The original report listed two vehicles.””
Amelia nodded.
“But the copy you have says one.””
Daniel looked down.
“So someone changed the report.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Harris looked directly at him.
“Someone inside the department.””
Vanessa exhaled.
“This is unbelievable.””
Harris ignored her.
“Three years ago, somebody wanted Amelia's disappearance classified as a fatal accident before the investigation even started.””
Daniel stared at Amelia.
“Why?””
Amelia swallowed.
“Because I found something.””
“What?””
She looked toward Lily.
Then closed her eyes.
“I found a ledger.””
Harris stiffened.
Daniel noticed.
“A ledger of what?””
“Payments.””
“To whom?””
“I don't know.””
“Amelia.””
“I didn't know what I was looking at.””
“Then why were they trying to kill you?””
“Because I started asking questions.””
Harris nodded.
“She found a name.””
Amelia looked at him.
“You know the name.””
“Yes.””
“Say it.””
Harris's expression tightened.
“Not here.””
“You came to my house.””
“And I came because somebody else is already inside it.””
Daniel went still.
“What?””
Harris pointed toward the ceiling.
“The photograph was taken from the upstairs hallway.””
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
Amelia gripped Lily's hand harder.
“You said the photographer had a key.””
“Yes.””
“Then they're still here.””
Harris reached for his radio.
“Everyone stays in this room.””
A sound came from upstairs.
A soft creak.
Everyone froze.
Lily whispered, “Someone's up there.””
Daniel stepped in front of her.
Harris drew his weapon.
“Daniel, stay back.””
Another creak.
Then the faint sound of a floorboard bending under weight.
Harris moved toward the stairs.
Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.
“Don't go up there.””
He looked at her hand.
“Let go.””
“You don't understand.””
“What don't I understand?””
Vanessa's voice trembled.
“The upstairs hallway doesn't have cameras.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Why do you know that?””
Vanessa released Harris.
“I helped install the security system.””
Daniel's expression changed.
“You said you never touched it.””
“I lied.””
“Why?””
“I wanted privacy!””
Another sound came from upstairs.
This time, a door slammed.
Harris ran.
Daniel followed.
Amelia pulled Lily close.
“Stay here.””
“No.””
“Lily, listen to me.””
“I don't want you to go.””
Amelia touched her daughter's cheek.
“I'll be right back.””
Lily grabbed her hand.
“Promise?””
Amelia looked at her.
This was the same word she had used before disappearing.
“I promise.””
She followed Daniel up the stairs.
The hallway was empty.
Lily's bedroom door stood open.
The curtains moved gently.
The window was locked.
Daniel entered first.
The bed was untouched.
Harris checked the closet.
Empty.
Bathroom.
Empty.
Under the bed.
Nothing.
Daniel turned in a circle.
“Then where did they go?””
Amelia entered.
She stopped immediately.
“What?””
Daniel looked at her.
“Amelia?””
She pointed.
The moon-shaped night-light on Lily's dresser was glowing.
Its cord wasn't plugged in.
Harris walked over.
He turned the lamp upside down.
Something rattled inside.
He looked at Amelia.
“You knew about this?””
“No.””
He twisted the casing.
A tiny memory card fell into his palm.
Daniel stared.
“What is that?””
Harris's face changed.
“Security footage.””
“From what?””
“Inside the house.””
Amelia's eyes narrowed.
“How?””
Harris looked toward the ceiling.
“Your smoke detector.””
Daniel stared upward.
“What?””
Harris pointed.
“It's not a smoke detector.””
He reached up and pulled the cover loose.
A miniature camera lens stared down at them.
Lily had been watched from inside her room.
For years.
Daniel stumbled backward.
“Who installed that?””
Amelia's voice was shaking.
“That's what I want to know.””
Harris inserted the memory card into a small reader.
A video appeared on his phone.
Static.
Then Lily's bedroom.
Empty.
A timestamp.
Two nights earlier.
Someone entered the room.
The figure wore a dark hoodie.
They approached Lily's sleeping bed.
Stopped.
Looked directly into the hidden camera.
Then slowly lowered the hood.
Daniel whispered, “No.””
Amelia stared at the screen.
She knew that face.
So did Daniel.
So did Harris.
The figure smiled at the camera.
And then spoke.
“Tell Amelia the truth, Daniel.””
The video cut to black.
Daniel stood frozen.
Amelia turned toward him.
“What truth?””
He couldn't speak.
Because he suddenly remembered something he had spent three years trying not to remember.
The night before Amelia disappeared, she had called him from the roadside.
He hadn't answered.
Not because he was asleep.
Not because he didn't hear it.
Because someone had been sitting across from him in his office when the phone rang.
Someone who had told him:
*“Let her go. Lily will be safer without her.””*
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
Amelia saw the recognition on his face.
“Who was with you?””
Daniel opened his mouth.
A voice came through the phone in Harris's hand.
The caller from downstairs.
Calm.
Almost amused.
“Daniel,” the voice said, “you should have told her three years ago.””
The call ended.
Harris looked at Daniel.
“Who was in the office?””
Daniel stared at the floor.
May you like
Then, slowly, he said a name.
And Amelia realized it was the one person she had never suspected.
