Chapter 4: The Man Daniel Trusted

Daniel stared at the floor.

Amelia could hear his breathing.

Once.

Twice.

Then he finally looked up.

“It was Marcus.””

The name hit Amelia harder than she expected.

Her face went still.

“Marcus?””

Daniel nodded.

“My brother.””

Amelia shook her head immediately.

“No.””

“I know.””

“No, Daniel. Marcus was at work that night.””

“I said I know.””

“He called me after you disappeared.””

“I know.””

“He cried when he heard about the crash.””

“I know.””

“He came to the funeral.””

“I know.””

Her voice rose.

“You let him stand beside me while I mourned myself.””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“I didn't know he was involved.””

Amelia stared at him.

“You said he was in your office.””

“He was.””

“And you listened to him.””

Daniel looked away.

“I was terrified.””

“You were my husband.””

“I thought I was protecting Lily.””

Amelia stepped toward him.

“By letting me die?””

“No.””

“By letting your daughter believe I abandoned her?””

“No.””

“Then tell me exactly what happened.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The memory came back with brutal clarity.

Three years earlier.

11:42 p.m.

He had been sitting alone in his office when Amelia's name appeared on his phone.

He reached for it.

Before he could answer, Marcus had spoken from the chair across the room.

“Don't.””

Daniel remembered looking at his brother.

“What?””

Marcus had leaned forward.

“She knows.””

“Knows what?””

“Everything.””

Daniel had laughed.

“You're not making sense.””

Marcus had stood.

“She found the ledger.””

Daniel remembered the fear on his brother's face.

Real fear.

Not anger.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“What ledger?””

“You don't need to know.””

“She's my wife.””

“And Lily is your daughter.””

The phone kept ringing.

Daniel had stared at it.

Marcus had taken one step closer.

“If Amelia comes home tonight, Lily dies.””

Daniel's lips trembled.

“She wouldn't believe you.””

Marcus had reached into his coat.

And pulled out a photograph.

Lily.

Standing outside her school.

Someone had circled her in red.

Daniel's memory stopped there.

Back in the bedroom, Amelia was crying silently.

“You believed him.””

Daniel nodded.

“I thought he had people watching Lily.””

“He did.””

“I didn't know.””

“He did.””

Harris lowered his phone.

“What else did he say?””

Daniel looked at him.

“He said Amelia couldn't be allowed to reach the bridge.””

Amelia's eyes sharpened.

“The bridge.””

Daniel nodded.

“That was the last thing I heard before she called again.””

Harris stepped closer.

“Did Marcus know where she was?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Daniel swallowed.

“He had access to my location-sharing account.””

Amelia looked at him.

“You gave him access?””

“I gave him access years earlier. For work.””

“What work?””

Daniel hesitated.

Harris answered.

“Marcus ran the family logistics company.””

Amelia turned toward him.

“What does that have to do with this?””

Harris reached into his coat.

“Everything.””

He took out another photograph.

This one showed a warehouse.

Large.

Industrial.

A row of trucks stood behind a chain-link fence.

Amelia recognized it.

Her stomach tightened.

“I've seen that place.””

Daniel looked over.

“Where?””

“In the ledger.””

Harris nodded.

“That warehouse belonged to a shell company.””

“Whose?””

“Marcus's.””

Daniel stepped backward.

“No.””

Harris looked at him.

“We traced three payments from the ledger to that company.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Marcus inherited that business.””

“Not all of it.””

“What are you saying?””

“I'm saying someone used his company to move money.””

“Money for what?””

Harris's eyes moved to Amelia.

“People.””

The word landed heavily.

Amelia stared at him.

“What kind of people?””

“Witnesses.””

She went pale.

“Witnesses to what?””

Harris didn't answer.

Daniel's voice broke.

“What did you find?””

Harris opened his mouth.

A sharp sound came from downstairs.

Crash.

Everyone froze.

Lily screamed.

“Mom!””

Amelia ran.

Daniel was right behind her.

They reached the dining room to find Lily standing beside the table, crying.

The front door was open.

The curtains blew in the wind.

Harris rushed toward the entryway.

“Stay here!””

A black figure disappeared around the side of the house.

Harris ran after him.

Daniel moved toward Lily.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded through tears.

Amelia pulled her close.

“What happened?””

Lily pointed toward the table.

“They took it.””

Amelia looked.

The evidence envelope was gone.

So was the photograph of the black SUV.

And the evidence bag containing the brake-line fragment.

Only one thing remained.

The birthday cake.

A knife had been driven straight through the center.

Attached to its handle was a folded piece of paper.

Daniel pulled it free.

His hands were shaking.

“Don't open it,” Amelia whispered.

He opened it anyway.

Three words were written across the page.

*YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT.*

Daniel's face went white.

Amelia took the paper.

There was something beneath the words.

A small symbol.

A circle.

Inside it, three vertical lines.

She stared at it.

“I know that.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Where?””

“The ledger.””

She closed her eyes.

“Every payment had this mark beside it.””

Harris returned, breathing hard.

“Lost him.””

Daniel held up the note.

“He left this.””

Harris read it.

His expression changed.

“They're escalating.””

“No kidding,” Daniel snapped.

Harris looked toward Lily.

“Where was she standing?””

“Here.””

“Did she touch anything?””

Lily shook her head.

Then she stopped.

“Wait.””

Amelia crouched beside her.

“What?””

Lily pointed beneath the table.

“He dropped something.””

Harris immediately bent down.

Under the table was a small silver key.

Daniel stared.

“I've never seen that.””

Amelia picked it up carefully.

A number was engraved on it.

*317.*

Harris recognized it.

“That's a motel key.””

“Which motel?”” Daniel asked.

Harris stared at the number.

“The one in the photograph.””

Amelia's pulse quickened.

“The black SUV.””

Harris nodded.

“Room 317.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Then that's where we go.””

“No.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Why not?””

“Because it's a trap.””

“We already know they're watching us.””

“That doesn't mean we walk into their hands.””

Daniel pointed at the key.

“That's the first real lead we've had.””

Amelia looked at him.

“Then we're going.””

Daniel turned.

“We?””

“You think I'm staying here?””

“No.””

“You don't get to decide that anymore.””

Daniel's face tightened.

“Amelia, I am trying to keep you alive.””

“You've tried that before.””

He flinched.

Lily stepped between them.

“Don't fight.””

Both parents fell silent.

Amelia knelt.

“Baby, you're going to stay with Mrs. Carter next door.””

“No.””

“It'll be safe.””

“I don't want to go anywhere without you.””

Amelia's eyes filled.

“You trust me?””

Lily nodded.

“Then trust me now.””

Lily wrapped her arms around her.

Daniel turned away.

His shoulders shook.

Harris looked at him.

“There's one more thing.””

Daniel wiped his face.

“What?””

Harris lowered his voice.

“The reason Marcus knew Amelia would be near the bridge wasn't because he tracked her phone.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Then how?””

“Someone inside your house called him.””

Daniel stared.

“No.””

“I checked the phone records.””

“Who?””

Harris's answer came quietly.

“Vanessa.””

Daniel turned toward the woman standing by the table.

Vanessa was crying.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

“That isn't true.””

Harris pulled out his phone.

“It is.””

“I never called him.””

“You called from this house.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I didn't.””

“You used a prepaid number registered to a dead woman.””

Amelia looked at her.

“A dead woman?””

Harris nodded.

“The number belonged to your mother.””

Vanessa's face collapsed.

Daniel stared.

“Why would you have your mother's number?””

Vanessa whispered, “I didn't.””

Harris stepped closer.

“Then explain why the phone activated the night of Amelia's accident.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I can't.””

“Why?””

“Because I didn't make that call.””

“Who did?””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Amelia.

Her lips trembled.

“I don't know.””

Amelia watched her carefully.

“You do.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

“You do.””

Vanessa backed into the chair.

“I've spent three years trying to forget.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Marcus wasn't alone.””

Harris went still.

Amelia's breathing stopped.

Daniel whispered, “Who was with him?””

Vanessa pressed a hand to her mouth.

Then she finally said:

“Your father.””

Daniel's face emptied of color.

“My father died ten years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then what did you just say?””

Vanessa started shaking.

“He didn't die.””

The room became deathly quiet.

Daniel stared at her.

“You're lying.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I saw him.””

“Where?””

“At the warehouse.””

“When?””

“Three nights ago.””

Amelia stepped closer.

“You're telling me Daniel's father is alive?””

Vanessa looked directly at her.

“No.””

She swallowed.

“I’m telling you someone wants us to believe he is.””

Harris's phone suddenly buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

A new photograph had arrived.

His face changed.

Daniel reached for the phone.

“What is it?””

Harris hesitated.

Then handed it over.

The photograph showed the warehouse from the front.

In the center stood Marcus.

Beside him was an older man with silver hair.

The image was grainy, but the face was clear enough.

Daniel stared at it.

He knew that face.

Everyone in the family did.

At the bottom of the photograph was a timestamp.

*Thirty-eight minutes ago.*
