Chapter 10: The Woman Who Came Back from the Dead

Robert immediately called the number Grace had used.

It was disconnected.

He tried again.

Nothing.

Then he contacted the phone company through the appropriate legal channels and requested that the call information be preserved.

I stood beside the dining table, staring at the photograph of Grace holding baby Brielle.

Eleven years.

For eleven years, this woman had been hiding while her daughter grew up believing Vanessa was her mother.

And now she had contacted me because someone was trying to steal Maya's invention.

“What happens if Daniel finds out she called?”” I asked.

Robert closed his notebook.

“Then we have to assume she's in immediate danger.””

Vanessa was sitting on the sofa, holding the photograph.

“Grace is alive,” she whispered.

I turned toward her.

“You knew her personally?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She was my friend before Brielle was born. We met through a business networking group. She was working as an administrative assistant for Peter's company.””

“What was she like?””

Vanessa smiled sadly.

“She was kind. Very protective of Brielle. She used to say she wanted her daughter to grow up believing she could do anything.””

Maya looked up.

“Like Dad says to me.””

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“Yes. Exactly like that.””

I watched her carefully.

“Why did you never tell Brielle about Grace?””

“Daniel said she had died. He told me the adoption would be easier if Brielle believed I was her biological mother.””

Robert interrupted.

“Did you ever receive a death certificate?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. Daniel said the paperwork was being handled by an attorney.””

“Which attorney?””

“I don't remember the name.””

Robert wrote something down.

“Then we'll need to identify that person.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I know you don't believe me.””

I didn't answer.

She continued.

“I made terrible decisions. I let Brielle take Maya's work. I helped Daniel because I was afraid of losing everything. But I didn't know he was involved in Elena's death.””

Maya stood.

“You didn't have to know about Aunt Elena to know burning Nova was wrong.””

Vanessa looked at her daughter.

“I know.””

“No, Mom. You keep saying that. But you never stopped.””

Vanessa began crying.

Maya picked up her backpack.

“I'm going to my room.””

I let her go.

Robert waited until she had disappeared upstairs.

Then he turned to Vanessa.

“Mrs. Hayes, I need you to understand something. If you signed documents that were part of a fraudulent guardianship arrangement, you may have legal exposure.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I'll cooperate.””

“Completely?””

“Yes.””

“Even if that means testifying against Daniel?””

She hesitated.

Then she nodded again.

“Yes.””

That afternoon, Robert arranged a secure meeting with Grace through a retired detective he trusted.

The location was an old community center on the north side of town.

I wanted to bring Maya, but Robert strongly advised against it.

“She's already been threatened,” he said.

“Let her have one afternoon where she doesn't have to worry about this.””

He was right.

Before leaving, I found Maya sitting at her workbench.

She had arranged Nova's damaged components in neat rows.

“What are you doing?””

“Making an inventory.””

I smiled faintly.

“Of course you are.””

She held up a small motor.

“This one still works. And the sensor casing can be repaired.””

“That's good.””

She looked at me.

“Dad, do you think Aunt Elena would have liked Nova?””

I sat beside her.

“I think she would have loved it.””

“Even though mine looks different?””

“Especially because it looks different. You took an idea and made it your own.””

Maya smiled.

Then she pointed toward the old blueprint.

“I found something else.””

She showed me a small handwritten note on the bottom corner.

Version 2 must be built by someone who understands that a machine should never be used to control another person.

I read it twice.

Maya looked thoughtful.

“I think that's why she made the robot.””

I kissed the top of her head.

“Maybe you're right.””

At four o'clock, I met Grace.

She was sitting at the far end of the community center, wearing a dark coat and a baseball cap.

When she saw me, she stood.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she said, “You look like Elena.””

I swallowed.

“So people keep telling me.””

Grace sat down.

Her hands trembled as she removed the cap.

She looked older than the woman in the photographs, but I recognized her immediately.

“Thank you for coming,” she said.

“Thank you for calling.””

She glanced toward the entrance.

“Did anyone follow you?””

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

She exhaled.

Then she reached into her bag and removed a small envelope.

“I've kept this for eleven years.””

Inside was a photograph of Elena standing in her laboratory.

She was smiling beside the original prototype.

On the back, she had written:

Grace, if anything happens, make sure Marcus knows the truth.

I looked at her.

“What happened that night?””

Grace folded her hands.

“Peter and Daniel had been stealing Elena's research for months. They were preparing to sell the technology to a private investor. Elena discovered the contracts and threatened to expose them.””

“Did they attack her?””

Grace nodded.

“I was there.””

I leaned forward.

“Tell me everything.””

Grace looked down.

“Peter arrived first. Daniel came about twenty minutes later. They argued with Elena about the patent. She refused to sign anything.””

“What happened next?””

“Peter grabbed her arm. Elena pulled away and knocked over a computer monitor. Daniel started searching her desk.””

Grace's voice trembled.

“I was hiding in the supply room. I had gone there to collect some paperwork. I saw everything through the door.””

“Did they hurt her?””

“Peter pushed her into the workbench. She hit her head. Daniel took the original project files.””

I felt sick.

“What happened after that?””

Grace looked directly at me.

“Elena wasn't dead.””

I stared.

“What?””

“She was unconscious, but she was breathing. Peter wanted to call an ambulance. Daniel stopped him.””

My hands curled into fists.

“What did Daniel say?””

Grace swallowed.

“He said if Elena survived, she would tell everyone what happened. He said they had already taken too much of her work to let her destroy them.””

I could barely breathe.

“What did they do?””

Grace closed her eyes.

“They put her in the passenger seat of her car. Daniel drove it out of the laboratory.””

“Where?””

“Toward the old industrial road.””

I stared at her.

“You're saying they staged an accident?””

Grace nodded.

“I heard Daniel say they would make it look like she lost control.””

For a moment, the room seemed to disappear.

My sister.

My little sister, who used to leave drawings on my bedroom door.

Who had taught me how to fix a broken radio.

Who had promised to build a robot for Maya when she was old enough to understand how it worked.

I pressed my hands against the table.

“Why didn't you tell the police?””

“I tried.””

“Your statement was in the report.””

Grace nodded.

“But Daniel found out I had spoken to the investigator. He told me I would lose Brielle if I didn't disappear.””

“What?””

“He had arranged the guardianship papers. He knew people who could make my life impossible. He showed me photographs of Brielle at school and said he could make sure she was taken away.””

I stared at her.

“So you left your daughter?””

Grace began crying.

“I thought it was the only way to keep her safe.””

“Why didn't you contact her later?””

“I tried. Twice. Both times Daniel found out.””

She reached into her bag again.

This time, she removed a small USB drive.

“I kept a copy of the laboratory security footage. Not the whole recording, but enough to prove I was there.””

I looked at the drive.

“Where did you get it?””

“Elena gave it to me before the attack. She told me to hide it if anything happened.””

“Does it show what happened to her?””

Grace nodded.

“Part of it.””

I took a breath.

“Why contact me now?””

She looked toward the window.

“Because Daniel has made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“He thinks the original prototype is the only thing that contains the evidence.””

Grace leaned closer.

“But Elena made a second recording.””

I froze.

“Where?””

“Inside the machine's original control unit. She installed an emergency recording system that activates when someone tries to remove the memory module.””

My mind raced.

Maya had discovered a recovery switch.

The old prototype could contain more than technical data.

It could contain the final moments before Elena's death.

Grace continued.

“And there's something else you need to know about Brielle.””

I waited.

“She was there that night.””

I frowned.

“She was a baby.””

Grace nodded.

“Daniel brought her to the laboratory because he knew I was there. He used her to make me cooperate.””

My stomach tightened.

“Did Brielle see anything?””

“Not that I know of. But Daniel kept photographs. He told me he would destroy her life if I ever spoke.””

I stood.

“Grace, we're going to get her back.””

Grace grabbed my wrist.

“There's one more thing.””

“What?””

“Daniel knows where I am.””

My phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

It showed Grace sitting across from me.

Taken through the community center window.

Underneath it was a message.

*You should have stayed dead, Grace.*

Grace went white.

I immediately called Robert.

But before he answered, a second message arrived.

This one contained a photograph of Maya.

She was standing outside our house.

May you like

The caption read:

*Next time, it won't be a warning.*
