Chapter 12: My Sister's Final Message
I didn't play the recording immediately.
I stared at the filename.
For eleven years, I had lived with questions about Elena's death.
Now I was looking at something she had apparently left for me.
Something she had intended me to hear.
Maya stood beside the laptop.
“Dad, should we listen?””
I nodded.
She pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a familiar voice emerged.
“Marcus?””
My knees nearly gave way.
It was Elena.
Her voice sounded tired, but unmistakably hers.
“If you're hearing this, something has gone wrong.””
I covered my mouth.
Maya moved closer.
The recording continued.
“I need you to know that I never abandoned the project. Peter and Daniel are trying to take the technology. They have already copied some of my designs, but they don't understand the central system.””
There was a pause.
A metallic sound.
Then Elena spoke again.
“Marcus, the prototype isn't just a machine. It's a record of everything we've done. I installed an independent memory system because I stopped trusting the people around me.””
I looked at Maya.
She was listening without blinking.
Elena continued.
“If they come after me, don't let them convince you that I was unstable. I know what I'm doing. I know what I've built.””
Her voice became softer.
“And if Maya ever finds this recording, tell her something for me.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Tell her that being intelligent doesn't mean she has to let people use her. Tell her that kindness isn't weakness. And tell her that I would have loved to meet her.””
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Maya wiped her cheeks.
“She knew about me.””
I put my arms around her.
“She never got the chance to meet you, but she knew you existed.””
Maya held me tightly.
Then Robert entered the room.
“Have you played it?””
I nodded.
He listened to the recording.
When it ended, he asked Maya to preserve the original file and make a verified copy for the investigators.
Then he looked at me.
“We have enough to establish that the original prototype may contain evidence Daniel is trying to destroy. But the kidnapping comes first.””
I nodded.
“What about the tactical team?””
“They're moving toward the laboratory. We're not going to alert Daniel that we know the location.””
Vanessa was standing in the hallway.
She had heard the recording.
When Maya came out, Vanessa approached her.
“Sweetheart…”
Maya stopped.
Vanessa lowered herself to her knees.
“I'm sorry.””
Maya looked at her.
“You said that before.””
“I know.””
“You let Brielle believe her real mother was dead.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I was wrong.””
“You let Mom's friend—” Maya stopped and corrected herself.
“You let Grace lose her daughter.””
Vanessa began crying.
“I thought I was protecting Brielle.””
“You were protecting yourself.””
Vanessa looked down.
For once, she didn't argue.
Maya walked past her.
I followed my daughter into the garage.
She sat beside Nova's damaged frame.
“Dad, I want to finish rebuilding her.””
“Not tonight.””
“I know. But I want to.””
I sat beside her.
“We will.””
She studied the old blueprints.
“I think I can combine Aunt Elena's original design with my newer control system.””
“That sounds ambitious.””
She smiled.
“That's the point.””
For a moment, I saw the little girl who had spent nine months building a robot because she believed machines could make the world better.
Then my phone vibrated.
Robert.
“Marcus, the tactical team has located the facility.””
I stood.
“Have they found Brielle?””
“Not yet. They're entering through the east side.””
I looked toward Vanessa.
She was standing in the doorway, holding a photograph of Brielle.
Robert continued.
“There's one more issue. Daniel appears to have left a vehicle outside the facility.””
“Where is he?””
“We don't know.””
I felt a knot form in my stomach.
“Then who has Brielle?””
“We're checking.””
A few minutes later, a police officer called Robert.
He put the phone on speaker.
“Detective, what's happening?””
“We found the room shown in the photograph. The girl isn't there.””
Vanessa gasped.
“What do you mean she isn't there?””
The officer continued.
“There are signs someone was recently held inside. A chair, restraints, and a bottle of water. But the room is empty.””
I looked at the photograph.
“Did you find anything else?””
“Yes. A phone.””
“Whose?””
“Registered to Brielle's mother.””
Grace.
I turned toward Robert.
“Daniel has Grace too.””
The officer's voice became urgent.
“We found a second room. There are fresh tire marks outside the rear entrance.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Can you follow them?””
“We're working on it.””
Robert ended the call.
Vanessa sank onto the sofa.
I looked at her.
“Stay with Maya.””
“Where are you going?””
“To help the police.””
Robert immediately objected.
“Marcus, you're not going anywhere near that facility.””
“Then tell me what we can do.””
He opened his briefcase.
“We can use the recording to establish what Daniel is trying to retrieve. But there's another way to get him to reveal his location.””
He looked at Maya.
“Your daughter may be able to help.””
Maya stepped forward.
“How?””
Robert explained that Daniel believed the original prototype contained the only surviving copy of Elena's evidence.
If he learned that Maya had recovered another recording, he might contact us again.
I shook my head.
“No. We're not using my daughter as bait.””
Maya looked at me.
“Dad, I can help without putting myself in danger.””
“No.””
“Dad—”
“No, Maya.””
She lowered her eyes.
Robert stepped between us.
“Marcus is right. We won't expose her to unnecessary risk.””
Maya looked disappointed but didn't argue.
Then she suddenly picked up her laptop.
“Wait.””
She opened the recovered audio file again.
“There's something strange in the recording.””
“What?””
She replayed the final seconds.
After Elena's voice ended, there was a faint electronic sound.
Three short tones.
Maya listened again.
“That's not static.””
She opened an audio analysis program.
The tones appeared as a repeating pattern.
“It's a signal.””
Robert leaned closer.
“Can you identify it?””
Maya nodded slowly.
“It sounds like an old emergency beacon. Aunt Elena may have embedded a location signal in the recording.””
I stared.
“Meaning?””
“Meaning the prototype might still be transmitting its location.””
Robert looked at her.
“Can you trace it?””
“Not from this file alone. But if we recover the original control unit, I might be able to activate the beacon.””
I looked at the old blueprints.
The original prototype was still in the warehouse.
Secured by the investigators.
And Daniel wanted it badly enough to kidnap two women.
I called the detective.
“Have you secured the warehouse?””
“Yes.””
“Is the prototype still there?””
“Affirmative.””
“Then we need to inspect the original control unit. My daughter has identified a possible emergency beacon.””
The detective paused.
“Mr. Reed, that equipment is part of an active investigation.””
“I understand. But it may help locate the missing witnesses.””
He agreed to coordinate with the technical team.
Two hours later, Robert received an update.
The original prototype had been examined.
The memory module was intact.
And the emergency beacon was still operational.
But the signal wasn't coming from the warehouse.
It was coming from somewhere else.
A location several miles outside the city.
Robert looked at the coordinates.
“Marcus, I think we've found them.””
The police moved immediately.
I stayed home with Maya and Vanessa.
At 11:36 p.m., Robert called.
“Grace has been found.””
I stood.
“Is she alive?””
“Yes. She's injured, but conscious.””
“And Brielle?””
A pause.
“She's not with her.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“Where is she?””
Robert lowered his voice.
“We found Daniel's vehicle abandoned near the old railway station.””
My stomach dropped.
Then Robert continued.
“There's something else. The officers found a handwritten note inside the vehicle.””
“What does it say?””
Robert read it aloud.
If you want the girl back, bring the original invention to the place where Elena died.
I looked at Maya.
Her face had gone white.
“Where did Elena die?”” she whispered.
I closed my eyes.
The old industrial road.
The place where my sister's car had supposedly lost control eleven years earlier.
Robert continued.
“Marcus, the police are preparing a search operation. We believe Daniel is taking Brielle there.””
I looked at the clock.
Then at the damaged robot.
And suddenly, I understood.
Daniel didn't just want the original prototype.
He wanted to return to the scene of the crime.
He wanted the evidence destroyed in the same place where Elena had died.
I picked up my coat.
Robert's voice sharpened.
“Marcus, don't even think about going there yourself.””
I looked at Maya.
Then I looked at the old blueprint.
“I'm not going alone.””
Maya stepped forward.
“Dad, what do we do?””
I held her shoulders.
“We let the police handle Daniel.””
“But Brielle—”
“We're bringing her home.””
My phone vibrated again.
A new message.
This time, it came with a video.
Brielle was sitting inside a car.
Her face was bruised.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Vanessa,” she whispered, “I'm sorry.””
Then Daniel's voice came from behind the camera.
“Tell Marcus what you told me.””
Brielle began crying.
“I know where the original recording is.””
Daniel leaned closer.
“Tell him.””
Brielle looked into the camera.
And then she said something that made every hair on my arms stand up.
“It's not inside the robot.””
The video ended.
I looked at Maya.
She slowly turned toward Elena's old blueprint.
Then she pointed to a small handwritten symbol in the corner.
A blue circle surrounded by three lines.
“Dad…”
“What?””
“I've seen that symbol before.””
“Where?””
She opened her notebook and turned to the first design she had ever made of Nova.
The same symbol was drawn beside the original control board.
Maya whispered:
“I think Aunt Elena hid the recording inside the one part of Nova that survived the fire.””
I stared at the remains of my daughter's robot.
The memory card.
The protective casing.
The damaged control unit.
And for the first time, I understood why Daniel had been so desperate to destroy it.
May you like
The fire hadn't erased the evidence.
It had hidden it.
