Chapter 11: The Night They Came for Maya
I called the police before leaving the community center.
Robert arrived within fifteen minutes with two officers.
Grace was moved to a secure location.
I was driven home.
The entire journey, I kept looking at my phone.
No new messages.
No calls.
Nothing.
That silence frightened me more than the threats.
When I arrived, two patrol cars were already outside the house.
Vanessa was standing on the porch.
Her face was white.
“Where's Maya?”” I demanded.
“Upstairs.””
“Is she safe?””
“I think so.””
I ran inside.
Maya was sitting on her bedroom floor, surrounded by notebooks and electronic components.
When she saw me, she stood.
“Dad!””
I pulled her into my arms.
“Are you hurt?””
“No. Why?””
I showed her the photograph.
She stared at it.
“That was taken yesterday.””
“I know.””
“But how did they get it?””
“I don't know yet.””
She looked frightened.
“Dad, did something happen to Grace?””
“She’s safe.””
I didn't tell her everything.
Not yet.
A police officer entered the hallway.
“Mr. Reed, we've checked the property. We found signs of attempted entry near the rear garage door.””
I looked toward the back of the house.
“Did anyone get inside?””
“We're still reviewing the security footage.””
I followed him downstairs.
The rear door had several fresh scratches near the lock.
On the floor was a small black plastic object.
The officer picked it up using gloves.
“Looks like part of an electronic device.””
I examined it.
It resembled the casing of a miniature camera.
“Could it be from a surveillance device?””
“Possibly.””
The officer photographed it.
Then he asked whether we had noticed any missing documents or equipment.
I thought about the basement.
The original blueprint.
Elena's letter.
The photograph.
I rushed downstairs.
The metal case was still there.
But something was missing.
The envelope containing Elena's handwritten letter.
I searched the entire box.
Nothing.
Someone had taken it.
I called Robert.
“Someone entered the house.””
“What was taken?””
“Elena's letter.””
“Anything else?””
“Not that I can see.””
“Don't touch the area around the basement entrance. I'll arrange for the forensic team to document it.””
I looked at the empty envelope.
Daniel had wanted that letter.
Which meant he knew exactly what it contained.
I returned upstairs.
Vanessa was sitting with Maya.
She looked at me.
“They took something?””
“Elena's letter.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“I should have told you sooner.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
She looked toward Maya.
Then she lowered her voice.
“Daniel came here last week while you were away.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“When?””
“Thursday.””
“Why?””
“He wanted the original blueprints.””
“Did you give them to him?””
“No.””
“Did he take anything?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“He asked me whether Elena had left a metal case.””
I stared at her.
“And you didn't think that was important?””
“I didn't know what it meant.””
I took a slow breath.
“What else?””
Vanessa's voice dropped.
“He said that if I helped him recover the original prototype, he would make sure Brielle stayed with me.””
I looked at her.
“You knew Grace was alive?””
“No.””
“Then why did he keep threatening you with Brielle?””
Vanessa began crying.
“He said he had documents proving I had no legal rights to her. He said if I didn't cooperate, he would make sure I lost her.””
Maya looked up.
“Mom, you knew Brielle wasn't really yours?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I knew she was Grace's daughter.””
“Then why did you let her believe Grace was dead?””
Vanessa had no answer.
Maya turned away.
I wanted to comfort her, but the police officer returned.
“Mr. Reed, we found something on the garage camera.””
He showed me a video.
A man wearing a dark hoodie approached the rear door at 11:42 p.m.
He tried the lock.
Then he looked directly at the camera.
He removed something from his pocket and covered the lens.
But not before the footage captured his face.
Peter Collins.
I stared at the screen.
“That's Peter.””
The officer nodded.
“We'll need to identify him formally, but we have a strong match.””
I called Robert.
“Peter was here last night.””
Robert went quiet.
“Are you sure?””
“I have footage.””
“Send it immediately.””
I looked at the officer.
“Can you find him?””
“We're contacting his address.””
Then the officer's radio crackled.
A colleague was speaking.
“Possible suspect vehicle located near the industrial district. Registered to Peter Collins. Vehicle appears abandoned.””
I looked at Robert.
He had heard the transmission.
“Marcus,” he said, “don't go anywhere without police protection.””
I nodded.
But then Maya appeared in the doorway.
“Dad?””
“What is it?””
She was holding her laptop.
“I found something in Nova's recovered files.””
I walked over.
“What?””
She turned the screen toward me.
A new video was playing.
It showed Daniel standing in the garage three days before Nova was destroyed.
He was holding a small black device.
Peter stood beside him.
“Is this the new recording module?”” Peter asked.
Daniel nodded.
“It's designed to copy everything from the old prototype.””
“And what happens to the original data?””
Daniel smiled.
“Once we have it, we'll destroy the source.””
Peter looked uneasy.
“What about the old recording?””
Daniel leaned closer.
“That's why we need the machine. It contains the only evidence of what happened to Elena.””
I stared at the screen.
Maya paused the video.
“Dad, why did he say the old recording?””
I looked at her.
“Because he knows what's inside the prototype.””
She opened another file.
This one was a short audio recording.
Daniel's voice came through.
“Peter, the original recording must never reach Marcus.””
Peter answered.
“What if he already has it?””
Daniel laughed.
“Then we'll make sure nobody believes him.””
I felt cold.
The recording continued.
Peter asked, “And the girl?””
Daniel replied:
“Brielle is the key. Once we control her story, we control Grace. Once we control Grace, we control the evidence.””
Maya looked at me.
“He used Brielle?””
I nodded slowly.
“He used everyone.””
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
Her face was drained of color.
“Marcus…”
I turned.
She was holding her phone.
“Daniel just called me.””
“What did he say?””
She swallowed.
“He wants to meet.””
“Where?””
“At the old laboratory.””
I looked at Robert's message appearing on my phone.
He had already sent a warning.
*Do not go. Peter's vehicle has been found. We have reason to believe Daniel may be trying to lure you somewhere.*
I showed Vanessa.
She shook her head.
“He said he has Brielle.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“He said if I don't bring the original prototype to the laboratory tonight, he'll send Brielle away.””
I stepped closer.
“Did he tell you where she is?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“He sent me a photograph.””
She showed me the screen.
Brielle was sitting in a small room.
Her hands were tied.
A handwritten sign behind her read:
*THE ORIGINAL OWNER MUST COME FOR THE ORIGINAL INVENTION.*
Maya covered her mouth.
“That's Brielle.””
I immediately called the police.
Within minutes, the house was surrounded by officers.
Robert arrived and reviewed the photograph.
“This is a kidnapping threat,” he said.
“We are not negotiating with him alone.””
Vanessa was crying uncontrollably.
“She's my daughter.””
I looked at her.
“Then help us get her back.””
Robert contacted the detective handling the case.
The photograph was analyzed for background details.
A few minutes later, they identified a distinctive industrial ventilation system.
It belonged to an abandoned manufacturing facility outside the city.
The same facility where Elena had once worked.
I looked at the officers.
“That's the old laboratory.””
Robert shook his head.
“We're waiting for the tactical team.””
I understood the need for caution.
But every second felt unbearable.
Then Maya walked toward the workbench.
“Dad.””
I turned.
She was holding Nova's damaged memory module.
“I think I know how to find Brielle.””
“What?””
“Nova recorded the new device Daniel brought into the garage. It transmitted a signal.””
Robert stepped forward.
“Can you identify the receiver?””
Maya nodded.
“Maybe. The recording includes a short wireless handshake. If I compare it with the signal information in the original prototype, I might be able to identify the system.””
Robert looked at me.
“Can she do that safely?””
Maya answered before I could.
“I don't need to connect to anything. I just need to analyze the recording.””
She opened her laptop.
Her fingers moved rapidly.
A few minutes later, she pointed at the screen.
“There.””
A device identifier appeared.
Maya looked at the photograph of Brielle.
“The signal came from the old laboratory.””
The detective received the information.
Within minutes, the tactical team was preparing to move.
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
“Marcus, please bring her home.””
I looked at her.
“We will.””
But as the officers prepared to leave, my phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
His voice was calm.
“Good evening, Marcus.””
I said nothing.
“Bring the prototype. Come alone.””
“Let Brielle go.””
He chuckled.
“She's not the one I want.””
“What do you want?””
“I want the original recording.””
I looked at Robert.
He signaled for me to keep him talking.
Daniel continued.
“And before you make any heroic decisions, remember something. Your daughter built a beautiful little machine. It would be a shame if someone made sure she never got the chance to build another.””
I clenched my teeth.
“If you touch Maya—”
“Bring the prototype, Marcus.””
The call ended.
Robert looked at me.
“Now we know what he wants.””
I nodded.
But there was something Daniel didn't know.
The original prototype was no longer the only place where Elena's final recording might exist.
Maya had found a second hidden storage partition in Nova's recovered memory.
And when she opened it, a single audio file appeared.

The filename was:
