Chapter 13: The Secret Inside the Ashes

I stared at the damaged control unit on Maya's workbench.

The same symbol appeared on Elena's blueprint, on Maya's first design for Nova, and now on the recovered memory card.

A blue circle surrounded by three lines.

“What does it mean?”” I asked.

Maya carefully turned the card over.

“I don't know yet. But look at the casing.””

She pointed to a tiny groove along one edge.

It was almost invisible beneath the soot.

“Nova's original memory card had a protective shell,” she explained.

“When we recovered it from the fire, I thought the shell was just damaged. But this part isn't supposed to be here.””

She used a small screwdriver to loosen the casing.

A thin metal strip came free.

Inside was a second compartment.

My heart began pounding.

Maya removed a tiny black chip.

“Dad…”

I stared at it.

“Is that the recording?””

“Maybe. It's a separate storage module.””

She connected it to an isolated reader.

The computer recognized the device.

One file appeared.

*ELENA_ARCHIVE_01*

Maya didn't open it.

Instead, she looked at me.

“Should we call Robert?””

“Yes.””

I contacted him immediately.

Within twenty minutes, he arrived with a digital forensics specialist named Aaron Price.

Aaron examined the chip without removing it from its protective casing.

“Interesting,” he said.

“This appears to be an encrypted archive. The device has a tamper-resistant design.””

“Can you open it?”” I asked.

“Possibly. But we need to preserve the original data. I'll create a forensic image first.””

Maya leaned forward.

“I think the blue symbol is the key.””

Aaron looked at her.

“Why?””

She showed him the original blueprint.

“My aunt used the same symbol in her early designs. It's probably a reference to the emergency archive.””

Aaron studied the drawing.

Then he examined the chip.

“She's right. There are three contact points arranged exactly like this symbol.””

He connected a small diagnostic tool.

A warning appeared.

*AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED.*

Maya frowned.

“It's asking for a sequence.””

“Can you work it out?”” Aaron asked.

She studied the screen.

Then she opened her notebook.

“I think I know.””

She entered three numbers.

The system rejected them.

Maya tried again.

Another rejection.

She leaned back.

“Wait. Aunt Elena didn't use birthdays. She used engineering measurements.””

She returned to the blueprint.

At the bottom, beneath the symbol, were three handwritten values.

Maya entered them.

The screen changed.

<escape>ARCHIVE UNLOCKED.</escape>

Aaron smiled.

“That's it.””

A list of files appeared.

There were photographs, technical documents, audio recordings, and a video.

The first file was labeled:

*LABORATORY_11_YEARS_AGO_FINAL_RECORDING*

Robert looked at me.

“Marcus, before we open anything, I need you to understand that this may be critical evidence.””

“I understand.””

Aaron made another verified copy.

Then he opened the video.

The screen showed Elena's laboratory.

The date in the corner was eleven years earlier.

Elena stood beside the original prototype, speaking into a small camera.

“If this recording is being viewed, it means Peter and Daniel have attempted to take the project.””

She looked exhausted.

Her hair was tied back, and there was a small bruise on her wrist.

“I have documented every unauthorized transfer, every altered contract, and every attempt to pressure me into signing away my work.””

She reached toward the camera.

“Grace has a copy of the first security recording. This archive contains the original documents.””

Then the video changed.

A new camera angle appeared.

Peter entered the laboratory.

Daniel followed him.

Elena stepped away from the workbench.

“You have no right to be here,” she said.

Peter laughed.

“We've been partners for years.””

“Not anymore.””

Daniel placed a folder on the table.

“Sign the transfer agreement.””

“No.””

“You're making this harder than it needs to be.””

Elena pushed the folder away.

“I designed the technology. You stole my work. I'm not signing anything.””

Peter moved closer.

“You're going to ruin all of us.””

“You ruined yourselves.””

Daniel glanced toward the laboratory door.

Then he spoke quietly.

“Peter, get the files.””

Peter began removing storage drives.

Elena reached for a small device on the workbench.

Daniel noticed.

He grabbed her arm.

She struggled.

The camera shook as the device fell.

Then the image steadied.

Elena was on the floor.

Peter stood over her.

Daniel looked down.

“Get the drives,” he said.

Peter hesitated.

“She's hurt.””

“Then call someone.””

Daniel picked up Elena's phone.

He examined the screen, then looked toward the camera.

And for one terrible second, he seemed to look directly at us.

“Turn it off,” he told Peter.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Aaron opened another file.

This one contained scanned documents.

There were original patent drafts, design records, financial transfers, and a signed agreement between Elena and a technology company.

The agreement proved that Elena had retained ownership of the original technology.

Peter and Daniel had never acquired the rights they later claimed to own.

But the most important file was a document titled:

*INCIDENT RESPONSE — VEHICLE TRANSFER*

Robert read it carefully.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He turned the screen toward me.

It was an internal report from a private security company.

The document showed that Daniel had arranged for Elena's car to be moved from the industrial road to a second location after the crash.

There were photographs of the vehicle.

And a handwritten note:

Passenger removed before emergency services arrived.

My blood ran cold.

“Passenger removed?””

Robert looked at me.

“Marcus, this suggests someone may have moved Elena before the authorities arrived.””

I could barely speak.

“Was she alive?””

Robert didn't answer immediately.

Then Aaron opened the final audio file.

The timestamp was several minutes after the crash.

Elena's voice was faint.

“Marcus…”

I gripped the edge of the table.

“Please,” she whispered.

“Don't let them take Maya's future.””

A man's voice interrupted.

Daniel.

“She's not going to be a problem anymore.””

Then another voice.

Peter.

“What about the hospital?””

Daniel answered.

“I've handled it.””

The recording ended.

Robert closed his eyes.

“We need to get this to the investigators immediately.””

I nodded.

Then my phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered.

Daniel's voice came through.

“You found it.””

I said nothing.

He chuckled.

“I knew the little girl would figure it out eventually.””

“Where is Brielle?””

“Bring me the archive.””

“No.””

A pause.

Then Daniel said, “You don't understand, Marcus. That recording doesn't just destroy Peter and me. It destroys people who are much more powerful than either of us.””

“I don't care.””

“You should.””

He sent another photograph.

Brielle was sitting beside an old concrete barrier.

Behind her was the industrial road.

The same road where Elena's car had supposedly crashed.

Daniel spoke again.

“Bring the original chip. Come alone. If the police arrive, the girl disappears.””

I looked at Robert.

He was already signaling the investigators.

“Daniel, I want to hear Brielle's voice.””

He laughed.

“You're not in a position to make demands.””

“Then you have nothing to negotiate.””

There was silence.

Then Brielle's voice came through.

“Marcus?””

I closed my eyes.

“I'm here, sweetheart.””

“Please tell Vanessa I'm sorry.””

“You don't need to apologize. We're coming to get you.””

Daniel took the phone away.

“Midnight. The old industrial road. Bring the chip.””

The call ended.

Robert immediately contacted the tactical commander.

“We have a confirmed kidnapping location and an active threat.””

He turned toward me.

“We're not handing him the evidence.””

I nodded.

“What about Brielle?””

“We're going to bring her home.””

Maya stood beside the table.

She had been listening to everything.

“Dad, the archive has another file.””

I looked at the screen.

She pointed to a small folder hidden beneath the main directory.

*ELENA — PERSONAL MESSAGE.*

Aaron opened it.

A video appeared.

Elena was sitting alone in the laboratory.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Marcus, if you've found this, then I need you to know something I couldn't tell you before.””

She took a breath.

“Daniel didn't act alone.””

The screen went black.

Then one final line appeared.

*AUTHORIZED BY: THOMAS WALKER.*

I stared at the name.

The retired police officer who had helped us recover the original investigation.

The man who had told us he wanted justice for Elena.

Robert looked at me.

“Marcus…”

Before he could finish, my phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID showed Thomas Walker.

I answered.

His voice was calm.

“Don't trust the police team heading to the industrial road.””

My blood turned cold.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel has someone inside it.””

May you like

Then he whispered:

“And that person knows exactly where your daughter is.””
