Chapter 3: The Man Behind the Door

I replayed the recording three times.

Each time, Daniel's voice sounded more familiar.

Each time, I noticed something different.

The first time, I heard his question.

The second time, I heard Vanessa's answer.

The third time, I noticed the reflection in Nova's polished metal casing.

Daniel wasn't alone.

There was another person standing behind him.

A person I couldn't identify.

“Dad?””

Maya's voice pulled me out of my thoughts.

“Who is that man?””

I closed the laptop halfway.

“I don't know yet.””

“But you know Mr. Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“Is he your friend?””

I looked at my daughter.

For years, I had called Daniel my closest friend.

We had started our construction consulting business together. He had helped me negotiate our first major contract, attended Maya's kindergarten graduation, and once driven through a snowstorm to bring me medicine when I was sick.

He knew everything about my finances.

He knew when I traveled.

He knew which bills I paid and when.

And apparently, he had been visiting my house while I was away.

“Dad?””

I forced myself to smile.

“We're going to figure this out.””

My phone vibrated.

An incoming call.

Daniel.

I stared at the screen.

Maya saw his name.

“That's him.””

I answered and put the phone on speaker.

“Marcus!”” Daniel sounded cheerful.

“You're back early.””

I glanced at Maya.

“Apparently.””

There was a brief pause.

“How was the trip?””

“Fine.””

“Listen, I was going to call you tomorrow. We need to discuss the Henderson contract.””

“I thought we discussed that last week.””

“We did. Something changed.””

I looked at the laptop.

“Did it?””

Daniel chuckled.

“What's wrong? You sound strange.””

I leaned against the workbench.

“Daniel, were you at my house last night?””

Silence.

Only for a second.

But I heard it.

“Why would you ask that?””

“It's a simple question.””

“I stopped by to drop off some documents. Vanessa said you were away.””

“What documents?””

“Business papers.””

“Which business papers?””

He sighed.

“Marcus, I'm driving. I don't have time for this.””

I glanced at Maya.

She had opened the recording again and was watching Daniel's reflection.

“Were you in my garage?””

Another pause.

“Why?””

“Because I found something.””

His voice changed.

“What did you find?””

I smiled without humor.

“That's interesting. You haven't asked what happened.””

Daniel exhaled.

“Marcus, don't do this.””

“Do what?””

“Turn a family disagreement into a business problem.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“A family disagreement?””

“Vanessa told me about the robot. She said the girls were fighting over a project.””

“She also told you they were burning it?””

He didn't answer.

“Daniel?””

“Listen. I think you should calm down before you make a decision you'll regret.””

I ended the call.

Maya stared at me.

“He knew.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't he stop them?””

I looked at the burned robot.

“I don't know.””

My phone rang again.

This time, it was my attorney, Robert Hayes.

I had called him while the videos were loading. He had promised to call back as soon as he finished another meeting.

“Marcus,” Robert said, “I've received the documents you sent.””

“Can we talk?””

“Of course. But first, I need you to answer something. Is Vanessa currently at the property?””

“Yes.””

“And is your daughter safe?””

I looked toward the garage door.

“Yes. She's with me.””

“Good. Don't argue with anyone. Don't threaten anyone.

Preserve every recording exactly as it is. Make copies, but don't alter the original files.””

“Understood.””

“There may be more going on than the destruction of the robot.””

I lowered my voice.

“What do you mean?””

Robert paused.

“I reviewed the property documents you sent. Your wife has been making inquiries about the ownership structure.””

I frowned.

“What inquiries?””

“She contacted the county office about transferring an interest in the property.””

I looked at the black folder on the workbench.

“Without my signature?””

“That is what we need to establish. Did you authorize her to handle any property-related paperwork?””

“No.””

“Then don't sign anything she brings you.””

I thanked him and ended the call.

Maya was watching me.

“What happened?””

“Nothing you need to worry about right now.””

She frowned.

“Dad, please don't lie to me.””

I sat beside her.

“You're right.””

I explained what Robert had said.

Maya looked down at her hands.

“Did Mom want to take our house?””

“I don't know.””

“But she wanted to take Nova.””

I had no answer.

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Vanessa appeared in the garage doorway.

She had changed clothes. Her hair was brushed, and she was holding a glass of water.

She looked directly at the laptop.

“Have you finished watching those videos?””

I stood.

“Why did you let Daniel into my house?””

Vanessa took a sip of water.

“Because he's your friend.””

“That's not an answer.””

“He came to discuss something.””

“What?””

She set the glass on the workbench.

“Marcus, you're making a huge mistake. You're allowing a child to turn a disagreement into an accusation.””

Maya stood.

“I didn't make anything up.””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“Go upstairs.””

“No.””

Her mother blinked.

“What did you say?””

Maya's voice shook, but she didn't move.

“I said no.””

Vanessa placed both hands on her hips.

“You're being disrespectful.””

“You burned Nova.””

“I told you that project was becoming an obsession.””

“You stole my notebooks.””

“I borrowed them.””

“You gave my designs to Brielle.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Brielle needed help.””

Maya pointed at the laptop.

“Then why did you tell her to erase my name?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Are you really going to let her speak to me like this?””

I stepped between them.

“She can tell the truth in her own home.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Her own home? Marcus, do you hear yourself? This is our home.””

“Then why did you try to transfer an interest in the property?””

Her face changed.

For the first time, she looked genuinely shocked.

“Who told you that?””

“My attorney.””

Vanessa set her jaw.

“That was a routine inquiry.””

“About transferring ownership?””

“I was protecting my daughter.””

“From what?””

She looked at Maya.

Then she said something that made the room go quiet.

“From you.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“You're never here. You leave for weeks. You send money and think that makes you a father.

Maya needs stability, and Brielle needs opportunities. I was trying to make sure both girls had a future.””

“By stealing Maya's invention?””

“By giving Brielle a chance!””

Maya stepped forward.

“You didn't give her a chance. You gave her my work.””

Vanessa pointed at her.

“Enough!””

I raised my hand.

“Don't.””

For a moment, Vanessa seemed to realize that her usual tactics weren't working.

She lowered her voice.

“Marcus, can we talk privately?””

“No.””

“Please.””

“Everything you need to say can be said here.””

She glanced at Maya.

Then she leaned closer to me.

“You don't understand what Daniel has been doing.””

My heart skipped.

“What has Daniel been doing?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“He told me the company was in trouble.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“He said there were financial problems. He said you were going to lose everything.””

“Daniel told you that?””

“Yes.””

“And you believed him?””

“He said if I helped him, he could protect me and Brielle.””

I took a step closer.

“Help him with what?””

Vanessa looked toward the laptop.

Her lips trembled.

“Marcus, I didn't know he was going to burn the robot.””

Maya made a small sound.

I turned toward her.

She was staring at her mother as though she had never seen her before.

“Mom,” she whispered.

“You knew?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I was trying to protect us.””

“From what?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Daniel said the company was going to collapse. He said he needed access to some of your documents. He promised that if I helped him, Brielle and I would have somewhere to live.””

My stomach tightened.

“What documents?””

“I don't know.””

“You don't know?””

“He said they were financial records.””

I looked at the laptop.

The final recording was still open.

“Then explain this.””

I pressed play.

Daniel's voice filled the garage.

“Are you sure Marcus won't find out?””

Vanessa's recorded voice answered.

“He won't be home until Friday.””

Then Daniel said:

“Good. Once the paperwork is filed, the house won't matter anymore.””

The recording continued.

The second person stepped closer to the camera.

This time, the reflection was clear.

I recognized him immediately.

It was my accountant, Peter Collins.

The same man who had handled our company taxes for eleven years.

The same man who had prepared the financial documents Daniel used for our bank meetings.

And the same man who had signed off on our latest business valuation.

Maya looked from the screen to me.

“Dad, what's happening?””

I couldn't take my eyes off the image.

Then the recording captured Daniel's final sentence.

“By Monday, Marcus won't own the company, the house, or a single dollar of what he's built.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa's glass slipped from her hand and shattered against the concrete floor.

I turned toward her.

“Tell me everything.””

She began crying.

But before she could answer, my phone vibrated again.

An email notification appeared.

It was from our company's bank.

*URGENT: Authorization Required — Change of Primary Account Signatory.*

I opened the message.

The request had been submitted that afternoon.

The proposed new signatory was Daniel.

And beneath his name was a second authorization.

My signature.

Except I hadn't signed it.

I looked at Vanessa.

She covered her mouth.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel again.

This time, I answered.

“Marcus,” he said calmly, “I think we need to talk before you make things worse.””

I stared at the forged signature on my screen.

“Too late, Daniel.””

His voice dropped.

“Then you should know something.””

“What?””

May you like

He paused.

“Your daughter isn't the only person I had planned to take something from.””
