Chapter 14: The Last Betrayal

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Thomas Walker had been helping us since the beginning.

He had found the old evidence report.

He had identified Grace's statement.

He had told us about the suppressed investigation.

And now he was warning me that someone inside the police operation was working with Daniel.

“Who?”” I finally asked.

“I don't know the name yet.””

“Then how do you know?””

Thomas exhaled.

“Because I received a message from an officer who was supposed to be retired. Someone accessed the old case file using my credentials. That access came from inside the department.””

Robert took the phone.

“Officer Walker, this is Robert Hayes. Are you certain?””

“Certain enough to tell you not to share the location with anyone else.””

Robert looked at me.

“Where are you now?””

“Somewhere Daniel can't reach.””

“Can you meet us?””

“Not yet.””

Thomas paused.

Then he said something that made my stomach tighten.

“There's something I never told you about Elena's case.””

“What?””

“The night she was found, I was ordered to close the investigation. The order came from a senior officer named Martin Cole.””

Robert immediately wrote the name down.

“Is Cole still serving?””

“No. He retired three years ago.””

“Do you believe he was involved?””

“I believe he received money from a company connected to Peter Collins.””

I looked at Robert.

He mouthed the words: We need proof.

Thomas continued.

“I kept a copy of the original evidence log. There's a signature on it. The same signature appears on the authorization to remove Elena's vehicle.””

“Whose signature?””

“Martin Cole's.””

Robert asked for the document.

Thomas agreed to send it through a secure channel.

Then the call ended.

Robert immediately contacted the detective supervising the investigation.

He requested an independent team and warned them that the operation might be compromised.

But the clock was moving.

Midnight was approaching.

And Brielle was still in Daniel's hands.

Vanessa sat at the kitchen table, holding Brielle's photograph.

“I should have protected her,” she whispered.

Maya stood nearby.

“You can still help her.””

Vanessa looked up.

“How?””

“Tell the police everything Daniel ever told you. Every place he took you. Every document he showed you. Every person he mentioned.””

Vanessa nodded.

Then she began talking.

She remembered a storage facility near the industrial road.

A private office where Daniel kept old company records.

A man named Martin Cole who had attended meetings with Daniel and Peter.

And a small red key Daniel had once left in her handbag.

“I still have it,” she said.

She rushed upstairs.

A few minutes later, she returned with a small key attached to a plastic tag.

Robert examined it.

“Do you know what it opens?””

“No.””

He turned it over.

There was a stamped number.

The police traced it to a storage facility.

One of the units was registered to Northbridge Holdings.

The same company Daniel had used to claim ownership of the warehouse.

The investigators obtained emergency access through the appropriate legal process.

They found boxes of contracts, financial records, and old correspondence.

Among them was a folder labeled:

*ELENA REED — FINAL SETTLEMENT.*

Inside was a document showing a payment of $75,000 to Martin Cole.

The payment had been made two days after Elena's accident.

There was also a letter from Peter.

The matter is closed. Ensure the original report remains unchanged.

Robert read it twice.

“This gives us a direct link.””

He sent copies to the independent investigators.

Then Thomas called again.

This time, he was breathing hard.

“Marcus, listen carefully. Martin Cole isn't the person inside the operation.””

“Who is?””

“Peter.””

I stared.

“Peter Collins?””

“Yes. He has been using an old consulting arrangement to access the department's evidence systems. He's been feeding Daniel information about your movements.””

I looked at Robert.

“Where is Peter now?””

Thomas replied.

“I believe he's already on his way to the industrial road.””

The call ended.

Robert immediately changed the operation plan.

The tactical commander was informed that no one could approach the location until the compromised personnel had been removed.

But Daniel still expected me at midnight.

I looked at the clock.

11:18 p.m.

“We need another plan,” I said.

Robert nodded.

“We have one.””

He explained that the police would create a controlled approach using an unmarked vehicle.

I would remain at a secure location.

The original chip would stay with Aaron.

A decoy would be used to make Daniel believe I had complied.

The real evidence would be protected and copied to multiple investigators.

I agreed.

But Maya stepped forward.

“I can help.””

I shook my head.

“You've done enough.””

“Dad, I know how Daniel's device works. If he tries to connect the chip to his system, I can identify the signal.””

Robert considered it.

“She may be able to help Aaron analyze the transmission without leaving this house.””

I looked at Maya.

“Only from here.””

She nodded.

“Only from here.””

At 11:47, the operation began.

An unmarked vehicle approached the industrial road.

A second team moved through the service entrance.

The compromised officers had been removed from the operation.

Peter's name had been flagged.

Daniel's phone was being monitored under the emergency procedures available to investigators.

Then the first update arrived.

“Visual contact with suspect vehicle.””

A second message followed.

“Possible second vehicle approaching from the north.””

Robert listened.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?””

He listened again.

Then he looked at me.

“Daniel has moved Brielle.””

“Where?””

“Toward the old laboratory.””

I stood.

“Why?””

“He may have realized the road is surrounded.””

Maya looked at her laptop.

“Wait.””

She opened the recovered signal data.

“There are two transmissions.””

Aaron leaned over her shoulder.

“One from the original device. What's the second?””

Maya pointed.

“It's the same wireless handshake we found in Nova's recording.””

She zoomed in.

“Daniel is using the device he brought to our garage.””

Aaron compared the signal.

Then he looked up.

“The second transmitter is moving.””

Maya watched the map.

“It stopped.””

Robert contacted the tactical team.

They were given the location.

A few minutes later, a voice came through the radio.

“Target vehicle located. Suspect attempting to leave.””

Then another voice.

“Child visible in passenger seat.””

Vanessa began crying.

“That's Brielle.””

The officers moved in.

A vehicle accelerated.

There was a brief burst of radio noise.

Then silence.

I grabbed Robert's arm.

“What's happening?””

He held up one hand.

The radio crackled again.

“Suspect vehicle stopped. One suspect detained.””

“Which suspect?””

A pause.

“Peter Collins.””

I exhaled.

Then the officer continued.

“Second vehicle located near the old laboratory. Child not present.””

My heart dropped.

“Where is Brielle?””

Robert called the commander.

The answer came seconds later.

“She's inside the facility.””

I looked at the screen.

Maya's signal showed the transmitter moving again.

“Dad,” she whispered.

“What?””

“The signal is coming from below the building.””

Aaron leaned closer.

“There's a basement?””

Maya nodded.

“The original laboratory plans show an underground equipment room.””

Robert immediately relayed the information.

The tactical team entered the building.

Then a new message appeared.

*SUSPECT DANIEL HAYES LOCATED.*

I stood.

“Is Brielle with him?””

Robert listened.

His face tightened.

“No.””

A voice came through the radio.

“Daniel is alone. He has barricaded himself inside the equipment room.””

“Where's the child?”” Robert demanded.

The officer answered.

“We found signs she was recently held here. But she's gone.””

My phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A text message appeared.

*You wanted the truth, Marcus. Now come hear it from the person who buried it.*

A second message followed.

It contained a photograph of Brielle's hand.

Around her wrist was a hospital identification bracelet.

I stared at the screen.

“What is that?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

Her face changed.

“That's from the hospital where Brielle was born.””

I looked at her.

“Why would Daniel have that?””

She took the phone with trembling hands.

Then she noticed something written on the back of the bracelet.

A name.

*ELENA REED.*

I stared.

“That doesn't make sense.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. It does.””

She looked at me.

“Daniel told me once that Brielle's birth records had been changed. He said it was because Grace had made a mistake with the paperwork.””

I felt the room tilt.

“Vanessa, what are you saying?””

She looked at the photograph again.

Then she whispered:

“I think Daniel has been lying about Brielle's birth since the beginning.””

Maya turned toward her.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“It means we may not know who Brielle's father really is.””

Before anyone could answer, the police radio crackled.

Daniel had surrendered.

But the officers had found something in the underground room.

A locked cabinet.

Inside it was a folder containing birth records, hospital reports, and an envelope addressed to Marcus Reed.

Robert opened the envelope over a secure video call.

May you like

The first line was written in Elena's handwriting.

Marcus, there is one more truth I need you to know.
